GLAAD has released its annual Studio Responsibility Index, a measure of LGBT inclusivity in movies. The results were disappointing: Only 17.5% of films from major studios included LGBT characters, and their portrayals were less diverse and less significant: Of the movies with LGBT characters, 77% featured gay men and23% featured lesbians. Only9% featured bisexual people and 5% featured transgender people.
Only 25.5% of the LGBT characters were people of color. GLAAD uses the“Vito R...

“We form relationships with some of the books we read, but when does that connection actually start? For me, more often than not, it can begin before I even read the first chapter. Transgender students across Oregon should be able to use the bathrooms, names and pronouns they want, according to unprecedented guidelines released Thursday by the Oregon Department of Education.

(via What Makes a Great First Chapter? (comparison of 5 first chapters))

I love starting a new book; there’s something about beginning a new journey that invigorates me. When it comes to choosing the next victor from my towering TBR stack, a great first chapter will always win out. I selected five contestants and read the beginning of each to bring you some tips about what makes or breaks a first chapter. And because they influenced my opinion, I’ve mentioned the judgements I h...

My mom is one of the bravest and smartest people I know. At 23 she left a war torn country in a small fishing boat, helped raise her sister and nephew, survived a pirate attack and built a new life. Also I was a nightmare child, so there’s that too. #lotsoflove #happymothersday http://ift.tt/24ENdH9
