They might have made it all the way to the summit of the pass
the next day, except the weather turned on them. Katashan watched the storm rushing over the
mountain top and down at their party, and he could do no more than summon a
feeling of annoyed resignation. He

Flash Friday # 24: The Earring
Earring
By
Lazette Gifford
I found my mother's lost earring
in the car two days after I got back home.
We had spent almost all of the
sweltering Sunday afternoon looking for it, tearing through the front seat and
the back (though she had not gone anywhere near that area). I had suffered in obedient, daughterly
silence all the while my mother shook her head, made disparaging sounds

The room smelled of food.
He wanted to taste some, even though he hadn't the strength even to
swallow. Light came from somewhere. Soft blankets. Safe.

Katashan realized he must have fainted. Cork carried him, tossed over the guard's

Flash Friday # 23: A Winterfest Tale
A Winterfest Tale
(Many years ago (2001, I believe), Holly Lisle put a story start up on Forward Motion and those of us taking part finished it. This is my version. Holly's start is indicated in bold . I have, however, changed the entire story from a present tense to past tense. I hope you enjoy it.)
Snow fell in the heart of the forest, burying the trees, burying the ground,

Cork led him down the right side path and to an otherwise empty
tavern where a single man stood behind a bar made of drift wood and more
stone. Huge shells were hung from nets
along the walls, and a stuffed shark stood sentinel over the bar. Strange place, Katashan thought.
He wanted to go back to the temple and pray. Or maybe not.

The shutters rattled with a force stronger than the breeze,
waking Katashan with a start. A pale,
moon-white light flickered at the window and a soft keening voice rose on the
growing wind.
Katashan sat up and pulled the warm blanket up around him,
frowning at the play of

Flash Friday #22: the end of the world ...
This is a change from my previous posts. I wrote this poem years ago, but it fits this auspicious end-of-the-world day, so I thought I'd post it. People who are familair with archy and mehitbel will recognize the homage.

Forward Motion, Old and New
Back in October, the Forward Motion for Writers site went through a drastic change as our older program could no longer meet modern security standards. It's a shame, really -- the site may have seemed clunky to some, but I was fond of it. The new one still seems to bland to me. I know that eventually we'll get it spruced up a bit, but there just hasn't been time. I think that will have to be
