Knowing Your Characters

fictionwritingtips:

Martin probably know everything about their characters and their backstories because they HAVE TO. COMING THIS FALL:
Flying Without a Net, by E.M. Ben Shaul

Dani Perez, a secular Israeli working as a software engineer in Boston, has never had trouble balancing his faith and his sexuality—until he meets Avi Levine, a gay Orthodox Jew and sign language interpreter. “Make up a story… For our sake and yours forget your name in the street; tell us what the world has been to you in the dark places and in the light. Don’t tell us what to believe, what to fear. Show us belief’s wide skirt and the stitch that unravels fear’s caul.”

Writing Short Women

rhube:

I’m a short woman. I mostly prefer reading about tall women, because the way short women are described invariably bothers me.

I don’t want to be described as ‘fiesty’ or ‘spunky’ - why are so many of my adjectives ending in a ‘y’, even when they’re meant to mean I’m fierce, intimidating, forthright, spirited? Stop making even my adjectives diminutive.

And the alternatives to words like ‘fiesty’ and ‘spunky’ are ‘adorable’, ‘cute’, ‘sweet’, ‘tiny’. Some women want to feel adorable and...
