Telephone conversation

Wayne and I had an interesting telephone conversation yesterday morning.  I was getting ready to leave for church and planned to stop by the hospital on the way home.

“Hi, Sweetheart.  On my way to the hospital. Would you like me to pick you up a Whopper?”

“No thanks.  The woman who gives me Physical Therapy is getting me one.”

Ah, so Wayne had been flirting again.  “Is she paying for it herself?”

“Of course not. The insurance is covering it.”

“Our insurance company is paying for a hamburger?”

Wayne hesitated and then blurted out, “Good grief, no!  They’re paying for a walker.”

Writing Friends

[image error]These are my fun writer friends in Florida.  We meet at least once a year and have the best time.  Martha Powers is next to me, then Roxanne St. Claire and then Rachel Hauck.  I love them all dearly.

Modern Medicine

Wayne has been telling me for years that wine is good for us.  That it’s medicinal.  Apparently he’s right.  The hospital is allowing him two glasses of wine with his dinner, and get this—it has to be ordered through the hospital pharmacy.  He’s loving the fact he’s right—about this, at least!

A New Member of the "New Knee Club"

My dear hubby has been suffering with bad knees for the last few years.  Today he went into the hospital for total knee replacement.  Because he’s been so healthy Wayne hasn’t needed major surgery since the time he was a kid, and, while he didn’t want it to show, I could see he was a bit concerned.  Before we left for the hospital he assured me the life insurance policy was paid up and gave me last minute instructions.  Now I was the one getting a bit concerned!  We were up at 3 a.m. and at the hospital by 5 a.m.  Surgery was at 7 a.m., and he was in his room before 10 a.m.  As I was walking down the corridor to join him, I could hear giggles and laughter ahead.  It was Wayne.  He was flirting with the nurses. The second knee is scheduled for Friday.  He’s going to be just fine.

New Orleans and the Super Bowl

Having recently returned from New Orleans and the Big Game, I can tell you that city is one huge party town.  And what a party it was!  My daughter, Jody, attended with me and our son, Ted, was with his friend, Carl.  The four of us walked to the game (I had 15,000 steps on my pedometer, my highest ever!) wearing our Seahawk jerseys.  We ran into several other Seahawk fans, who all claimed it would be Seattle’s year in 2014.  We shall see.  The game wasn’t without excitement.  Probably most memorable for us was the 35 minute break in the game because of a power outage and the walk back to our hotel with those celebrating and those in need of consolation.

Walking with the dog

Bogie and I have been walking just after dawn every morning.  The air isn’t as heavy with humidity, and it feels good to breathe in the freshness and beauty of life here in Florida.  Bogie is getting better about walking, too.  When we first started out he found it necessary to sniff every blade of grass, checking for territorial markings and leaving his own.  For such a small dog, he has an amazingly large bladder.  Since we’ve gotten into this routine, Bogie will now walk as far as three feet without pausing.  This, my friends, is progress.

Word for the Year

To the best of my knowledge my husband has put to memory only one verse from the entire Bible.  It’s in Ephesians and in part says:  Wives submit to your husbands . . .

I’ve mentioned my struggle to find my word for this year. Friends, when God sends me a word it isn’t one I’ve chosen, it’s one He’s led me to and yes, my word for 2013 is submit.  It came to me over the weekend and I felt like I got conked over the head with it.  You can imagine how excited Wayne was—he’s been wearing the biggest grin ever since.

Our favorite team

By now almost everyone must know we are a football family. Since we live near Seattle, we are naturally huge Seahawk fans. Seeing how well the Seahawks played in the wild card game against the Redskins on Sunday—well, other than the first ten minutes—we are thrilled to see them advance in the playoffs.  (With prayers going for RG3.)  Notice the game was played on January 6, when Christians celebrate the feast of the Epiphany (which is when the kings delivered their gifts to the baby Jesus).  We feel like we got a special gift this year from our favorite team.

Word for the Year

I'm on a search for my word for the year.  My word for 2012 was magnify, and that came to me early.  It sometimes happens that way, and in other years it will be mid-January or longer before I settle on my word.  Friends and readers are offering suggestions, and while I appreciate everyone's effort, my word has to come from God.  My son offered the best idea to date.  The 2013 word for the year that he put forth: Seahawks.  Come to think of it, that's not such a bad idea.  Go Hawks!

Christmas Party

I took my staff out to dinner last night to celebrate Christmas and another

great year of working together. Renate, my administrative assistant, has

been with me the longest at eighteen years, and Katie, the most recent hire,

came on board in September. There are eight in all, which sort of boggles

my mind when I think back to the days with that rented manual typewriter on

the kitchen table.

We had a fun evening. This was our first dinner together--in the past it was

always an office lunch. I learned something new about my team. They are

party animals. Katie started it all by ordering a cocktail called the

Pretty Virgin, and then Renate jumped in with a drink called Woo-Woo, and it

didn't take long for Doris to decide she wanted one, too. Before I knew it

someone was asking about Jell-O shots. That someone would be me. To

demonstrate what a great staff I have, everyone showed up at the office this

morning on time. Okay, I was a few minutes late, but it was due to traffic.
