Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
My New Year's resolution to give up coffee lasted exactly three days, until a crashing headache kept me awake all night. What was I thinking?
But my resolution to update my office is one I'm firmly sticking to. An easy-to-read monitor and Mini Mac are replacing my laptop which has led to the need for a different desk, better suited to the new set-up.
Dust, junk and computer not included
So, if you live in the Seattle area and are in need of a 5' long desk,* with 5' long keyboard platform, shoot me an email. Added bonus: this is the desk at which I wrote the Newbery Honor book, Hattie Big Sky. Who knows? It could bring you some writing luck, too!
*there's a 4' wide bookcase, too.

January Joys

Congratulations to sweet friend Sundee Frazier on her new book:

Here's a bit about the book:
Brendan Buckley is headed to middle school, and he has lots of big questions. Will he be able to keep his green anole, Einstein, alive? Why won't new-girl Morgan Belcher leave him alone? And what will he propose for the national science competition his class is entering?
I can only imagine Brendan's challenges as he realizes that when a girl won't leave you alone, that means she likes you!
Can't wait to read it! (first I have to go find out what an anole is)

New (to me) Blog reviews The Friendship Doll
I've just discovered Slatebreakers' bloggers Briana and Sarah, fellow fans of Ann Shirley. Their blog takes its name from the incident in which Ann Shirley cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he teases her about her red hair. This is how they introduce themselves:
Anne Shirley is one of our heroes. When she cracked that slate over Gilbert's head, she took circumstances into her own hands, and made it clear that she was not going to tolerate being teased or objectified by boys (even one who might turn out all right – more than all right – in the end). As book lovers, educators, and feminists, we have started this blog in search of slatebreaking moments in children's and young adult literature. We're writing about girls in kidlit and YA who challenge expectations, stand up for themselves and their communities and have a positive impact on the world around them, fictional and otherwise. Expect to see a wide variety of material on this site – a mix of book reviews, critical essays and things that generally interest us. Thanks for joining the conversation!
I for one signed up to follow them. What's not to like about a blog that celebrates strong girls in children's literature!
Their spirited and honest (albeit, a tiny bit painful!) review of The Friendship Doll is here.

Nice News for the New Year

I unplugged a bit over the holidays and re-emerged from my "slumber" to discover that The Friendship Doll is one of the seven finalists for the Cybils Middle Grade Fiction award. This award was developed by the amazing children's lit book blogger community. These people shoot from the hip which makes this honor very special.
It's quite the list, too:
Tom Angleberger, Darth Paper Strikes Back
G.Neri, Ghetto Cowboy
Trent Reedy, Words in the Dust
Wendy Wan-Long Shang,The Great Wall of Lucy Wu
Elissa Brent Weissman, Nerd Camp
Lisa Yee, Warp Speed
I say we just arm-wrestle for the winner. Is that okay with you, Cybils judges?
