“Rethinking materialism in science”

This week’s installment of my continuing assault on rationality and human kindness has appeared in the Deseret News:   http://www.deseretnews.com/article/86...

Washington Post: “Mitt Romney still has a Mormon problem”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/t...   I think, regrettably, that there’s a great deal of truth in this.

Disarming fools

“I’m all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let’s start with typewriters.” Frank Lloyd Wright (1868-1959)   Of course, today, we would need to get computers out of such hands.  But fools are all over the internet.  They infest newspaper comments sections.  And, as has been pointed [Read More...]

Glenn Beck offers to help tutor Pope Francis

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/...   I actually think that Glenn Beck may be on to something here (about the Pope’s background in Latin America and how it’s formed him).  And I would love to include the Pope in a tutorial about the benefits — for the poor and the middle class, as well as for the [Read More...]

New Testament 54

Matthew 5:17-20 Compare Mark 13:31; Luke 16:16-17   There are those, particularly among Evangelical Protestants, who sometimes seem (to me, at least) to come perilously close to teaching an antinomian view of Jesus — one for which rules of conduct are, in a sense, irrelevant.   Today’s reading provides little support for such [Read More...]

Charles Hard Townes

Charles H. Townes, who won the 1964 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the laser, died yesterday at the age of 99.   I wrote about Professor Townes a few months ago:   http://www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeter...   He was not only a superb physicist but a vocally believing Christian.  “Impossible!” some will cry. “Gun range’s ban on Muslims draws fire”

This seems relevant in view of my post, earlier today, regarding the LDS Church endorsement of anti-discrimination laws in Utah:   http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/01/28/...   My personal position would be that, although I doubt that this gun range owner’s position will survive legal challenge, I think she ought to have the right to refuse service [Read More...]

Providing blankets for Syrian refugees

I doubt that most Latter-day Saints are keenly aware of the work that their church and their fellow Mormons are doing around the world.  Here’s a story from nearly a year ago, now:   http://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/huma...   I’m pleased beyond expression when I learn of things such as this.

The greatest service to humankind?

“Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to the country and to mankind is to bring up a family. But here again, because there is nothing to sell, there is a very general disposition to regard a married woman’s work as no work at all, and to take it [Read More...]
