Ruth Edgett grew up on the North Shore of Prince Edward Island. A writer since she was old enough to hold a pen, Ruth began earning a living as a newspaper reporter in P.E.I. and Newfoundland and Labrador. Later, in Ontario, she became a communications consultant. Now she writes for her own pleasure and, she hopes, yours.

"A Watch in the Night" is a creative telling of the story of her mother's family, who were lighkeepers on a tiny island off the north shore of Nova Scotia.

Her next book is a collection of short fiction (still shopping to publishers) inspired by stories told by both her mother and father, and by her own research.

If I find that I am having difficulty writing about one particular thing, or one particular project, I switch to another. If my writing begins to feel forced or like it's no longer coming "from the zone", I stop writing and do something else for a while. That old saw, "A change is as good as a rest" works for writers, too.(less)

If a book or story doesn't exist that deals with the subject I want to explore, I can create it. I love watching my stories unfold on the screen or the page, and--just like a reader--I love being excited about what's going to happen next. The best thing is when characters take on lives of their own, when events lead me down their own unknown paths. That's the joy of writing!(less)
