If I get frustrated with a book I'm writing, I start writing obscure and outlandish short stories completely off topic. In these stories, I'm not limited by anything that's come before or any predetermined destination. The freedom to freestyle helps break down any walls I've built around myself. Once I'm broken free from the restraints, my frustrations ease and I can get back into the book I really should be writing. The writer's block part is that I sometimes get so involved in the short stories that over a weekend I might write three in a series. I have to force myself stop.(less)

I love having the ability to create an entire world from scratch.

When we are kids, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and science kits can mesmerize us for entire days. As adults, we often lose the ability to pretend and lose ourselves in mindless fun. Writing allows me to daydream and play and actually have something to show for it.

My favorite part of the writing process is when I read back over something I've written and can't believe I actually wrote it.(less)
