Thought for the day

Not Loving Nature Today

It was bad enough yesterday to mistake a rat for Winston's squeaky squirrel (still creeped out) while we were re-organizing the shed but this morning, while refilling the finch feeder at Shangri-Lar, a cranky wasp left his mark right on my heel.
I think I'll stay inside for a few days.

I have a serious cookie crush

True confessions: I'm not a huge frosted cookie fan. The prettier they are, the less tasty they seem to be. But Alison Cardechi of Sweet Themes Bakery has changed all that. She has baked adorable (and delish!) cookies for several events for me now, including a few dozen lady bugs for our daughter's birthday. Are these cookies good you ask? Well, let me answer that in one word: Yes!!!
Best of luck to Alison, Chief Cookie Officer, with her bakery.

September 6, 1975

Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday!
When I burst into tears as we started down the aisle, none of my bridesmaids would even look at me. Dad, never comfortable around tears, simply handed me his hanky. I really did want to be married; it was just that the wedding stuff seemed a bit much (thank god I got married in the 70's and not now!).
We met at 17, married at 21 and are still together a few (ahem) years later. You have to love a man who really never wanted a dog but now loves ours fiercely.
Happy Anniversary, Neil!

Happy Anniversary to sister Ellen and brother-in-law John, also married on this day, but 11 years after us.

School Volunteers

If you've always wanted to help out at your local school but weren't sure what to do once you got there, have I got the book for you! My former student, Paddy Eger, has written Educating America: 101 Strategies for Adult Assistants in K-8 Classrooms to encourage adults to help out where they are desperately needed: in our public schools.

If you live in the Puget Sound area, please come to her book launch on Friday, September 16, 4:30-7:00 pm at the Maplewood K-8 Commons, 18500 200th St. SW, Edmonds, WA 98026 (I've been to this school and it is beautiful!). If you can't attend, go to her website to learn more about this incredibly helpful book.

Mew's News

My friend, Lois Brandt, has started an e-newsletter, Mew's News, that is chockfull of great writing information and tips.  (Love the motto: "Go ahead. Write until your butt hurts.)
For instance, she's provided a writing prompt for each day of this month -- virtually eliminating any excuses for not sitting at the keyboard.
If you are interested in receiving her every-other-month letter, send her an email at Lois@LoisBrandt.com, with "subscribe" in the subject line.

And who is Mew you ask? Here's Lois' answer: Mew was a cat who enjoyed life — pets, sunbeams, flashlights and, of  course, food.[image error]

What a good month this is!

Can I just say that three of my favorite people have birthdays this month?

Carolyn "Kelly" Hawley Larson, ready to roll

Kelly Larson, my mother-in-law, will be celebrated today, September 3rd.

My darling sister-in-law, Diane, will be having breakfast in bed (I'm sure!) on September 4th.

And writer friend and marketing mentor, Sara Easterly, parties hearty on September 6th.
What a great month this is!

You Cannot Avoid Me

In case you just can't get enough of Kirby Larson, you can find a guest post on the Village Books blog here in anticipation of my upcoming September 10 visit to the bookstore at 2 pm. The post gives a bit of the back story of The Friendship Doll but I will tell all on the 10th!

And my good friend, Janet Carey, has a blog devoted to shining the spotlight on libraries and librarians and the people who love them. Click over to Library Lions to read about why I love librarians even more than I love Fran's Gray Salt Caramels. (and that's saying something)
