This seems relevant in view of my post, earlier today, regarding the LDS Church endorsement of anti-discrimination laws in Utah:   http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/01/28/...   My personal position would be that, although I doubt that this gun range owner’s position will survive legal challenge, I think she ought to have the right to refuse service [Read More...]

Providing blankets for Syrian refugees

I doubt that most Latter-day Saints are keenly aware of the work that their church and their fellow Mormons are doing around the world.  Here’s a story from nearly a year ago, now:   http://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/huma...   I’m pleased beyond expression when I learn of things such as this.

The greatest service to humankind?

“Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to the country and to mankind is to bring up a family. But here again, because there is nothing to sell, there is a very general disposition to regard a married woman’s work as no work at all, and to take it [Read More...]

Suicide, Mormonism, and young gays

Many claims are made about Mormonism and an alleged epidemic of suicides among young gays.  These claims are often made in an effort to suggest that there’s something wrong and dangerous about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.   Do these allegations hold up?  Tom Stringham puts them under the lens: [Read More...]

A reminder regarding 14 March

In case you missed my earlier announcement or have forgotten it, I want to call your attention, once again, to an interesting conference that’s coming up in slightly more than a month and a half:   http://www.mormoninterpreter.com/save...   Some of us will be meeting this coming Saturday to make specific plans for the conference. Homosexuality and Incest

(I suspect that this post’s title will attract a bit of attention.)   A few days ago, I posted a link to the story of a young woman — an adult, though not by much (chronologically speaking) — who would like to marry her father, to whom she recently, happily, lost her virginity.   [Read More...]

New Testament 50-51

Matthew 4:24; 5:1-12 Compare Mark 3:7-13; Luke 6:17-23   I have a very great deal to say about the Beatitudes, but not the time to say very much of it right now.  I hope to eventually write a small book on them.   For right now, I’ll content myself with a brief comment [Read More...]

The text of the archbishop’s remarks at BYU

For those who might be interested, here’s the full text of the remarks given at Brigham Young University on Friday by Charles Chaput, Roman Catholic archbishop of Philadelphia.  They’re entitled “The Great Charter at 800″:   http://www.firstthings.com/web-exclus...   I agree with what Archbishop Chaput had to say, and found his presentation quite engaging.   [Read More...]
