Ouch

Maybe honesty is not always the best policy. Here is a comment from a student whose class participated in the Scholastic Dear America webcast:
"I am sorry but I did not like your books. I did not like your books because they are a little boring and they teach us about history which I find to be boring too. I also wanted it to be exciting but it was not fun or exciting. But, the only part that was cool was when you took questions from other kids and answered them. I liked that."
At least she was sorry that she didn't like the books!

Dear America Webcast

Thanks to my fellow webcasters, Lois Lowry (Like the Willow Tree), Andrea Davis Pinkney (With the Might of Angels) and Lisa Sandell (intrepid and beloved Dear America editor), and host, Billy DeMichelle, for making the recent History Alive! webcast so much fun. (Okay: it was fun after it was all over. It was nerve-wrenching before and during. I had to memorize! Wear something with lapels*! Try not to faint!)
Watch the webcast here!
*Special thanks to daughter, Quinn, for loaning me the dress!

Fan Letter Friday

Letters like this make me wish I could afford to give books out to every kid who wants one. This is one reason why I donate to literacy organizations like Page Ahead and First Book.

Birthday Love

It's okay that Tyler and I are celebrating his birthday today, instead of the official day (tomorrow) because he actually started trying to be born on the 27th. We're planning to dine at ilili, a Lebanese restaurant in Brooklyn that my agent loves. Can you say baba ganoush? Heaven!
In addition to the delicious meal, I predict lots of laughter. There is no one who tickles my funny bone like Tyler. That talent of his is not without its dangers. Once, as I was merging onto I-5, he said something so funny, I nearly karoomed off the car next to me. As we will both be on foot tonight, we should be able to avoid repeating this situation.
Tyler, just a few short years ago.
Happy Birthday to my favorite son!

Jet Setting

If my alarm went off at 4:15 this morning as scheduled, I am now in the air, winging my way to New York for a live webcast for Scholastic's Dear America books. I know I'll be tongue-tied in the presence of my "co-stars" Lois Lowry and Andrea Davis Pinkney. Some of my teacher and librarian friends around the country have emailed me to let me know they'll be tuning in on Wednesday. Knowing there will be friendly ears out there helps me with my butterflies.  Almost packed!
The timing of this event couldn't be more wonderful as it will allow me to take son Tyler to dinner for his birthday while I'm in town! Yay!
