Please Vote for Hellebore & Rue

It's that time of year again, and the Rainbow Awards are upon us. This is a fairly new award for LGBTQ books, which also includes a cover competition.

And right now the cover for Hellebore & Rue is up for preliminary voting. Said cover is pasted below. If you like it as much as [info] and I do, please consider voting for it here.

Femmes Fatales submissions

Sorry, LJ. I know I've been neglecting you lately. I've had cons to go to and deadlines to meet and lately I seem to be blogging a lot at Twitter--the blog for people with a lot to say but little time at the moment to say it (I'm JoVanderhooft there if anyone wants to add me).

Anywhoo, I wanted to talk about submissions for Femmes Fatales, the anthology of lesbian mysteries with a romantic/erotic edge that I'm putting together for Lethe Press. First, I'm extending the deadline for submissions to July 30, and potentially longer (you'll see why in a minute).

Second, I really need stories. I've gotten very few of them so far, and a lot of them haven't really been mysteries.

Third, I really need stories that have more of a mystery element. Stories about women out for revenge can, of course, have mystery elements, but I'm getting a lot of them, and I can't have a book that consists solely of revenge stories--that's just not the focus of this anthology.

So, please help me spread the word? Posts on duotrope and Ralan will be forthcoming, of course, but I've found that I often get my best stories from people who follow my LJ and/or who read my calls for submissions on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I know there are lots of mystery writers out there, and mystery writers who also like erotica and romance. I'm here, and I'm looking for you! Email me. :)

Guidelines, once again are here.

The Hellebore & Rue Necklace Giveaway Part 1: Bridges and Lullabies

I've been meaning to post this contest for quite sometime, and now here it is!

This is the necklace created for Rrain Prior's wonderful story "Bridges and Lullabies," which appears in Hellebore & Rue: Tales of Queer Women and Magic", which was just released in print form from Lethe Press (Drollerie Press did the e-book). The story concerns an elemental sorceress and guitarist on the trail of a fire elemental causing havoc in a forest, and has one of the most creative elemental magic systems I've ever seen.

So how do you win this puppy? Make a post about Hellebore & Rue on your LJ, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media platform and leave a link here before June 15.

(PS: People who entered the contest for copies of Hellebore & Rue, please don't worry! I haven't forgotten you. Due to UPS' incompetence, my editor's copies got sent back to Lethe and I haven't received them yet. I'll make a post as soon as I do).

My Gaylaxicon Schedule

In case you happen to be in Atlanta this weekend, here's what i'm doing!

Saturday

11 a.m.: Readings from Hellebore & Rue (Steve Berman, Catherine Lundoff, and I read from Catherine and my new anthology about lesbian magic users!) (Cent IV)

3 p.m.: Q&A Session with me (Cent III) I hope people will come and I won't be staring at an empty room going "Uhhhh..."

5 p.m.: Anthologies: When they work, why they don't, and our favorite gay stories: (Steve, Catherine and me again!) (Cent IV)

There will also be a Hellebore & Rue party in my hotel room at 7 p.m. Tea, chocolate, assorted snacks, and prizes will be given. Room number obviously TBA.

I'll be wandering around the hotel roughly around noon tomorrow, so please say hi!

Hellebore & Rue: The Print Edition

So, belated post is belated. In between fetching my cat and coming down with a stomach...er, something, Hellebore & Rue, the anthology of stories about lesbian magic users which I co-edited with Catherine Lundoff is finally out in print. Lethe Press has produced the print edition while Drollerie Press did the e-book edition (you can also buy said e-book edition on Drollerie's Website)

Here's a great review of it by Jarla Tangh, which you really should read. Here's my favorite part:

Whenever I read a work of fiction, I am longing to be transported. I want to love what's going on and to love whomever it's happening to. Editors know this and the best of them patiently sift through hours of preternatural wordage in order to yield a suitable harvest. I bow to the wisdom of Joselle Vanderhooft and Catherine Lundoff here.

Twelve tales of women loving women and their magic brought me the required ensorcellment. Milleus ranged from a slightly altered here-and-now to a fantastical futureverse. Certain stories reverberated with the burr of a fast-moving dragon's scales, obscured their happy endings as in gazing into a cloudy crystal ball, and plunged the reader into another character's existence in the literary equivalent of bi-location. Several stories in particular act as threshold guardians with their shared archetype of a troubled stranger bringing challenge to an established magic-worker and two intimate companions relying upon one another to battle malefic forces.

I realize I've been a bit remiss in talking about this book, due both to the chaos that comes when moving across country, starting a new job, and dealing with a bunch of unforeseen problems (Florida, why do you hate my skin?). And this is the reason why I'm going to be throwing a HUGE, days long release party here on my LJ.

What's that, you say? How can this be? Whose responsible this?

In a short while, I'll be receiving 10 copies of the book that I can give out for review. If you want one, all you have to do is link to this post somewhere (FB, twitter, LJ, carrier pigeon), and put the link in a post to this post between today and Friday, the start of Gaylaxicon (which is where I will be this weekend if you want to say hi). I'll then pick 10 lucky winners and send their copies out as soon as they arrive. Simple.

There will also be necklaces just as soon as I dig them out of my boxes. (A lot of my beads got left behind in Utah by accident, and they're just now making it to me.)

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

Steam-Powered II: all done

As of today I have read all Steam-Powered II submissions and responded to them. If you haven't received a response from me, please let me know in case I misfiled something.

As much as I'd love to, I am not going to post the table of contents as it stands now. That'll have to wait a little longer for a few reasons. But fear not. All will be unveiled in July, if not sooner :).

And now to get cracking on Femmes Fatales. You're going to send me something to consider, right, gentle readers?

Femmes Fatales: Now open!

Due to spending the first third of the week dealing with getting my kitty from my family in Utah and the second third helping my cold-riddled partner, this announcement is getting out later than I wanted.

Still! We proceed.

Submissions for Femmes Fatales , the anthology of lesbian erotic/romantic mystery stories I'm putting together for Lethe Press, are officially opening on Sunday, May 1 (and if you want to send anything in this weekend, that's fine, too. I'll read it.). The link in this paragraph will take you to the guidelines if you need a refresher.

Y'all wowed me with your submissions for Steam-Powered (which I'm still dithering over), so I'm looking forward to being wowed again.

My son!

Tomorrow I fly back to Utah to pick up the beautiful kitty in my icon and bring him to Florida. :)

Please keep us both in your prayers and thoughts. I've never traveled with an animal before, and even though Oscar cat is well-behaved and sweet-tempered, he's about 12 years old and has never been in a crowded airport or on a plane. And then he'll be away from me for part of the journey on a special airline that caters only to pets will also be hard (tl;dr: he's old and 16 pounds and I thought this would be the least traumatic thing for him).

So nervous.
