Stranded ... Famous Edition

I'm so excited!!  Y'all may remember last month that I linked up with Shay and Erika's link up "stranded" and shared three netflix series I would take to a deserted island. Each month there is a different topic and today, we're blogging about what three famous people we would take with us if we were stranded on a deserted island.

If you want to see my previous "Stranded Posts" you can find them here:
Stranded with Medicine Cabinet Items
Stranded with 3 books
Stranded with Netflix

Let me be clear. I really have no justification as far as "survival skills" in choosing these three women. I chose them because I admire the way that they are using their positions of to help bring advocacy for a number of issues and basically would love to spend time with them. *hahaha* I am obviously imagining this "stranded" experience to be a day at the beach with all of my basic necessities met (like one of my favorites, Coco Cay *smiles*) Hahaha. So with that in mind... here are the 3 people I would love to have on the deserted island with me:

(1) Duchess of Cambridge
If you have been around this blog or know me at all I am pretty sure that you could have guessed that Kate Middleton would make this list. *smiles* (I know, I know, it is shocking that Harry didn't make the cut. *smiles*) Seriously though, how awesome would it be to spend some time with Kate?
(2) Queen Rania of Jordan
I had the opportunity to hear Queen Rania speak a number of years ago and was incredibly impressed with her work to bring humanitarian aid and women's rights into the Middle East. Queen Rania is known not only for being an avid user of social media, but for her efforts and advocacy work related to education, community empowerment, micro-finance, cross-cultural discussions and health related issues.

(3)Angelina Jolie
I know, I am surprised that I am listing her also in a way. I don't like any of her movies, and yet recently someone was sharing with me everything that Angelina has done in humanitarian work and I was shocked and inspired. She has been to countless field missions in some of the most remote countries in the world. She has contributed millions of dollars and is on a number of charities, the list is literally endless. Absolutely inspiring.

So these are my three famous people I am bringing if I'm stranded on a deserted island! Who would you love to see on your deserted island if you were stranded?  I'd love to know your thoughts!!  Comment below (or link up!) and share this with us!
And to see the other topics for the rest of the year:

Happy Wednesday friends!

Muir Woods, California

"This is the best tree-lover's monument that could possibly be found in all of the forests in the world."-John Muir- Several weeks ago I posted on my Instagram Feed that we had the opportunity to spend a couple of lovely hours in the beautiful Muir Woods when we were in California. It was absolutely stunning and one of my favorite places that I have ever visited. Muir Woods is a unit of the National Park Service, on Mount Tamalpais approximately 12 miles north of San Francisco. It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is near the Pacific Coast.  Muir Woods has a fascinating history that spans many decades and many people who cared enough to preserve this beautiful area of the United States. Before the logging industry affected California there was an estimated amount of a couple of million acres of redwoods that existed. After the logging industry came to California that acreage had been primarily cut down.  But there was one section, just north of San Francisco that remained untouched. This valley was named "Redwood Canyon" and remained protected simply because it was difficult to access for the logging companies. US Congressman William Kent noticed that there was great interest in this area of California and he and his wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, decided to purchase 611 acres of land that was then owned by the Tamalpais Land and Water Company. The couple paid $45,000 with the simple goal of protected the redwoods that lived there and the mountain.  In 1907, a water company (from Sausalito) decided that they would dam Redwood Creek, which would in turn flood the valley and harm the Redwood Forest. US Congressman Kent objected the plan, but the water company took him to court, citing useeminent domain (basically stating that they had the right to move forward with their project).  US Congressman Kent, who was known to be a brilliant thinker in politics, sidestepped the water company's plot by donating almost 300 acres of the Redwood Forest to the Federal Government. In doing so, he was able to side-step the local courts thus invalidating the water company's court case. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt declared the area of land that had been donated a National Monument. This was of great significance at the time as this was the first to be created from land donated by a private individual.   The original name of the monument was to be the Kent Monument in honor of US Congressman Kent and his wife Elizabeth, but the couple insisted that the monument not be named after them. Instead they suggested that the monument be named after John Muir whose environmental campaigns helped to bring about what is now known as the National Park System.  In 1928 the Kent Memorial was placed in the park. This memorial- a Douglas fir- not a redwood ironically was chosen because it was said to be US Congressman Kent's favorite. The tree remained and grew until it finally came down in 2003 damaging several other trees in its vicinity and closing several trails for months. The park was visited frequently but did not see the number of visitors that it does today until after the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. Muir Woods is now one of the major tourist attractions of the San Francisco Bay Area with almost a million visitors per year. Visiting Muir Woods is a definite must if you love nature and trees. As John Muir said so many years ago it is definitely a tree-lover's paradise.  There are so many options for what you can see in the park and there are many different trails that you can take. If you have a disability or just want to take a slower walk, taking in the beautiful views the main trail is concrete and can be easily walked. If you are wanting to do more adventurous hiking or come with the family to explore there are plenty of different trails that take you to several different look out locations, including one where you can see the Pacific Ocean.
One of my dreams at Muir Woods was to see the famous Cathedral Grove. Cathedral Grove is simply breath-taking. Visitors grow very quiet as you are overcome with the vastness of the trees and how little you are compared to those trees. It was absolutely gorgeous. Cathedral Grove in Muir Woods is a sacred and holy space that can truly only be experienced fully by going. It is an easy 3/4 of a mile hike from the entrance and I can't express enough how stunning it was. In 2008 Cathedral Grove was added to the National Register of Historic Places in honor of President Franklin Roosevelt. President Roosevelt, or "FDR" was to have opened a conference for the United Nations Conference on International Organization for which delegates from more than 50 countries were to meet to draft and sign the United Nations Charter.  Unfortunately, FDR died in April 1945 and never saw this dream of his come true. In May 1945 the delegates held a private ceremony to pay tribute to his memory and a dedication plaque was placed in his honor there.  To stand in a place of such rich history, of so many people who across the decades fought to preserve these beautiful trees was humbling. If you ever get a chance to spend some time in Muir Woods I highly recommend it. You will not regret your time there. Have y'all ever visited Muir Woods?

Lack of Understanding in the Single Journey

picture found on Grace Engaged, altered by Caravan Sonnet“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts….”-Proverbs 12:18-
One of the real aspects of walking in the single journey is dealing with a lack of understanding for this season of life. The heart break of when nasty or insensitive words are spoken show a lack of understanding. I truly believe that at the core people are not trying to be mean or hurtful, but unfortunately comments about "why are you so picky?" or "its just not the right timing" or when people try to jokingly comment on an aspect of singleness, or simply when they are trying to say something "helpful" can hurt the tender heart of a single.

I never knew until walking this single journey how much, "death and life are in the power of the tongue..." (Proverbs 18:21) Words that are all too common speak “death” and not “life” to this season. This past year I was the recipient of some extremely hurtful words that I can only imagine were intended to hurt and destroy.

It can be easy to grow bitter and have our hearts be hardened by these comments, but friends, let me encourage you to forgive those who have hurt you with their words. Let us ask the Lord to help us forgive and move forward in grace. (If you are struggling with forgiveness I strongly encourage you to read the post, "Forgiveness in the Single Journey" that I wrote last year. You can find it HERE.)

Let us ask the Lord to put a shield around us to protect our hearts from careless words. “But thou Oh Lord are a shield around me…” (Psalm 3:3) As I pray for this, I not only find my heart is free to love, free to live in the hope of the Lord, but also free to extend grace.

I am also convicted of my own careless words. My words that I speak that unintentionally hurt those who are struggling in seasons of difficulty. It may not be a season of waiting for a husband that they are struggling with, but no matter the struggle, I want my words to be seasoned with grace. I ask the Lord to help me to remember that my own words have the power of life and death to others and their situations that I don’t fully understand or haven’t experienced.

One of my prayers these past couple of years has been: "Lord, teach me to not speak death over my situation or another’s situation. Lord, teach me to choose life with my words everyday- in regards to my singleness and hope for a husband and my future. Lord, help me to speak life words every single time when I am speaking to others."

A verse that I have written many times in my journal and that is up around my home is from Deuteronomy 30:19. It states: “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses...Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” (Deuteronomy 30:19) Seeing this verse reminds me that I want to choose life in all situations. It reminds me of the power of speaking what “is good for building up, as fits the occasion” (Ephesians 4:29).

God is a God of life and my pray is that my heart would overflow and speak this truth. My dear friends- hold onto the hope and truth that the Lord understands our hurting hearts when careless words are spoken. He understands our heartache over the lack of understanding that we sometimes experience. He understands the times we weep throughout this journey. God is always with us friends... let the prayers of our hearts be to have greater compassion for those walking through difficult situations and that our own words would bring life to each situation we encounter.

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
-Psalm 19:14-

Tanzania Altered Country Travel Journal and Small Altered Journal Combo

Happy Saturday sweet friends! I hope that you are having a lovely weekend!
I am so excited to share with y'all today a custom order from a couple of months ago! This Tanzania Country Journal and Small Altered Journal were a delight to create!
As I have mentioned before here on the blog, some of my favorite items to create in the shop are the "altered travel journals". There are different options available including, the altered city travel journal, the altered state travel journal, the  altered country travel journal,  the altered 1,000 Places to See Before you Die Altered travel journal, and the most recent additions to the shop are the altered city travel journal and small altered travel journal combo, altered state travel journal and small altered travel journal, and altered country travel journal and small altered travel journal combo!
This custom order was from Jessica who wanted me to create an altered country travel journal for a trip that she and her husband were taking to Tanzania.  It was such a special trip for them as they were celebrating their 10 year anniversary and they had also included her father who was turning 70 this year. As we chatted about the trip I learned that Jessica had grown up spending her summers in Africa and that this was going to be a truly memorable trip for all three of them. Jessica was so lovely to work with. She was extremely sweet and knew the type of details that she wanted to see in her order.
Jessica wanted to see the colors of teals, blues, greens, yellows, and blacks. She also was specific about some details that she wanted to see in the journal, including places that they would be staying and visiting.
This order was such a blessing and I was THRILLED with the final results!! I loved the different colored tones that all came together for these journals! Thank you so much for the opportunity to create this for you Jessica! If you are interested in a altered journal or a custom order feel free to check out my shop or email me for details!
Happy Saturday friends! I hope you have a wonderful day and weekend!

Top 13 Must Pack Items for a Caribbean Cruise

Cruises to the Caribbean aren't like packing for cruising to cooler weather climates like New England or Canada. So when it comes to packing for my upcoming cruises (I am so excited to be collaborating and working with Disney in September and Royal Caribbean in November!!) to the Caribbean I have struggled to decide what should end up in my luggage. I have been to the Caribbean once in February 2014 and as it was my first cruise, it was a ton of fun but it was such a whirlwind that I am so looking forward to going back to experience the Caribbean in a totally new way.

My last cruise (this past September) was to New England and Canada and so my suitcase was filled with lots of layers, scarves, boots, and cuddly warm weather outfits. If you are going on a cruise to a cooler climate you may find my post, Top 10 Must Pack Items for a New England and Canada Cruise helpful. You can find it HERE!
So as I searched for what to pack for this type of cruising climate and I struggled to find answers. There were tons of ideas for basic things to pack, but not specific tips from people who have been here before. So I searched and talked with people who have cruised to the Caribbean often, talked with Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, and searched tons of travel sites for their thoughts on visiting this area of the world. The reality is that the Caribbean is gorgeous no matter what time of year you go to visit and brings warm tropical weather in the day and cooler breezes in the evening. A perfect combination for a relaxing getaway! So here are the top 10 things that you can't leave home without y'all:
1. Different Bathing Suit OptionsIf you plan to spend time simply sun bathing than you probably don't care what type of bathing suit you are choosing, but if you plan to participate in a shore excursion that involves a sporty activity you will want to consider carefully your bathing suit. Since you will spend so much time in swimwear on the cruise, throw in a couple of different options. 2. Cute and Comfy Sandals and ShoesY'all know that I love sandals and would wear them every day of the year if I had the opportunity so the Caribbean weather is the perfect time for packing cute sandals. Don't forget to pack Sandals and shoes that are also comfy though. You will be surprised at how much walking you do on the ship and at the ports for different excursions. As a gal who loves shoes it is the perfect opportunity to pack a couple of different pairs. *smiles* 3. Caribbean Inspired ClothesOne of the most fun parts of a Caribbean Cruise is having the opportunity to dress up in cute sundresses, flowing maxi skirts, and sweet tops. Think through what you will be doing on your cruise and plan out some fun outfits for your trip that match your destination.  4. Widebrim Oversized SunhatThere are so many adorable different hats that can be worn during the summer months and also on a Caribbean Cruise. My favorite hats come from Joules (as seen on me in the picture above) and Nordstrom as they have lots of different options. A tip that a friend gave me was to purchase an elastic fastener that works like a two-sided clothespin. Attach one end to your hat and the other to your shirt- this is a perfect way to keep your hat on your head instead of over the boat! *smiles*
5. SunglassesDon't forget to bring a pair (or two!) of sunglasses for your trip!
image found on internet6. Snorkel and MaskIf you love to swim and snorkel (or even scuba dive) consider bringing your own equipment. Rental masks not only cost a lot of money, but they often fit poorly which allows water to come in or your mask to fog up. While snorkels are "one size fits all", if you are a bit of a germ freak like me, you might feel a little disconcerted by how many people have used the snorkel before you. (Ewww....) Throw in your own snorkel and mask and you will be happy you did!
7. SunscreenThis is obviously a "must pack" item for a Caribbean Cruise, and yet so many people forget to throw it into their suitcase. It is extremely easy to get sunburned in the Caribbean so don't forget to throw this in. You will be saving money by bringing your own sunscreen as Cruise ships charge a premium for this essential item. Traveling with a large group or going on a long cruise? Consider taking some travel-size options with you so that you don't have to carry around a huge bottle. And don't forget to toss in a lip balm for your lips!

8. Aloe VeraEven with sunscreen, the warm climate of the Caribbean can make it easy to get sunburned. Consider taking along some soothing aloe vera with you for your skin. My favorite brand is the Aubrey Organics. It is incredible light and at only 4 oz. it is easy to throw into your suitcase without adding a ton of extra weight. I use this often on my skin, even when I don't have a burn after being out in the sun and it is extremely soothing.
9. Camera (and the Extras)Although I technically have been to several of the ports that we will be stopping at I can't wait to experience these cruises with my loved ones and the beautiful views that I am sure we will be met with. I have never traveled to the Caribbean in the fall and I am sure it will be stunning. But you know what? Its not just the experience. It is always who you are with and you don't want to miss out on remembering these special memories that you will make. Don't forget to bring all of the "extras" that you will also need like a spare battery, battery charger, extra chip, etc.
A great tip that a friend of mine shared with me the last time I went on a cruise was to charge my camera battery every night. This tip was invaluable as one day I accidentally forgot to turn off my camera in all of the fun we were having and would have missed out on some precious picture memories had I not done this!
ALSO because you are going to have opportunities to view beautiful islands with different corals, colorful fish, and lots of fun, you will likely want to document your experience with an underwater or waterproof camera. Don't want to spend a ton of money on an underwater camera? Consider grabbing a cheap disposable camera that can be taking with you while you swim or have an adventure parasailing or at the aqua adventure park in Atlantis!
10. Extension CordOkay, so this isn't a particular suggestion only for Caribbean cruises but can be for any cruise! This was a suggestion that someone gave to me on my first cruise and it was a lifesaver! Throw in an extension cord and you will be glad that you did!
joules bag11. Purse, Bag, Etc.Anyone that knows me knows that I love big purses and bags. They are honestly one of my favorite accessories. Taking a big purse and bag with me when I cruise is the perfect way for me to carry everything that I needed for our days off the ship (and adding a cute accessory). Some people like to use a backpack or some different type of item to carry their belongings in, but definitely remember to pack some type of bag. For me a large purse works perfectly as I can fit in everything I need to (including my camera and other things!) into it!
12. Journal, Travel Books, Etc. Y'all know from my shop that I love creating and altering travel books and journals so this recommendation is probably not a surprise at all! *smiles* Some people like to pack travel guides to take with them on the cruise so they can explore in depth the ports of call while others like to bring journals on board so as to remember the special details and memories that are made. With so many special memories that are made it can be hard to remember every detail and was so glad that I brought this along.
13. Cruise Documents and PassportDon't forget like any other cruise (that leaves the US) that you will need to bring all of your cruise documents and passport. Curious about what type of documentation that you need? Check out this page at Royal Caribbean on Requirements on Documentation
What about y'all? Any must pack items that you recommend for a Caribbean Cruise?

4 More Tips for Exploring Your Own City

Whenever I am planning a trip or getting ready to go see some place that I haven't yet seen, I am always excited to plan out trying new experiences in a new part of the world. As I am thinking and praying about an upcoming trip to a state I have never been to at the end of this month for one of my dearest friends weddings, I started to explore and try to learn more about this state. I was thinking about this and thinking more about how I can incorporate this type of planning into exploring more of my own city and this beautiful area of the world where I live.

Last year I wrote a post, 10 Tips for Exploring Your Own City, (you can find it HERE) which has consistently stayed one of my top read posts. I think the reason for this is simply because we as people love to have adventures, and often want to travel to far off and exotic places but that isn't always possible. I think many times the word "adventure" is synonymous with far away travel, but maybe you don't have a ton of money to travel to far away places or maybe (like me) your health doesn't allow you to travel as much as you would like. Maybe you can't leave your job to travel. Maybe... maybe there are a 100 reasons you want to travel adventures but right now in this season you can't do that all of the time. But that doesn't mean you have to miss out on adventure and lose your spirit of wanderlust. I hope that this post will inspire you to explore right where you are and see the beautiful adventure of the life you have.

Here are 4 more tips for exploring your own city...
1. Act Like A TouristIf you had loved ones coming for a visit where would you take them? What are the things that you would want them to experience or the sights that surround and make up the place that you live? Research online to discover, find the history, consider visiting a state park or going to a museum.
Several years ago when I lived outside of Atlanta I remember planning a "Saturday vacation day". I, along with some friends, planned out an entire day "pretending" that we were driving from a great distance to Atlanta and we had to fit in as many things as we could. It was SUCH a fun day. We met up early, had brunch at a upscale hotel in downtown Atlanta, saw all of the sightseeing things you could possibly imagine, took pictures everywhere, grabbed dinner at an exclusive place that overlooked the city that a friend had a connection to and then went to a live show in the city. The places we picked were things we all had never done before and it truly felt like we had traveled to another world. It was fabulous. I had never done this in another city that I had lived in, but definitely plan to again.
2. Learn About the History of Your CitySeveral months ago my mom and I decided to venture to a new little town in Vermont. I was doing some research for an upcoming blog post on cute towns in Vermont and had wanted to include a town that I kept hearing about. We traveled a couple of hours and found the most adorable town, but we also received a huge lesson in history. As we drove into the town we saw lots of museums and historical markers telling and sharing that this town had played a huge part in the underground railroad, something I had never known.
To be honest, I felt that I knew the history of my city and the surrounding area and the large part that it played in the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, George Washington's ties, and mainly the War of 1812. Learning about the impact that a town had on the Underground Railroad was an eye-opening experience as I realized that there was still so much to learn about this place that I lived.
Maybe, like me, you think that you know the history of your city, but take the time to explore and research and learn on a different level. It will definitely provide you with adventures of wanting to explore new areas and things.
3. Accomplish a GoalWhat are some clubs or unique activities in your city that are specific to your area of the world? One of the things that many people try to accomplish in this area of the world is becoming apart of the "ADK46ers" club. To obtain this goal you commit to climbing all of the 46 mountain peaks that comprise the Adirondack Mountains. A couple of dear friends accomplished this goal last year and it was so exciting! There is also a "winterADK46ers" club and lots of variations. I am confident that your city or town has lots of similar things for all different interest. There are many cities that have wine tasting clubs, bookstore clubs, etc. Think about what you love to do and set out to accomplish this goal in your city!
4. Overlook Your CityIsn't it funny that when we are traveling we often search for a place to see the city from a high vantage point but never do this in our own cities? Almost every city has a tall building and is open to visitors where you can see the city skyline. Take a trip to do this. Check out if there are any lounges or restaurants that offer a view of the city as you eat a meal. Maybe you have a friend who has an apartment or home with a rooftop that overlooks the city- ask them if you can come and take some pictures. Take the time to plan to overlook your city and it will give you a new perspective of the place that you call "home".
What are tips you have for exploring your own city? I have said this before, but never feel that exploring your own city is second to exploring other areas of the world! Remember sweet friends, your beautiful life is the adventure and no matter how near or far you can physically go, you can make life FULL of adventure and joy right where you are at! (Want to read more on my thoughts on being adventurers? Check out this post HERE!)
