Lyndi Lamont on Our Continuing Fascination with Pirates
Please welcome Lyndi Lamont to the blog!
Pirate Rules
What accounts for our fascination with pirates?
I’m talking about the 16th & 17th century variety. Is it the clothing? Knee boots and tight breeches and the white shirts with billowing sleeves. Or is the swagger of a man with a sword in his belt and an earring dangling from one ear? Or is the freedom of the open seas and not having to bow to any laws?
There are many myths and misconceptions about pirates, and one is that there were no rules. While it’s true that pirates were outlaws who flaunted the laws of many different nations, pirate culture had its own set of rules and a form of crude democracy. The pirate captain was elected by the crew and could be replaced at any time, except during battle. Ships sometimes drew up articles, a code of conduct by which the crew agreed to abide. The articles addressed things like how spoils were divided, compensation for injured men, and punishment for fractions of the rules.
Punishment was swift and harsh. Striking another crewman or lighting a pipe of candle in the hold might earn a pirate “Moses’s law”, 40 Stripes lacking one, or thirty-nine lashes of the whip. The worst punishments were reserved for desertion, theft and keeping secrets from the rest of the crew. These brought a sentence of death or marooning, which was a delayed death. Being marooned meant being left on a sandy island with a bit of food and water, and a loaded pistol so he could commit suicide. The islands were often little more than a sandbar at low tide. The marooning of Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe to write Robinson Crusoe.
Captured prizes were divided among the members of the crew equally, except for the captain, and other designated crewmen, usually including the quartermaster, the sailing master, the boatswain and gunner.
Here are the articles used by the pirate captain John Phillips and his crew from 1724:
#1. Every Man shall obey civil Command; the Captain shall have one full Share and a half in all Prizes; the Master, Carpenter, Boatswain and Gunner shall have one Share and a quarter.
#2. If any Man shall offer to run away, or keep any Secret from the Company, he shall be marroon’d with one Bottle of Powder, one Bottle of Water, one small Arm, and Shot.
#3. If any Man shall steal any Thing in the Company, or game, to the Value of a Piece of Eight, he shall be Marroon’d or Shot.
#4. If at any Time we should meet another Marrooner (that is, Pyrate,) that Man shall sign his Articles without the consent of our Company, shall suffer such Punishment as the Captain and Company shall think fit.
#5. That Man that shall strike another while these Articles are in force, shall receive Moses’s Law (that is 40 Stripes lacking one) on the bare Back.
#6. That Man that shall snap his Arms, or smoak Tobacco in the Hold, without a cap to his Pipe, or carry a Candle lighted without a Lanthorn, shall suffer the same Punishment as in the former Article.
#7. That Man that shall not keep his Arms clean, fit for an Engagement, or neglect his Business, shall be cut off from his Share, and suffer such other Punishment as the Captain and the Company shall think fit.
#8. If any Man shall lose a Joint in time of an Engagement, shall have 400 Pieces of Eight; if a limb, 800.
#9. If at any time you meet with a prudent Woman, that Man that offers to meddle with her, without her Consent, shall suffer present Death.
Many of these pirate rules played a part in the plot of my steamy pirate romance, Marooned, and were loads of fun to research. You can read more here.
My thanks to Julie Kenner for hosting me today. So, what do you think accounts for the fascination with pirates of the old-fashioned, swashbuckling variety?
Marooned by Lyndi Lamont (Steamy Pirate Romance)
Heather Parnell is traveling from England to her home in Jamaica with her new husband, Roger, a man she detests. She performs a banishing spell with unintended consequences. When their ship is attacked by pirates, Roger is killed. Heather, disguised as a boy, joins the pirate crew.
Pirate captain Adam Langworth suspects there is something odd about the new lad. When he discovers she is a woman, she begs him to keep her secret, a violation of the ships’ articles. When her identity is discovered, Adam and Heather find themselves marooned on a deserted island with nothing to do for the rest of their lives but make love.
Disclaimer: This is a 12,000 word steamy romantic short story, not a full-length novel. Previously published by Amber Quill Press. Contains a sexy pirate, a naughty witch, cussing and fornicating.

Lots of heat on #MostWantedMonday – a new snippet of Wanted by J. Kenner
Here’s a new #MostWantedMonday excerpt as we countdown to the January 7 release of Wanted by J. Kenner, book one in the Most Wanted series of erotic romances that wilI be followed by Heated in May and Ignited in September!
I hope you enjoy this week’s snippet!
“I swear to god, Angie, you’re like Kryptonite—you fucking break me.” He pulled back, moving his hands to either side of my head, his fingers twining through my hair as he held me just a little too tight, keeping me completely locked in his grasp.
I was breathing hard, my body primed. My lips parted ever so slightly and I tried to lean in, drawn like a magnet to the energy of this man. He held me fast, though, and I knew in that moment that whatever edge I thought I held over Evan Black was a tenuous thing. He could turn the tables on me whenever he wanted to. Hell yes he was dangerous. And right then, he was mine.
“I’ve done a lot of fucked up shit,” he said. “But this—right here, right now—this may be the worst.”
I tried to shake my head, but he still held firm. “I don’t believe that,” I said.
“I do.” He slid one hand around to cup the back of my head, keeping me steady as the thumb of his other finger brushed gently over my lower lip. Automatically, I opened my mouth, my breath coming in soft, shuddering gasps even as a shiver ran through my entire body. There was no hiding anything from him now, and I didn’t want to. The air between us was thick with heat and lust, and though I stood fully clothed in front of him, I’d never felt more exposed in my life than I did in that moment.

MJ Fredrick On Her Love for Post-apocalyptic Entertainment
Please welcome MJ Fredrick to the blog!
My husband and I LOVE entertainment with post-apocalyptic themes. I think the first book we both fell in love with in the genre was The Stand, which remains my favorite Stephen King book. Good vs. Evil, man vs. man, though there are supernatural elements at play.
We’re mad fans of The Walking Dead, both the graphic novels and the show. We recently re-watched World War Z, which I understand is WAY different from the book, but was still so good.
My husband just finished playing a video game called The Last of Us, which was really interesting, because it was a lot like a movie. Sure, you make some decisions, but all of them lead you down a particular path.
What was particularly interesting in this game was that while there were zombies, they didn’t seem to be the biggest threat. The biggest threat was what other humans would do to survive. This game is dark, y’all. My husband had days where he could only play it for a few minutes because it was so intense. It really made you ask yourself what you’d do in those situations.
We loved the show Jericho, again with the man vs man theme, and the movie Independence Day, though that was more about bringing people together.
I love Hunger Games, and even more? The Life As We Knew It series by Susan Beth Pfeffer. That book is in my head YEARS after I read it. It’s about the moon being struck by an asteroid and knocked out of orbit, and the effects on Earth, all from the POV of one girl (first book) and one boy (second book.) I’ve not read the third yet, and I understand there’s a fourth. Really great story, though.
I had all these things in my head when I was writing Eden’s Promise, my first post-apocalyptic book set after a terrorist attack knocks out the infrastructure. I wanted to keep the man vs man theme, so there are no paranormal elements, just a study of how I think certain people would act in certain situations.
My heroine is Eden, who lives on an island off the northwest coast and whose father is a doomsday prepper, something she’s grateful for when the worst happens. But what he does to protect his supplies bothers her. But when she travels to the mainland in search of her sister, she knows why he’s done what he’s done.
What about you? Do you like post-apocalyptic stories? Do you like the ones with supernatural elements, or not? What’s your favorite post-apoc book, movie or show?
The world has gone to hell after a terrorist attack sends the world back to nineteenth century technology. But on an island off the coast of Oregon, Eden McKay’s small town is safe and sound. But when Eden’s ill mother wants to see her other daughter before she dies, Eden must leave the safety of her home to find the sister she hasn’t seen in four years.
The only one to help her is Aaron Jenkins, the Navy SEAL who’s just made his way to the island after months of fighting his way across the mainland. After what he’s seen on the mainland, all he wants is the peace of his family’s home. He doesn’t want responsibility for himself, much less another person. But he can’t let Eden go on her own. She’s determined, but she’ll never survive on her own.
Together they set off for the mainland, where wild dogs and mercenaries are the least of their problems, where they have to fight a mad man and search for a needle in a haystack, where the danger is not just to their well-being, but to their hearts.
MJ Fredrick knows about chasing dreams. Twelve years after she completed her first novel, she signed her first publishing contract. Now she divides her days between teaching elementary music, and diving into her own writing–traveling everywhere in her mind, from Belize to Honduras to Africa to the past.
She’s a four-time Golden Heart Award finalist, and she won the 2009 Eppie Award with Hot Shot and the 2010 Eppie with Breaking Daylight.
You can find her online (most of the time, actually) on her blog, on Facebook, on Twitter, and even at Pinterest.
A big thanks to MJ Fredrick for guest blogging today!
Don’t forget MJ’s question: What is your favorite post-apocolyptic book, movie, or TV show? Share your thoughts in the comments!

An emotional moment on #MostWantedMonday – Wanted by J. Kenner
Here’s a new #MostWantedMonday excerpt as we countdown to the January 7 release of Wanted by J. Kenner, book one in the Most Wanted series of erotic romances that wilI be followed by Heated in May and Ignited in September!
I hope you enjoy this week’s snippet!
“Evan.” My voice was barely a whisper, as if volume might push him out the door. “We both want it. I do, and I know you do, too.”
He stood up, then turned to look at me. I dragged the covers up to my neck, needing to keep at least part of me hidden. I’d already exposed too much of myself to him.
“Don’t you?” I pleaded when he said nothing. My voice was laced with a note of insecurity, and I hated myself for it. I watched the expressions shift across his face like clouds upon the wind, and fear slashed through me. “You’re not seriously going to stand there and tell me I’m wrong? I felt it, Evan. I felt you.”
His expression was flat, but his eyes were like a storm when they met mine. “I have done and will do a lot of things that you probably find reprehensible. But I will never, never, lie to you.”
I shook my head, confused and wary.
“Last night was a mistake,” he said, and with that single word, I understood everything. Whatever he’d seen in me—whatever he’d wanted—I’d managed to destroy it. I was dragonbait—some weak female who needed rescuing. But it wasn’t a princess that Evan Black wanted. It never had been.
“A mistake,” I repeated dully. I thought of the way I’d felt in his arms. The way I’d slept through the night. The way I’d felt whole for the first time in a very long time.
Yeah, maybe that was a mistake. Because he’d given me peace—and I damn sure didn’t deserve it.

Sizzling new snippet on #MostWantedMonday – Wanted by J. Kenner
Welcome to an all new #MostWantedMonday as we countdown to the January 7 release of Wanted by J. Kenner, book one in the Most Wanted series of erotic romances that wilI be followed by Heated in May and Ignited in September!
I hope you enjoy this week’s sexy new snippet!
I looked at his face and I knew without a doubt that I could fall with Evan. If he would make the jump with me, I was absolutely certain that he wouldn’t let me get hurt. He’d said it himself—he knew how to keep control. And I so desperately wanted to let go of it.
“Evan.” That one soft word was like taking a match to dynamite, and I saw the fire ignite inside him.
“Jesus, Angie.” His arm snaked around my waist and he pulled me close. I pressed against him, so hot with need it’s a wonder I wasn’t reduced to ashes. I felt the hard length of his erection against my thigh and thought I might cry, simply from the knowledge that he was as desperate for me as I was for him.
I’d truly never felt anything like this. As if each vein, each hair, each atom inside me existed for no purpose other than to spread pleasure through me. So much pleasure that I wasn’t sure I could withstand the force of it. This was everything I’d wanted. Everything I’d imagined I would feel when Evan finally touched me. But it was so fast and so hard and so overwhelming that I was on the verge of exploding.
Either that or stripping off my clothes and pulling him down to the floor right then and there.
And that probably wasn’t the most prudent of plans.
Breathing hard, I backed away, increasing the space between our bodies. I saw the question on his face, the dark disapproval at our broken connection, and before that could shift to regret, or prudence or responsibility, I moved back to him, pressing my body against his torso and my hands over his ass. For the first time, it registered with me that he’d changed clothes. The tuxedo was gone. The man in front of me wore simple Levis and an even simpler white t-shirt that exposed the vine tattoo that encircled his upper arm.
He looked young and hot and completely fuckable, and once again I was blown away by the fact that he was here. With me. A very literal fantasy come true.
