FINALLY the Steam-Powered Drawing!

So, before we get into more steam-powered meatiness (goodness, but that sounds ...interesting), I'd like to announce the winners of the long-anticipated jewelry drawing. I am so very sorry that this has taken longer to do than I expected. My out of state move ended up pretty much eating all my time from late December to ...well, now. Nonetheless, I know there's no excuse and that this wasn't cool. I take full responsibility for the delay and deeply apologize.

So without further ado, our winners are:

For the necklace based on "Suffer Water": [info]seismickitten!

For the necklace based on "To Follow the Waves": [info]ambelies!

I also did a drawing for two additional neckaces, both of which are based on the Rachel M. Brown story "Steel Rider". The winners of these beauties are:

[info] unhappytriad and [info] ashnistrike . Pictures of these are forthcoming since I accidently left both back in Utah :(. Sorry, you two. I'll get them shipped to me asap so they can be shipped to you.

Congratulations! Please email me your shipping address so I can get these out to you :)

Moving on, I also wanted to let everyone who preordered the book know that your books are in transit to me and I'm expecting them any day now. I didn't realize that I wouldn't be able to place an order for them until just before the book went live, so that's why you'll be getting them a little bit later than I expected. To make up for this, I'm putting everyone who preordered the book into a special drawing for one of two more necklaces. I will be announcing the winners of that drawing here tomorrow--if only because I have to photograph both pieces and I have to go through my huge pre-order list to get everyone's name ;).

As another consolation, I've also got Tara Sommers to sign her story for you. I'll also be entering all of you, regardless of when you preordered Steam-Powered into a drawing for a goodie bag for Steam-Powered II, which will be out later this year. Again, my deepest apologies for the frustration and inconvenience. I'd never done preorders before this book, and next time I'll have a better idea of how to keep this going smoothly.

Now, for those of you who didn't preorder and still want the book, I have a favor to ask. Since January 26th, Steam-Powered</a> has done pretty well on Amazon for a small press release; whenever I check its rank is usually hovering between 125,000 and 260,000. Yes, not as strong as a big press anthology, but pretty good. But I think it can do better. I'd like to see the book get into at least 20,000, and I know it can go even higher--remember, the higher it gets, the more people pay attention to these awesome authors and their stories, which I really believe are some of the strongest I have ever read.

So, where do you come in? PLEASE retweet the book's Amazon link, blog about it, and review it! Said link is: http://www.tinyurl.com/steampoweredbook. If you got a review copy from me last year and haven't yet blogged about it, doing so this month would be incredibly helpful. If you want to review it and don't have a copy, it is never too late to ask me!

Steam-Powered IS HERE!!!

It's here! If you didn't pre-order and wanted to wait 'til the book came out, now is your chance. The paperback is on sale at TorquereBooks.com, Torquere's book store. I am told it will be on Amazon shortly, so please don't fret if you've been waiting!

Also, contributor Shweta Narayan has an awesome offer for you if you buy the book by Jan. 31, or if you've ordered already:

If you pre-ordered this book, or buy it this month, that's by the end of January 31st (let's say my time, US Pacific time), I will give you the drawing I've been posting teasers of. I'll ask that you don't share it further, but you can print it for your own use. It'll be big enough to be printed at 300dpi. (Full disclosure: I have Moar Ambitious plans for the picture too, for which I will probably make a small full version generally available in a couple months; however, it won't be nearly as cool as the full-size thingy.)

Now, I want to promise that the drawing will be done by Jan 31st, but given health foo I can only promise to give it my best shot, and that you'll get it as soon as I have it.

(ETA: I should probably mention that the character depicted in my drawing is the POV character in my Steam Powered story....)

I've seen this artwork (process pictures of which) Shweta has been posting for awhile now. And folks, it is truly wonderful and DEFINITELY worth your time :). If you've preordered be sure to tell her so she can get the picture to you.

Now, as always, small press books like Steam-Powered need all the help they can get, especially when they are chock full of characters who are lesbians and women of color. If you could help me spread the word I'd be very thankful. In fact, make an icon promoting the book and post it here and I'll enter you into a drawing for a third Steam-Powered-inspired necklace and a copy of the book. :) You have 'til Feb. 10, so get going!

Also, I know that I owe a drawing for two necklaces, which I was hoping to get done before Christmas. Circumstances beyond my control prevented this from happening (i.e. having to move), and I deeply apologize. I will be officially doing this drawing on Friday Jan. 28, so watch this space! Since I don't have the books on hand at the moment, I will be shipping the prize (and the postcards) in early February. Once again, my apologies for the delay.

People who have preordered! Your copies are on their way to me and I should be getting them around Feb. 1. I'll ship them as soon as I can after they arrive, and will post when the box gets here -- with picspam!

Oh History Channel

Last night you had an awesome documentary on Nazi Germany. Today you have reality shows about pawn brokers. I mean, nothing against pawn brokers (and reality TV that isn't about screaming and drama and greed), but what happened to the days when you were wall-to-wall documentaries? When I and others jokingly called you "the Hitler Channel" because I couldn't go a day without at least one World War II-related thing popping up?

Sold: Two Antologies

The contracts have been signed and delivered, and these can finally be announced. I've sold two anthologies and will be reading for them in the next few month. The first is Femmes Fatales, an anthology of erotic/romantic mystery stories to Lethe Press. The second, which I think will be cause for equal excitement, is Steam-Powered 2: More Lesbian Steampunk Stories!

The Guidelines are as follows:

Steam-Powered 2: More Lesbian Steampunk Stories is an anthology of steampunk stories that feature lesbian-identified protagonist and which strives to be inclusive of underrepresented (and often misrepresented!) identities in steampunk and lesbian fiction.

Although "steampunk" is a fairly broad genre, we are interested in the following:

* Stories set in the past and present as we know them, or in an alternate past or present, as well as a future in which 19th Century technology dominates.
* Stories that involve 19th Century steam technology or retro-future technology that does not involve steam. For example, if your story is set in the Gobi Desert, the lack of water may make this technology look different than it would in a society that has enough water for steam technology to be feasible. For a good idea of what I mean here, please read this essay by Steam-Powered 1 contributor Amal El-Mohtar: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/towards-a-steampunk-without-steam.
* Stories that explore and critique 19th and early 20th Century notions of colonialism, empire, race, sex and sexuality.
* The editor also has a strong preference for stories set outside Victorian England and the United States, stories that feature women of color protagonists, stories that feature protagonists from the lower or working class, stories with disabled protagonists (including those with cognitive disabilities and mental illnesses), and stories whose protagonists are not Christian. This is not to say that more 'typical' steampunk stories are unwelcome, just that they will be a harder sell.
* While Torquere Press publishes several romance and erotica titles, stories need not have romantic or erotic elements.

We are not interested in the following:

* Stories that exoticize, misrepresent or demonize lesbians, people of color, people with disabilities, or any culture or religion. (look up "cultural appropriation" for an idea of what we mean here).
* Stories with anti-lesbian clichés (such as the lesbian who would really enjoy heterosexual sex, if she met the right man)
* Stories with villains whose sole motivation for being bad is a mental illness or "being crazy."
* Poetry
* Fan fiction (stories featuring characters that are not copyrighted to the author)

Submission Period: February 1 – March 30.
Word Count: 3,000 – 10,000 words (though shorter stories may be considered). **PLEASE query with your story idea first to save both you and the editor time.
Payment: $35 per story.

If your query is accepted, submit stories in .rtf or .doc format to JoSelle Vanderhooft at upstart.crow@gmail.com. Please title your submissions as [Author's Last Name]: Steam-Powered II Submission, and use standard manuscript format that includes your full name (and pen name if applicable), address, phone number and email.

Femme Fatales is an anthology of mystery and erotica featuring lesbian and bisexual-identified women. From gritty 30s-style noir to sweet cozies to heart-pounding politically-edged thrillers, we are looking for stories between 3,000 and 10,000 words

What we'd like to see:

* Stories in all mystery genres (however, do note that the editor has a fondness for action-packed thrillers and creative (and feminist) takes on noir).
* While this is an erotica-focused anthology, we are open to reading stories that do not feature explicit sex as long as they have romantic elements.
* Although this is not an anthology of speculative fiction, stories with science fiction, fantasy or horror elements (or any combination thereof) are welcome.
* We are especially interested in reading stories about queer women of color, lesbian or bisexual-identified transgender women, and stories set in locations outside of the United States and Western Europe.

We are not interested in the following:

* Rehashes of common mystery tropes that don't attempt to spin them in a new and fresh way.
* Stories with one dimensional antagonists, including those whose misdeeds are attributed to "being crazy" and especially those who do bad things because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
* Anti-lesbian clichés like the dead lesbian and the lesbian who just needs a good man to make her straight.
* Poetry
* Fan Fiction (stories using characters whose copyright the author does not own)

Submission Period: May 1-June. 30.
Length: 3,000-10,000 words. *PLEASE* query with your story idea first to save yourself and the editor time.
Payment: $25-$75

Can you help this family?

ETA: WE DID IT! $970 RAISED, SO NO MORE DONATIONS ARE NEEDED. THANK YOU ALL! <3

Another post on something completely different. My friend [info] fire_and_a_rose tells me that her former housemate is living without heat thanks to the negligence of another housemate, who is out of town and has left them with a $900 bill. She says:

The oil ran out; Mylia called the company, and was shocked to learn that they had never been paid, and with late fees now owe over $900. Harrison [[Jo: that is, the other housemate]] would not answer texts or emails for days--he was out of town--and when he came back said that he gave teh check to someone else at work to mail.

He also said he would pay the bill Friday, the end of the week, which means no heat till then.

Mylia's daughter is sick. Her cat is sitting on the heater, crying. And Mylia herself just came out of the ER with health problems related to lungs. All three are living in her room with one electric heater.

On top of that, the pipes are at risk, as is the oil heater itself.

This makes me furious and very, very worried for Mylia and her family. If you can help at all, please click the widget below, or just repost this link: http://fire-and-a-rose.livejournal.com/1398308.html

Steam-Powered: The Big Darn Post of Everything You Need to Know, But Didn't Know You Needed

So. Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories. I've made a lot of posts about this anthology, but it occurs to me that it'd be nice to have all the information centralized.

TOC:

N.K. Jemisin: "The Effluent Engine"
Georgina Bruce: "Brilliant"
D.L. MacInnes: "Owl Song"
Sara M. Harvey: "Where the Ocean Meets the Sky"
Beth Wodzinski: "Suffer Water"
Rachel Manija Brown: "Steel Rider"
Shira Lipkin: "Truth and Life"
Matthew Kressel: The Hand that Feeds"
Meredith Holmes: "Love in the Time of Airships"
Teresa Wymore: "Under the Dome"
Tara Sommers: "Clockwork and Music"
Mikki Kendall: "Copper for a Trickster"
Mike Allen: "Sleepless, Burning Life"
Shweta Narayan: "The Padishah Begum's Reflections"
Amal El-Mohtar: "To Follow the Waves"

Why are the first and last story linked? Because "The Effluent Engine" has been available online since last year and "To Follow the Waves" just went up at PodCastle. I have not yet had a chance to listen, but everyone's telling me that the reading by Marguerite Croft ( [info] albionidaho ) is awesome. And, hey, it's PodCastle, so you know that it is made of awesome.

Release Date: Jan. 25

Price: $13.95

Preorders: Still being taken. Email me at upstart(dot)crow @ gmail (dot) com for information. If you have emailed me and received no response, try again. I've been out of town and my email is also being...let's just say "selective" about which messages it gives me. Meaning that anything about Steam-Powered has either been hiding in the junk mail folder or not arriving at all.

Where can I buy it when it comes out?: Amazon for sure. The link is not live yet, but I'll let you know when it is. Also, TorquereBooks.com, which is Torquere Press' bookstore.

Contests: I had to unexpectedly leave town late in December and have been dealing with a sick cat, and haven't yet done the drawing. I'm really, really sorry about that. I will be announcing the winners of the jewelry sets on Friday, so stay tuned. There will also be more necklace giveaways throughout January and February, so please watch this space and our Facebook page. (If you've got a Facebook, please like us! There will be one Facebook-only necklace drawing).

Miscellaneous: Any other questions? Comments? Let me know by commenting here or emailing me. :)

gip: New Year, New Icon

Happy New Year, everyone! As befits the crow theme of this journal, I thought Count Olaf and the crows from The Vile Village would make a great new icon now that Snow Miser has been retired for another 12 months.
