Snippet Saturday – Sweethearts – Her Demonic Angel (Her Angel romance series book 5)

It’s time for Snippet Saturday! Each week has a theme or is author’s choice. This week the theme is Sweethearts.

When thinking about sweethearts, I considered many angles, not just the typical high school romance one. I don’t write those sorts of stories after all. For some reason, I think of Veiron and Erin whenever I think of sweethearts. Those two were made for each other. So today, my snippet comes from the fifth book in my Her Angel romance series, Her Demonic Angel.

Veiron nodded and walked up the beach with Marcus, heading for the complex. Warm lights lit the path to the brilliant blue pool and the bar next to it. Erin sat on one of the stools lining the oblong thatched building with Amelia next to her, nursing a brightly coloured drink and wearing very little. The sight of Erin in nothing but a black bikini top and a pair of black shorts heated his blood but it was the way the men coming and going between the bar and the tables on the patio were ogling her that sent his temperature soaring. If it hadn’t been for Marcus walking beside him, his eyes glued to him, watching him, Veiron might have completely lost his head.

As it was, he had to fight hard to quell his raging desire to slaughter them all for looking at Erin with lust in their eyes.

Impulse control. He really had to work on it because with things so fragile between him and Erin, one wrong move would destroy everything they had built with each other. He didn’t think she would like it if he flipped out, unleashed his darker side, and savaged every mortal male who had dared to glance her way in the past few minutes, let alone the fact that he would alert the Devil to her location and likely bring some unwanted visitors to the island.

Veiron settled for glaring at them all whenever they looked at him, pinning them with dark looks that conveyed every bone-crushing and bloody thought filling his mind.

He slid onto the padded stool next to Erin at the bar. Amelia looked across her at him and then over her shoulder. Marcus played his part and lured her away, leaving him alone with Erin.

Erin continued to suck on the straw in her cocktail, her amber eyes fixed on the bar and head lowered enough that the short lengths of her black hair fell forwards and concealed part of her face.

Veiron wasn’t sure where to start. Speaking to her had sounded like a good thing and he had hoped to be calm and rational about everything but the sight of so many men looking at her had him riled and snappish. Not the best of moods for a heart to heart.

“Be careful when you go back,” she said without looking at him. “I don’t like the thought of you going down there, not after what I saw, but I won’t try to stop you.”

“I can take care of myself. I have done for centuries.” Veiron shrugged and leaned one elbow on the bar and swivelled to face her.

She didn’t move to face him. Her gaze stayed glued to her drink and she prodded at the ice and chunks of pineapple with her black straw. Not quite the response he should have given her. He should have told her that he would take care and that he was going there for her sake as much as he was for his. She needed answers and he would get them for her. She might have liked to hear that. Maybe he could have hooked her hair behind her ear and touched her cheek too. It would’ve been better than sounding like a heartless bastard.

“I don’t care,” she whispered and then sighed. “I just want to hear you promise you’ll be careful.”

Veiron shrugged. “I’m a demon. We’re not big on promises.”

Erin sighed again, her bare shoulders lifting with it. He wanted to kiss that milky patch of skin, desired to worship it and ease her pain. If he did, she would know that he felt something for her and that leaving her was the last thing he wanted to do, but he wasn’t sure what he was doing or how he was feeling or what were the right reactions to it all.

“I had that one coming.” She lifted her head and looked across at him, her eyes full of hurt that he had heard in her soft voice. “I forgot where you were from and I shouldn’t have said all those things about your home. I wasn’t thinking. It’s just… you’re nothing like the ones who held me captive and I don’t think of you as one of them, so I didn’t think that what I said was going to hurt you… but I should have… and I’m sorry I said it.”

Veiron stared at her in silence. She swallowed and her gaze slowly fell to her drink again, and she started poking it with her straw.

“Don’t worry about it.” He brushed the hair from her face, tucking it behind her ear and savouring how soft her skin was beneath his fingers. Skin he wanted to kiss every inch of so she would know that she was precious to him and he couldn’t get enough of her. “You’ve been through a lot and you’re entitled to your opinion. I don’t hold it against you.”

Much.

He shouldn’t hold it against her at all but he couldn’t shake the voice that kept telling him that whenever she cursed Hell and his kind, she cursed him too.

“But I hurt you.”

Veiron didn’t acknowledge that. She already looked miserable enough without him adding to it by confirming that she had wounded him with her thoughtless words.

He flagged the bartender instead. “Double whiskey.”

The man poured it for him and slid it across the bar, all without his gaze straying to Erin. Wise man. Never a wiser one in existence. A fight, even one using mortal strength, would make Veiron feel a whole lot better right about now and he would be quick to take anyone up on the offer they made by looking at Erin.

Wouldn’t that just impress the beautiful woman beside him?

He would probably seal his fate if he lashed out at any of the mortal males in the vicinity, even if he did withhold most of his strength. Erin would think him a monster.

“I thought you wouldn’t be able to drink,” she said, oblivious to the dark thoughts that were probably showing in his eyes, ringing them with crimson.

Veiron laughed. “I refer you back to my earlier comment. I’m a demon.”

“A demonic angel.”

Veiron swirled the whiskey around his glass, staring at the amber liquid. “Something like that… I think the popular term is Hell’s angel… most just call me a demon.”

Erin flinched. “I’m sorry.”

“About what?” He looked across at her. Something told him she wasn’t apologising for her outburst on the boat now.

“About letting Amelia keep me occupied all day when all I really wanted to do was take you back to our villa and get wild with you.” She smiled but it was short lived. “She kept telling me things and I think they were meant to drive a wedge between us but they only made me want to see you and be with you even more.”

Veiron smiled now. That sounded like his Erin, the rebellious woman who probably liked him more because of the bad things he had done. He kept trying to be a good man for her, to prove he had a good heart and was what she needed, and it turned out she wanted the bad boy instead.

“What did she tell you?” He sipped his whiskey and enjoyed the burn as he swallowed.

“She told me about what happened to you all and then Marcus told me more… about what Heaven and Hell did to you… and I understand why you want to get your own back.” She took another long suck on her straw, draining the last of her cocktail. “I’m worried about you, Veiron, and I know you’ll just tell me not to in that gruff way of yours and that you can take care of yourself, but that isn’t going to stop me from worrying when you go to Hell… I need to know that you’ll be safe because I… I care about you… a lot.”

Veiron’s eyes widened. Was she saying what he thought she was? He stared into her eyes, trying to see it in them, but she lowered them to her bare knees.

He smiled even though she wouldn’t see it. She didn’t need to feel awkward about what she had said, but if it made her feel better, he could confess his feelings in a roundabout manner too. “You know, I thought you hadn’t been wearing much when I first met you but this little number… fuck, do I want you when you look so sexy… and I want to kill every man who is looking at you… because you’re mine, Erin.”

She blushed and bit her lower lip, a beautiful touch of shyness that tugged at his protective side before she lifted her eyes and met his, sending a hot jolt through him that rocked him to his core. Damn, he wanted her right here and right now, regardless of the audience.

Erin reached across, all hint of shyness gone as her pupils ate up her irises, swamping her eyes with desire and passion that he had tasted firsthand and wanted to taste again, craved like a drug. She laid her palm on his bare chest and his heart beat wildly, blood rushing through his veins. Her caress was fire and what she said knocked the air from his lungs and made him want to wrap her in his embrace and fly away with her.

“You’re mine, too, Veiron,” she husked and dropped her gaze to his lips before dragging it back up to his, sending another white-hot bolt of hunger through him. “And I’m never letting you go.”

Veiron growled, wrapped his arm around her back and dragged her off her stool and into him. He claimed her mouth, crushing her lips with his and kissing her with all the force of his desire and need for her. She moaned, her hands pressing against his bare chest, searing him down to his soul.

Mine. She belonged to him now, hadn’t denied him and had claimed him as hers too, and had vowed to keep him.

He wanted to be hers.

Needed it.

He would give all of himself to her and take all of her in return, and nothing would stand between them.

Not even the Devil himself.

More about the book:

Her Demonic Angel

Felicity Heaton

A demonic angel with a heart of ice, Veiron walks a dark path with vengeance on his mind. Nothing will sway him from his mission to destroy his master… until he risks his life to enter Hell once more to save a mortal female. The fiery beauty makes him burn with hungers he must battle and needs he cannot deny, tempting him to surrender body and soul to her.

Erin is convinced her refusal to do the Devil’s bidding will see her die in a terrifying realm straight out of her nightmares. The last thing she expects is the lethally sensual warrior who breaks into her cell and awakens the darkest desires of her heart and a fierce longing to know the heat of his caress.

Pulled into an incredible world where war is set to ignite and darkness is on the rise, Erin races with Veiron to escape the Devil’s legions in a journey fraught with danger and filled with passion that flares white-hot.

When Erin is faced with a life-shattering realisation and an extraordinary destiny, will their love give them the strength to battle both Heaven and Hell or will they be parted forever?

Future Paranormal Romance Book Releases News

This is a new feature for my blog. I get emails, Facebook comments and Tweets asking me about whether or not certain series will get another book, when I’ll be releasing a certain  book, and other questions related to future releases, so I wanted to try to answer all those questions on my blog before they ever come up. My blog is always the place to go to if you want to know what I’m working on, as I blog regularly about my writing and my future releases here.

The questions I’m getting asked the most right now are variations on the theme of…

Is there going to be another book in the Her Angel series because Her Demonic Angel rocked my world!

The answer to this question is yes, I will be writing more books in the Her Angel romance series. I have been asked this question so much in the months after Her Demonic Angel‘s release that I actually asked a few of the readers if they felt the series had come to a natural conclusion. I hadn’t noticed that it felt that way, but several readers assured me that it felt as if this was the end of the series. No, it isn’t. There will be more books.

I’m committing to writing one for definite, possibly two, and maybe more. The definite is Asmodeus’s book, which will hopefully be out around the same time of year as Her Demonic Angel was, in September this year. I can’t commit to a firm date. It all depends on my ever-shifting schedule. I’m still in the planning stages for Asmodeus’s book. There’s no title for the book yet. The plot is bare bones in my head and in a word document, but I’ll be able to work on it soon, and it will blossom into one hell of a wild adventure for our angels.

I had a few people ask if Nevar would be the next hero. No, he won’t, because right now he’s going through some changes and they will lead to his book. You can read his journey in monthly episodes in my newsletter.

Is Snow ever going to get a book and will it be out tomorrow?!?

I know people are desperate for Snow to get his happily forever after in the Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series, and I can assure you that it is happening. You might have seen the posts here from when I was writing the first draft in January, or perhaps you’ve seen the quotes I post on my Facebook fan page from the book.

Snow’s book is Unleash. You can read about my work on it by clicking that link. It will take you to all the posts related to the book on my blog, with the newest first.

I have no set date for the release of Unleash. I hoped to have it out in late spring 2013 before I decided to write a complete first draft of the first Eternal Mates series book rather than just a third of it for a proposal for my agent. I still intend to have it out before summer. At the moment, I’m thinking it will come out some time in May. I am working my backside off on getting the book in your hands, I swear it. It’s the longest book in the series, close to 100,000 words. It took me a few weeks to write it, and I have to edit it, polish it, and get it proofed before it’s ready to hit virtual shelves. Considering I only finished writing it in January, a May release is a very quick turnaround for a book this length.

Will there be more books in the Vampires Realm series?

Yes, there will be. I had wanted to get another released this year. I’m not sure if it’s a possibility. My schedule became very messed up when I decided to write the first Guardians of Hades novel last year, intending to use it for the series proposal for my agent. I had a change of heart about that but it didn’t mean I got those weeks back. I really want to get the next two Vampires Realm books out as soon as I can, and I’ll try to make one happen this year. I think it’s possible.

The next book in the series will be Hunger, which is Tor and Eve’s book. Eve is Lilith’s sister (the heroine of Seventh Circle). Eve is mentioned in that book, and also in Masquerade. Tor is also mentioned in Masquerade, and was featured in a flash fiction here on my blog last year.

Other questions I get asked are about the Vampire Venators series and the Shadow & Light Trilogy.

Do I intend to write more for these two series, despite the fact that I currently don’t have any books listed against them? Yes, I do. I switched Forbidden Blood and Ascension away from being listed as the first books in the Vampire Venators and Shadow & Light Trilogy because they failed to generate a lot of interest, and because I had far too many commitments and had to decide which series to pursue at the time. I’m only one woman, and unfortunately that means I can’t keep up with all these different series. I had to focus on a selected few, and Vampires Realm, Her Angel, and Vampire Erotic Theatre won the toss because sales were far stronger for those series. It pained me to put aside these two series, but it was a business decision and it was necessary.

Do I know when I will be releasing more books in these two series? No, I don’t. I desperately want to write them though. There are two more books planned in the Vampire Venators series, possibly three to complete the series. I have two novels and a novella to write for the Shadow & Light Trilogy. I hope I can have better news about these two series when I write another future releases post.

If you have any questions that you would love me to answer, drop me an email at author@felicityheaton.co.uk or leave a comment. I’ll be sure to answer any questions, and might post about them in my next future book news post too.

The releases I plan to happen this year are Unleash, the next Her Angel novel, and either the next Vampires Realm novel plus the first Guardians of Hades book, or just the next Vampires Realm novel.

I hope this post has been informative and that I’ve answered some of your questions.

Don’t forget to leave a question or email me if you have one!

WIP Wednesday – Eternal Mates Paranormal Romance Series with Sneak Peek

I hope you enjoyed my post last week about my new paranormal romance series, Eternal Mates, and the sneak peek at the hero and heroine. I have a new sneak peek for you this week, from a point further along from last week’s scene.

I’ve been busy writing the book all week, trying to get through my other work as quickly as possible to fit in as much writing time as I can. I’m really on a roll with this one and don’t want to slow down, although I did have an off day on Tuesday. It just wasn’t happening and my writing output dropped to a whopping 1000 words. It was hard to get going this morning too, but I got there in the end and powered through a love scene and then another chapter.

The book is up to 74000 words now though, and I think I have around another 20000 to go, so it will probably be coming in just over the mark at maybe 95000 words in total, give or take.

It’s been an exciting week though. I’ve introduced a new character. It’s a species I had wanted to bring into the series during one of the first three books and I had an opportunity to bring this male in when a scene I had planned out decided it wanted to run a little differently. Now I need to write up his character profile sheet while I know him. I think you’ll all like him. Picture cocky self-assured bachelor jaguar shifter club owner who believes that bonds are like collars, and best avoided.

I’m also at a point where I will introduce another character, this one a planned appearance, and I’ll mention a second character. She doesn’t make a physical appearance in this book, but she is in the second and the third books.

Now that you’re up to speed on the book and the progress I’ve made, I’ll share another peek at it…

This sort of follows on from last week. Olivia is a doctor/scientist and has just been bitten by the hero, Loren, whom she had on her inspection table after hunters brought him in rather worse for wear.

Again, all first draft, so forgive any errors!

Sneak Peek – Eternal Mates Book One

Olivia managed to find the strength to look up into his eyes.

They were different again, amethyst and dazzling. He wobbled and shimmered, said something she didn’t hear over the whoosh of blood in her ears. Ears. His were pointed now, more so than they had been before. All his markings were shining too, colourful and beautiful.

Olivia got her right hand free and absently raised it, the action seeming to take forever. She touched his bloodied lips and they parted to reveal his fangs. Her blood. He had stolen her blood. Her head turned and twirled, the white room spinning with it. He spoke again, his beautiful mouth moving against her fingertip. She stared dazedly at it, captivated, lost, feeling not quite herself in the presence of this man.

He continued to hold her, cradling her against his body, keeping her on her feet, and stared down into her eyes. His shimmered with something she couldn’t decipher through the haze in her mind. The fog refused to lift and part, even now that her strength was slowly beginning to return.

Olivia grazed the point of one of his fangs with her fingertip. He remained very still, and she had the strangest feeling that he was letting her see him like this.

“You’re not… like any vampire… I’ve seen.” Her words swam in her head, disjointed. Was she making sense to him?

His lips quirked.

“Not a vampire,” he whispered and drew her closer, and her gaze lingered on his mouth. Decadent. Profane. A mouth made for kissing. She wanted to kiss him.

Did you enjoy the sneak peek this week?

Teaseday – Excerpt from Heart of Darkness – Vampire Romance Book

Today’s tease comes from the book Heart of Darkness, which is a stand alone vampire romance novel, and a book that features one of my favourite heroes, the vampire prince Aleksandr.

Elise cursed the name of Aleksandr Nemov for the hundredth time that night, and it was barely two hours after sundown. It transpired that he had only danced with her at the ball. Now everywhere she went the ladies of the house whispered and glared at her. Even the guards were merciless in their teasing. She had gone to see Andrej to find some comfort but he had been so caustic that she had immediately left.

She hurried across the landscaped garden to the grey two storey square building at the back of the estate that acted as the garrison. It was past time to report in for duty. Hopefully, Commander Piotr would forgive her this small fault in exchange for the fact that she had followed his orders and ruined her life by dancing with Aleksandr Nemov.

Elise strode through the building, her focus so fixed on thinking of a way to gain a solo mission so she could patrol the city in glorious solitude and keeping her head down to avoid the snide taunts of her comrades that she didn’t notice the danger until it was too late.

The moment she saw Aleksandr, she turned and tried to escape her commander’s office.

“Elise,” Commander Piotr said and she froze, cursing Aleksandr again.

“Reporting for duty, Sir.” Elise saluted her commander and then Ladislav where he sat perched on the end of her commander’s oak desk dressed in a long black winter coat and pinstripe suit. She ignored Aleksandr.

“You are to show me the city tonight.”

Her gaze shot to Aleksandr. He smiled at her, all charm and sweetness.

She didn’t want to show him the city. He already knew it. He had been to Prague before.

Had he asked for her to be his guide tonight? She shrugged that question away. There was no reason for him to ask for her specifically. Then again, he’d had no reason to be so intent on dancing with her either. The look in his grey eyes unsettled her. Whenever he looked at her, he looked like a raptor eyeing its prey. She didn’t like it, and she hadn’t seen him look at anyone else that way.

Elise bit her tongue to hold in the refusal that tried to spring from her lips and saluted her commander again, stiffly this time and with anger burning in her gut.

She turned on the spot, took a deep breath, and led the way out of the garrison. A quick tour of the city wouldn’t kill her. It was an honour to serve their prince and she was sure that she was imagining everything about Aleksandr. He didn’t know any of the guards besides her and the commander, and he had met her in the city. Perhaps he merely thought her a suitable guide, one who would be able to give him information he needed.

Perhaps he was out to seduce her.

Elise would have laughed at that had she not feared it so much.

Aleksandr was quiet as they walked into the heart of the city. His eyes constantly scanned over the old buildings lining the narrow roads. She brought him to the Old Town quarter first, entering the main square from an alley at the bridge end, away from the open square itself.

“It’s a terrible place for hunting,” Elise said to break the silence.

Aleksandr glanced at her and then looked at their surroundings. He tensed and turned the second the astronomical clock mounted near the base of the tall stone tower in front of them began to chime the hour. With a frown, he walked forwards, towards the beautiful gold and blue dial that the tourists loved, studying it and the gold and painted circular calendar below. Elise went with him, her gaze seeking the model of death chiming a bell. She loved the clock too. Sometimes when she was here scouting for a suitable source of blood she became distracted by the way the models on the clock came alive on the hour.

The cobbled area in front of the clock was empty save for her and Aleksandr. The city was so cold in winter that few tourists came. Those who did rarely ventured out at night to watch the clock.

“It’s a good place for scouting for blood.” She hoped for a response this time. “We often come here and then follow a selected tourist to see if they venture somewhere quiet we can deal with them.”

“It seems like a very inefficient way to hunt.” His eyes didn’t leave the clock. “Why not simply lure them away? Or wait for someone to pass a quiet street and kill them?”

“It is not our way. Taking the occasional tourist is less conspicuous than killing the people of Prague. That way we risk the humans learning of our existence. We do as the Nemov line wishes, to protect our species from discovery.” She paused to reflect on his questions. “Luring someone could be considered taking pleasure from the hunt.”

His broad shoulders shifted in a shrug. “Some could say that.”

Elise wanted to ask him if he lured his victims or took any pleasure from what he did when hunting, but the sight of him caught her off guard. The light from the astronomical clock bathed his skin, warming it and making his steely eyes darker. He had a regal profile that matched his classically handsome face. The strong line of his jaw led her gaze down to his throat and the slow steady pulse that ticked there. She dropped it lower, to his waist, hidden behind his long black coat. She had been shocked when he had revealed his bloodline’s mark, and not only because she had discovered that he was royalty. He had shown no reserve about flashing his body and there had been a pleased look in his eyes when he had caught her staring. Just as she was now. She forced her eyes back up to his face. His bowed lips tugged into a smile.

“I like your city.” He turned on the spot, scanning the cluster of buildings at this end of the square, and then stopped and faced her, his smile widening. “It has many beauties.”

Elise’s cheeks heated at the suggestion in his voice. She walked past him towards the square, ignoring his charm. He caught up with her, walking close beside her, and touched her elbow to make her walk in another direction. He had done that several times now, each one feeling like an intimate caress rather than a mere suggestion of an order.

She moved a step away from him and walked past the tower and into the heart of the expansive square, heading for the tall row of coloured buildings opposite. Cafés and restaurants lined the square, spilling out from the arched walkway beneath the buildings in front and to her right. Behind the buildings in front of her, one of Prague’s most impressive sights rose. The twin spiked towers of the church and warmly lit façade captivated tourists even more than the clock. There were a few gathered in the square, their camera flashes puncturing the darkness.

“This is another good place to scout for tourists in summer,” she said and Aleksandr looked towards them. “In winter it is too conspicuous, but in summer there are often a large number of people here. It is easy to blend amongst them.”

Elise led Aleksandr towards the line of restaurants. The tables set out beneath the large white square umbrellas and heat lamps were mostly unoccupied.

“Another good place to scout?” His gaze scanned the people.

“Sometimes we come here in winter late at night, when the bars are turning out.”

He moved closer to her again and his voice dropped to a whisper. “You are far more talkative when you are not dancing.”

Elise looked away from him, towards the other side of the square and the restaurants there. She was thankful when Aleksandr’s attention left her and returned to the square. She needed space to breathe for a moment. She wasn’t used to so much attention, especially not from men, and she was starting to feel suffocated.

She glanced at Aleksandr. His focus was on the people, studying them closely. He seemed like a different person, colder and calculating, as she had expected him to be from the tales that she had heard and read in their society’s papers.

“The vampire hunters don’t come here.” She looked around the square. “At least not often anyway. They know how we work. They know we won’t kill the humans openly, and that we will follow them away from here. Most hunters gather over the river to wait for us.”

Aleksandr’s gaze returned to her along with his focus. She could feel his eyes on her, burning into the side of her face. She kept her gaze away from his, not wanting to see how he was looking at her now. He touched her elbow again, his fingers lingering longer this time, almost a caress.

“Show me where the hunters are.” His voice was low still, a soothing sound that felt like a physical touch over her body.

She nodded and led the way, quickening her pace to gain a little distance from him. Alarm bells were ringing loudly in the back of her mind. Aleksandr was too attentive, too charming, and too close to her. All of it made her feel as though he wanted something and she knew what that something was.

It wasn’t going to happen.

To keep him distracted from her, she talked to him about the city. She gave him all the information he might need about how the police operated, her family’s methods of disposing of bodies, how they acted as a military academy to avoid rousing suspicion when they were in the city, and the small number of hunters that passed through each month, heading deeper into Europe from Asia or vice versa. With each piece of information, Aleksandr moved closer, until their hands brushed occasionally, sending shivers dancing up her arm. She tried to distance herself again but whenever she moved away, he moved closer. It felt too intimate.

She passed under the arch beneath the dark stone tower that stood at one end of the Charles Bridge and out the other side, stopping a short way onto it. The tall antique lamps that lined the wide pedestrian bridge glowed softly, lighting the stone statues standing on the walls of it in warm sepia hues. The brightly lit gothic cathedral on the hill across the wide black river, and the buildings that clustered around it, cast twinkling lights on the rippling water. It was beautiful, and she hoped it would keep Aleksandr’s attention off her.

Aleksandr moved away from her at last, going to lean on the wall and peer over the edge at the river. He looked along the bridge in the direction of the other gate tower. A couple were walking towards them.

He glanced over his shoulder at her, his eyes almost black in the low light, and then looked back at the couple. She hoped he wasn’t considering killing them. Her family still had enough blood in storage to last them a week and another murder in the city so close to the death of the hunter would rouse too much suspicion amongst the local police.

Aleksandr turned slowly as the couple passed, his eyes tracking them, and relief eased her tension away when they passed her and walked through the gate tower behind her.

He leaned back against the wall at an angle, propping himself up on his elbows. His long black coat fell back to reveal his body and the dagger sheathed at his hip. The black trousers and shirt did nothing to hide the toned planes of his physique. Elise tore her gaze away and looked left, up the dark river towards the fountain and the small park where they had first met.

Since then, her entire world had been falling apart. Aleksandr had shaken it to its foundations and she was still spinning, unable to get her head straight.

Aleksandr came over to her, close again, near enough that his breath caressed her face. It felt as though he didn’t want to let her get her head straight, as though he wanted to confuse her and send her mind and heart in circles.

“The hunters favour the other side of the bridge, where the streets are narrow and quieter. It is easier for them to fight us unhindered there. It is also our favoured hunting ground.” Elise cast her gaze down when Aleksandr’s arm grazed hers.

When she eventually looked at him, he was staring at the cathedral but his focus wasn’t there. It was on her. He leaned down, bringing his mouth so close to her ear that his lips brushed it as he spoke.

“Can we see there?” he whispered and she stared wide-eyed at the cathedral across the broad glittering black river. “I would like to take you there.”

Elise sidestepped and cleared her throat, flustered by the connotation in his words. “It’s best we don’t. There have been many hunters entering the city recently.”

His dark eyebrows rose. “I can handle them.”

The smile he gave her was stunning. She looked away and fought for composure. Anger coiled in her stomach, turning her blood to flame. She had been right. He didn’t want a tour guide, just as he hadn’t merely wanted a dance partner last night. That was why he had looked so disappointed.

“Come, Elise, show me the other side and the narrow dark streets.” He held his hand out to her.

Her eyes jumped to the gate tower at the other end of the bridge near the area he spoke of and then to his, and she tried to look away again but failed. The look in them left her in no doubt of his intentions. He moved closer, his broad frame imposing, and dipped down, lowering his mouth to her ear.

“You will take me there.”

Elise stared at his ear, the tufts of his dark hair behind it, and the tall, sloped flat-topped dark grey roof of the tower beyond. She couldn’t breathe. His proximity, his persistence, his attention, it all smothered her. She couldn’t take it. She didn’t want it.

“You are a poor dancer, but a skilled fighter,” he murmured against her cheek, his breath teasing her skin and her throat. Another shiver cascaded through her, tumbling down her spine and urging her to close her eyes. She refused. He pressed his body against hers, his hands claiming her upper arms. “Your strength, your skill in the fight last night, it was astounding and graceful, almost as enthralling as your beauty.”

Elise broke free of him and backed away. “Leave me alone.”

Aleksandr laughed softly. “No, I cannot do that. Not yet.”

She glared at him, seeing in his eyes that he intended to pursue her. She wanted to tell him again to leave her alone but couldn’t find her voice or the conviction to refuse his advances.

Elise shook her head and ran away instead, storming through the arch back into the city, intent on returning to the mansion and finding solitude there, away from the madness of Aleksandr.

She didn’t understand why he wanted her.

Or why the thought of becoming nothing more than a conquest to him hurt her.

Elise stared wide-eyed at the pavement. Dismay swept through her.

No.

Her heart said it was true.

She wanted him too.

It wasn’t possible though. He would be gone soon, moved on to another city and likely another woman. If she gave in to her desire, he would take her heart with him. She couldn’t bear the thought of it so she shut her mind and her heart to it. She wouldn’t fall for Aleksandr.

He would grow tired of the chase soon enough.

Elise steeled herself against the hurt that thought caused and cursed the name of Aleksandr Nemov.

She wouldn’t give in to him.

She wouldn’t.

Her heart whispered to her.

She would.

It was only a matter of time.

Vampires for Valentine's Giveaway Hop

The Vampires for Valentine’s Giveaway Hop is run by paranormal romance authors Felicity Heaton, Caris Roane and H. D. Thomson! This hop celebrates the fanged heroes and heroines, the alluring creatures of the night, yes, those vampires we all love so much. All of the giveaways in this hop have a vampire theme to them, so we are truly celebrating vampires for Valentine’s Day!

The giveaway runs until 12:01am on 19th February, and is international.

I wanted to share a snippet from my latest vampire romance book with this one, so here’s a hot peek at Bewitch!

Payne nodded too and held his hand out to her. He meant to teleport her. Well, it certainly beat walking but he had snarled and growled at her earlier when she had touched him. Was he that concerned about those males finding her that he was willing to break his no touching rule to get her up to the woods unseen? It was a start.

Elissa slipped her hand into his. Heat chased up her arm as his fingers closed around it. She gasped and stared up into his eyes. The flecks of blue and gold in them brightened, glowing in the low light from the fire and the candles. A louder gasp left her when he pulled her hard against him, wrapped his arms around her, and darkness swallowed the world.

They reappeared in the middle of the grounds of the mansion, the manicured lawn stretching around them and glittering with dew. Elissa shivered, the cold air instantly chilling every inch of exposed skin. She should have put a jacket on before letting him teleport her. She tipped her head back and stared up at the crisp moonless sky above her. Bright stars twinkled and winked at her. She drew in a deep breath and sighed it out, the sight of the universe on display above her relaxing her.

Witches always felt an affinity to nature and whenever she was out in the open, surrounded by greenery, she felt as though she had come home.

Payne moved against her, his arms still around her waist, his cool breath caressing her face. She lowered her eyes and froze as they found his were on her throat. The light from the mansion behind her was weak but enough for her to see where he was looking and that he was thinking very naughty things. She could see his fangs between his sensual lips.

Elissa swallowed her nerves and the action caused him to frown and hold her closer. It seemed he could deny his incubus urges but his vampire ones were more difficult to control. It was definitely his stronger side and that was a problem. She needed his incubus side at the fore, and the only way she could think of bringing it out in him was pleasure. She needed him to give in to his desires. He stared at her throat and the longer he gazed upon it, the faster her breaths came, until she was panting with anticipation in his strong arms.

“Payne?” she whispered, breaking his reverie. His eyes slid to her and the look in them would have knocked her on her backside if he hadn’t been holding her so tightly.

A man had never looked at her with such intense desire and need before.

She risked it.

She wriggled her arm free from between them and raised it to his face. The moment she made contact, her palm cupping his left cheek, he sucked in a sharp breath, closed his eyes and leaned into her touch.

He growled. Not in warning this time. It carried unadulterated hunger.

He clutched her closer and her eyes widened, skin flushing with prickly heat. Oh, mother earth. His hardness pressed into her belly and all manner of wanton naughty thoughts cascaded through her mind.

Gods, kiss her.

She needed to be kissed.

Masquerade

F E Heaton

Ten years have passed since Sophis and Vivek, two vampires of the Venia bloodline, came close to death at the hands of twin hunters Aleksis and Izabella Romanov. The events of that night turned Sophis and Vivek against each other, shattering their close friendship and driving them apart.

Now, on the eve of a centenary Creator Day masquerade and at a time when things between them are dangerously close to separating them forever, they uncover a small army of vampire hunters in Saint Petersburg, led by their nemeses, Aleksis and Izabella.

With the safety of the rulers of the seven pure vampire bloodlines in their hands and their chance for vengeance hanging in the balance, can Sophis and Vivek face their past and overcome their differences? Will they realise their true feelings for each other before it’s too late or will the hunters finally claim their lives as their deadly plot to destroy the bloodlines unfolds?

Seduce

Felicity Heaton

Bloodlust runs in his veins, a dark master waiting for the day it will reign over him. Now a woman with a pure soul and wicked intentions has him in her sights and is determined to crack the ice around his heart, and she might save or damn him.

Antoine stands apart from the world around him, a dangerous and broken soul who must maintain rigid control at all times or risk his dark addiction finally seizing hold of him. The shadows of his past haunt him and he sees his bleak future each night when his brother wakes screaming, his blood addiction turning him savage. He cannot allow himself to feel, but when Sera walks into Vampirerotique, the erotic theatre he runs with three other vampires, to audition, she awakens dangerous desires in him—hungers that could spell the end of both of them.

Sera has wanted Antoine since the night she first saw the gorgeous aristocrat vampire. She can’t ignore the deep carnal hunger he stirs in her or the ache to know the heat of his touch. With the help of her sire, an ex-performer at Vampirerotique, she sets in motion a game of seduction, one designed to thaw the ice in Antoine’s veins and make him burn for her.

When Sera discovers the shocking truth about his past and the darkness that lurks within him, will she be strong enough to seize his heart with both hands and win him forever or will she lose him to the ghosts that still haunt him?

Sensual Sunday – Sexy new excerpt from Bewitch (Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series book 5)

Sensual Sunday is brought to you today by Bewitch, which is the fifth book in my popular Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series. Bewitch is now available on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBookstore, Kobo Books, and other retailers.

Sensual Sunday always features a hot excerpt from one of my paranormal romance books and for the next few weeks it will focus solely on Bewitch. Read on for this Sunday’s sensual snippet…

Elissa ran her gaze over Payne, starting at his black boots and dark blue jeans, and then drifting upwards to his hands. Strong hands. Long fingers. Made for squeezing, palming, stroking and caressing. She blushed and averted her gaze. It lingered on his bare right forearm and the scars that littered his skin. He must have badly injured himself at some point in his life or perhaps his not quite one hundred percent vampire genes meant that he didn’t possess the same level of healing that pure vampires had.

Her eyes roamed up his torso. His dark grey shirt fitted snugly to his lithe body, revealing just enough about his physique to arouse her curiosity. The top few buttons were undone, giving a hint of muscled chest and sexy collarbones. No bite marks on his throat. Not into that sort of thing? Maybe he didn’t take vampire lovers.

She reached his face and slowed her visual exploration of the six-feet-plus of sex god in front of her. Every feature was sinful, from his profanely sensual lips, with slightly fuller bottom one, to the strong cut of his jaw, to his straight nose and fine eyebrows that flared above his striking grey eyes. They shifted back to her and her breath hitched in her chest. The dark edge to his eyes sent a thrill through her. Mother earth, he was gorgeous.

Forbidden.

She knew the rules. Incubi were demons. Demons were a big no-no for a witch.

She wouldn’t break the rules with him. Cross her heart. She just wanted to peel away the layers of this enigmatic male and learn about him. All witches were naturally curious, but Elissa was honest enough with herself to admit that what she felt for Payne went beyond natural.

It was dangerous.

Snippet Saturday – Action – Love Immortal (vampire romance novel)

It’s time for Snippet Saturday! Each week has a theme or is author’s choice. This week the theme is Action.

When I think of action, one of the scenes that always leaps out at me is the opening sequence of Love Immortal, my epic, emotionally intense, and action-packed vampire romance novel.

It’s another long one this week…

Monsters existed.

Lauren had always suspected it to be true, and now she had all the evidence she needed.

One was standing twenty feet in front of her.

It towered over her, yellow eyes glowing in the dim alley between the old redbrick houses of her neighbourhood. Tufted black wiry fur covered it from tail to pointed ears, from the long claws on its colossal paw-like hands to the thick trunks of its hind legs. Her fevered mind said that it was only an escaped wolf from London Zoo, but Lauren couldn’t bring herself to believe it. She’d seen the wolves once. This creature was nothing like them. This was something else.

Its mouth opened to reveal jagged teeth, each the size of her thumb.

Why Grandma, what big teeth you have.

All the better to eat you with.

Icy fingers clutched her heart and Lauren trembled, cold sweat trickling down her back beneath the skinny-fit brown t-shirt. The mad rush of her pulse made her dizzy and unexpended adrenaline stole her strength. Whoever had said that adrenaline made you invincible was a liar. Her legs were shaking so much that they were close to buckling, the gym bag on her shoulder was too heavy, and her thick black winter jacket felt impossibly tight, as though it was squeezing the air from her lungs.

Instinct told her to run.

If only her feet would cooperate.

Her shoulders slumped when the monster took a step towards her and her kit bag dropped to the ground. The shinai case slid down her other arm but she caught it at the last second. The feel of the bamboo sword through the black canvas bag was reassuring and instilled a strange sense of calm in her. Lauren tried to remember her kendo training and everything she had just practiced in class but nothing came to her. She stared at the monster, still trying to comprehend what was happening.

Instinct changed its mind.

Her other hand automatically reached across and undid the ties on the shinai bag. Lauren swallowed and kept her movements slow, not wanting to startle the beast into reacting. The end of the bag flapped open and she reached inside, locking her right hand tightly around the white leather hilt of the bamboo sword. She drew it and let the carry-case fall to the ground.

This was insane.

Her shinai would last five seconds against such a huge creature.

It didn’t matter. Her only chance of escape was to stun it with a direct hit and run for her life. Her knees wobbled. That was, if she could run.

Taking deep breaths, Lauren shuffled backwards as the beast advanced and moved into a fighting stance. She brought her shinai around in front of her, clutching it so tightly with both hands that her knuckles turned white.

One breath. Two. Three.

With a loud cry, she launched herself at the creature. It reacted slowly, glowing yellow eyes widening. Lauren struck it between its ears and it yelped. The sound brought a smile to her face.

It was a short-lived smile.

The monster lashed out, flinging a heavy paw into her stomach and sending her flying into the wall of the alley. Her breath left her on impact and pain blasted through every inch of her. She grunted and fell onto the hard tarmac. Another huge paw flew at her and she rolled forwards to avoid being pulverised. She turned at the last moment and grabbed her shinai, desperate to protect herself. She was too damn young to die.

A low snarl sent a shudder down her spine and fear stole her breath away. Lauren scrambled to her feet and backed off, her bamboo sword trembling in front of her. The moon peeked out from behind a cloud and lit the world. Her heart stopped.

Holy God, the monster was more frightening in the light than it had ever been in the darkness. Long strings of saliva rolled down its fangs and dark fur tufted down its spine, raised like hackles. It wasn’t a wolf, but it wasn’t a man either. It was somewhere in between. An abomination. Something straight out of her dreams.

She’d dreamt of wolves and monsters before, and each time she had ended up fighting for her life.

It lowered its head and snarled again, hunkering down. It was going to attack.

This wasn’t a dream. It was a living nightmare.

Lauren’s fight left her and she moved backwards, faster now. Her heart started at a pace, thumping erratically in her throat. She clutched her shinai and glanced around. It was only just gone ten at night. Someone would pass by. Her neighbourhood wasn’t normally this quiet. Any moment now, someone would come and help her. She’d only left her kendo class fifteen minutes ago and she’d been first out of the door. A couple of the men in her class lived near her. One of them would come. Someone would. Anyone? Thirty-four was definitely too young to die. She didn’t want to be killed in the night as her parents had been.

She opened her mouth to call out for help but no sound left her lips. Her voice had died the moment her eyes had locked with the monster’s ones. She saw her death reflected in them, saw how easily it would tear her to shreds and how she wasn’t going to make it out of this alive. Emptiness settled in her mind, ringing in her ears.

Cold stillness shrouded the world.

The beast leapt.

Her heart leapt too.

Shrieking, Lauren raised the bamboo sword to defend herself and flinched away, screwing her eyes shut. Only sound came to her.

The sing of metal cutting through air, an ear-splitting howl of pain, and then a wet slapping noise.

Silence followed.

Lauren breathed hard, hunched up with her bamboo sword still held in front of her face. Her rough gulps of air filled the night. When everything had been quiet for a minute, she realised that something had happened to the monster and that she wasn’t dead. She cracked an eye open.

The first thing she saw made her retch.

Spread across the alley were guts, blood and the two halves of a naked man. Her stomach rolled in response to the gruesome sight and she took a step backwards. It hadn’t been a man a moment ago. Her eyes hadn’t been lying to her even though her mind had. It had been a monster—a wolf that could stand on its hind legs, over six feet tall, and had tried to kill her. She looked at her bamboo sword. Splatters of blood covered the length of it, soaking into the white leather cap at the end. She couldn’t have killed him with it. It wasn’t possible.

The sound of steel sliding against something made her look up.

Her eyes widened and she dropped her weapon.

A tall man stood opposite her on the other side of the dead person. His long black coat fitted snugly to his slim frame and the stand up collar rose so high that it created a funnel that masked the lower half of his face, held closed by two thick bands of bright gleaming metal across the front. The wind tousled the finger-length spiked strands of his dark hair, shifting them across his pale forehead.

Shimmering silver eyes stared at her, pupils wide in the low light.

Her heart thudded in response to the jolt she felt when her eyes met his.

How many times had she looked at someone and not felt anything? Every day she met the eye of people on the Tube or at work, or even her opponent in kendo, but she’d never experienced a jolt that shook her to her core.

Never had she been so aware of making eye contact.

The longer she looked into his eyes, the calmer and warmer she felt, until she wanted to stare into them for forever. Something about those eyes, about this man, was so familiar. She was sure that she didn’t know him, but at the same time, she was certain she did.

He stood unmoving, a sense of resolve about him. Everything suddenly felt like nothing but a nightmare, a vivid dream that this man had roused her from. His eyes narrowed. Invisible arms wrapped around her, holding her as soothing whispered words filled her mind. She was safe now.

Instinctively, she took a step towards him.

He lowered his head, giving Lauren the impression that he was bowing to her, awaiting a command or perhaps something else.

The man raised his head a fraction, so his eyes met hers again.

She snapped out of her trance when, without any sign of emotion, and with precise and practiced grace, he slid the long curved katana he held into the sheath hanging at his waist. The blade was clean but blood splattered his hands.

Lauren swallowed her heart and the fear that rushed through her again. Lost in his eyes, she’d forgotten what had happened. Everything had seemed so normal and the monster hadn’t existed. Now she was back in reality, standing in an alley with a dead man at her feet and the man who had killed him opposite her.

His silver eyes flashed in the moonlight.

Another monster?

She made no move to run, or to look away, not when he approached her and not even when he stopped two feet away, towering over her. She couldn’t move. His eyes had mesmerised her again. They melted from brightest silver to ice blue and she didn’t even try to convince herself that she’d imagined it. They had changed. Ribbons of black hair caressed his forehead and her fingers itched to brush them away, to stroke his skin in their place and sweep them from his eyes so she could see them more clearly. A strange wave of calm washed over her again, only this time the feeling went deeper. She felt at peace with the world.

Because no matter what happened, this man would protect her.

He extended his hand to her. Before she could consider what she was doing, she was reaching for him.

“We must leave.” His voice was smooth and sensual, deep and accented in a way she couldn’t place but she knew that she liked it because the sound of it added to her boneless feeling.

Without hesitation or fear, Lauren placed her hand into his. His fingers closed over hers.

A sense of connection filled her.

WIP Wednesday on a Thursday – Progress on the first book in my Eternal Mates series, with sneak peek!

After my post last week about my new paranormal romance series, Eternal Mates, and the fantastic response by some of my readers, I decided that I would move my schedule around to accommodate writing the whole of the first book in the series through in one go. The idea of stopping after only a third of the book was written in first draft didn’t sit well with me. I didn’t like the thought of going back to the book and having to complete it at a much later date, when my style and flow of language might be different from what it had been at the time I had written the first part.

So, on Thursday I sacrificed my day off to get the character profiles for eight main characters written up, finalised the outline of the first book, printed everything out and was eager to get going on writing the first book. I managed to get a lot of words done during just the first day of writing on Friday, clocking up 14000 words. I added a few hundred to that on Saturday but had other work demanding my attention. On Monday, it was another mixed day, but I got another chapter written. On Tuesday, I took a day off because I was about to go insane from the pressure of my current workload and deadlines, and my husband swept me out of the house for the day. I came back refreshed yesterday, hitting a cafe and getting another 13400 words of the book down in first draft. Today, I continued to work on the book, and wrote a further 9000 words.

The book is now 10 chapters long, and has 40776 words. I have around another 50000 to write, but if I can keep on top of my other work and keep this pace, I’ll have the first draft completed by the end of next week. I’m quite pleased by that.

I know you’re all desperate for Unleash, and my writing this book through from start to end is going to delay it, but truthfully it will only be a few weeks difference and Unleash needs more time to rest. Writing this book is helping clearly Unleash from my head and that will mean I can do a better job of editing it when I come back to it. See, there is a good side to this delay… because if I edited Unleash and did a poor job of it, that would be an even bigger delay. I won’t release anything until I’m satisfied with it. I’m all about putting quality books out there, not rush jobs.

Back to Eternal Mates. I’m really enjoying this world so far. The females stand on their own two feet and are more than happy to give hell to the males if they overstep the mark. The males are brash, dangerous, and more than happy to verbally spar with the females in an attempt to make them listen to reason / behave / not ignore a command (delete as appropriate) and will protect them when things go south.

The hero in particular is dreamy. He’s noble, a prince, and has that beautiful desire to take responsibility for his actions and suffer the consequences of self-sacrifice for the good of his people. You’ll like him… in fact, why don’t I introduce you to him?

Note: This is first draft material. Forgive any errors. I have skimmed it to avoid spoilers and such, but it’s unedited.

A little setting might be needed. Olivia is a scientist working for a hunter organisation, one of the few in the world who know about the existence of non-humans. She’s dedicated to studying new species but a turn of events meant she was cast out of favour with the senior members of the company, and she’s been stuck looking into already well-documented species of demons and fae.

A shot at redemption has just landed on her inspection table though in the form of an injured male from an unknown species, and due to a fabulous soiree to which she wasn’t invited, Olivia is in luck and she’s the only medically trained staff in the building… and now she has to inspect six-feet-six inches of dark, sexy, male… we join her a little into her investigation, when she’s already got him naked and hooked up to the machines in the lab.

Sneak Peek – Eternal Mates Book One

Olivia inspected his stomach, pressing in to feel his organs. He felt human but something about him, something other than his mysterious markings, told her that he wasn’t. She peered closer at the severe wounds on his stomach and chest.

“Specimen appears to have advanced healing ability. Age of blood around the wounds is indicative of a recent injury, but the wounds in question are already closed and beginning to scab over.” Many demon and fae species had heightened healing. He could be any number of them. Olivia carefully pulled his upper lip back and studied his teeth. “No fangs. Canines appear normal.”

She drew back and something caught her eye. She parted the wild strands of his short black hair and traced the pointed tip of his ear. Was he a demon? They had pointed ears.

Olivia hovered over him, looking down at his handsome bloodstained face. She had never seen a demon as beautiful, mysterious, or deadly as he was.

Deadly.

She could feel it like an aura around him.

He was dangerous.

And waking up.

Olivia scooted backwards and reached for the call button on the wall. She didn’t make it. His eyes slowly opened and she froze in mid-swing for the button, transfixed by them. They were incredible. She had never seen eyes like his. His irises were the most amazing shade of purple.

His gaze slid towards her but he didn’t move.

“What are you?” Olivia whispered it again as his eyes began to change, shifting to a normal shade of blue, and then his ears changed too, the points dulling until they appeared human. Adapting. He was studying his environment and her, and he was adapting.

It was incredible.

Fascinating.

She lowered her hand to her side and stared at him.

“Specimen appears able to blend into his environment, changing his appearance to conceal himself.”

She had never seen a demon do this. Many of them did it and she had heard the tales from the field agents, but she had never witnessed it.

“You are being held in a secure facility and no harm will come to you.” She hoped he understood English. His blue gaze narrowed with his frown, locked on her mouth as she spoke. Maybe he didn’t understand her.

He sat up in one fluid motion, swinging his legs over the edge of the inspection table, the movement so swift that it startled her and she shot backwards, distancing herself. Her heart thundered in her throat. She should have pressed the call button.

She should have strapped him down.

Stupid.

Her gaze darted to the red button off to her right. Could she make it there and sound the alarm before he attacked?

“Where am I?” The sound of his deep voice sent a fiery tremble through her, at odds to his lithe figure. The commanding edge to it had her forgetting the call button and automatically answering him, because he didn’t sound like the sort of man you could piss off and live to tell the tale.

“At a secure research facility in London.” She hoped he didn’t ask what she had been doing to him while he had been unconscious because now that he was awake, very awake, that sense of danger he radiated had only grown stronger. Her shot at resuscitating her ailing career looked as though he might kill her if he didn’t like any of the answers to his questions.

His blue gaze moved around the room, cataloguing everything, a keen edge to it. Strategising. He had adapted to blend in to his environment, and now he was figuring a way out of it.

“How did you do that?” she said, unable to get her voice above a whisper. His attention snapped back to her.

“How did I do what?” He could definitely grasp her language.

“Your eyes… your ears.” She pointed a shaky finger at them.

He planted his hands on the edge of the table either side of his hips and she struggled not to look down. Her guest didn’t appear to have any qualms about being naked in front of a stranger. He sat on the table, frowning at the equipment in the room. His gaze caught on the wires attached to the machines and he followed them to his chest. He raised a single black eyebrow and pulled the sticky pads off his body.

“Strange to ask me how and not why,” he said at last and looked up at her through his long black lashes, his blue eyes holding an glimmer of curiosity.

“I’m a medical doctor… a scientist.” She pulled at the chest of her long white coat, drawing his attention to it.

He glanced at it and then back around the room. His gaze lingered on the tray of tools to his left, narrowed, and then slid to her. A threat. She had enough experience of the world to know when someone was silently threatening her. He didn’t intend to use the scalpels and other implements on her. No. He meant to warn her that if she dared to attempt to use them on him, she would come off worse.

Olivia held her hands up in front of her. “Listen, I’m just curious about your species, and the things you can do. I wanted to help you.”

He grimaced and his grip on the edge of the table tightened until his arms shook. He ground out dark words in a foreign tongue and paled further. The edges of his irises turned purple.

The heart rate monitor still linked to his finger went crazy. He scowled at the machine and tried to move to take the clip off. His hands trembled violently.

“You’re not well.” Olivia reached out to steady him, instinct telling her to help him. She caught his upper arms and gasped. He was burning up, shaking beneath her fingers, his skin clammy. “You need to rest.”

“I will be fine… with a little fluids.” Pain grated in his deep voice and he swallowed hard.

“I wasn’t sure what to give you.” Olivia pressed her palm to his forehead. A fever? Was it part of his healing process or was his condition getting worse? “I wasn’t sure what would harm or help you.”

He leaned forwards and his breath skated over her bare neck. She shivered, a hot rush sweeping through her.

“I know what fluid I need,” he whispered low, his voice barely there and teasing, stirring unbidden heat in her veins and quickening her pulse.

“Tell me and I’ll get it.” She tried to draw back and his hands shot up, fingers closing tightly around her upper arms.

“Oh, you already have it.”

He struck hard on the left side of her throat.

Did you enjoy the sneak peek? Want me to do another one in my next WIP Wednesday post about the series?

Does this sound like the sort of book you want to read?
