From Hope Valley (Week 14): The Beautiful Hope of Loving Someone Freely

One of the most profound episodes to me in Season 1 was episode 8. There were so many different moments of truth that were woven throughout this episode. I shared a couple of months ago about another quote from Jolene Miller in my post entitled, "The Hope Beyond the Lines" and wanted to come back to another part of the precious conversation between Elizabeth and Jolene for today's post.
This exchange gently speaks to the situation that all of us will encounter at some point in life- loving someone who has changed or is not responding to us the way that we long for. Despite the pain that Jolene expresses and the longing we may have for going back to a "different time", Elizabeth's words gently remind us that there is a hope in loving someone freely, no matter the response.
I think that it goes without saying that relationships in all forms can be difficult and messy. Circumstances can change people, life happens, and before we know it may seem that the person that we loved is a completely different person than who we knew before. Despite your attempt at loving someone, it may feel that your loving words fall on deaf ears. You may feel that despite your loving actions all you are receiving is hurt. You may long, as Jolene did, for how things were in the past.
You may be in a situation or in a relationship where it doesn't matter what type of kindness you show. You may have a friend who has changed and is not speaking life-giving words to you. You may be in a really tough situation with a co-worker or a family member like Jolene was. You may be in a relationship with someone who is not acting loving.
As you set appropriate boundaries in your life with these types of relationships, remember your love has the power to change the course of the future. You may see in a short time what love can do (like Jolene and her family did) or it may take years upon years and decades upon decades before you see a change. In truth, we may never see the impact that our love has had on people until we get to Heaven, but as Elizabeth gently reminds Jolene, all we can do is love people. While there are definitely boundaries that need to be placed in certain situations, in others there are times where we give up to soon. We walk away because it is easier to walk away instead of loving someone.
But friends, let's hold on to the beautiful truth of the hope that there is in loving someone. The truth that our love has the capacity to change someone's life. Let's let go of the expectations of how someone will respond and love them freely. Let's let go of putting the expectation of how someone will act or respond to love and just love. Let's live differently than the world around us instead spread love.
Mother Teresa once said, "Small things done with great love can change the world." Isn't that an amazing thought to ponder as we think through the profound truth that is found in the hope of loving someone freely? Your love today and the investment that you make into love has the potential to change the world.
You may be a mama reading this who is in the midst of dirty diapers or temper tantrums just trying to keep up with all of the demands. Your love that you are investing right now will change your children's lives. You may have a co-worker who is completely difficult to work with. The time that you take to practically love and try to step into this person's life could change the entire office. You may be a teacher with a student who continuously acts out and you are counting down the days till summer vacation. Use these next days and weeks to pour love into this student and who knows how you may change your school. The list goes on and on but the theme remains the same... there is a beautiful hope found in loving someone freely.
It doesn't matter the situation or where you are at in life. Everyone that you encounter needs love. Love that offers a smile, a kindness, a listening ear, or a word of encouragement. Love that builds into relationships day after day, month after month, and year after year. Love given freely will never come back without a person being changed. Keep pressing on, keep the faith, and live in the beautiful hope of loving someone freely.
"...So no, matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self...
Love ...puts up with anything,
trusts God always,
always looks for the best,
never looks back, but keeps going to the end.
Love never dies."
-Portions of I Corinthians 13:4-8, the Message-

Summer Things to do on Lake Champlain

Several weeks ago I received a phone call from a friend who was going to be visiting the Lake Champlain area with her family for several days this summer and was interested in knowing my suggestions for things to do on the lake. I started thinking and then listed thing after thing incredibly quickly until we were both laughing and she said, "just write a blog post". Laughingly I agreed and so today I thought I would share some of my favorite activities to do in this area. Enjoy y'all!

Water Activities It probably goes without saying that the water activities to do on the lake are endless. From boating to tubing to sailing to kayaking to skiing, the lake is a water lovers dream. I shared a couple of years ago about a typical day on the lake for us - especially as I was growing up. We spent hours upon hours from dawn till dusk skiing, tubing, and boating. If you love playing on the water than you will find tons of different activities to do.

Visit the Beach There are so many beautiful spots along Lake Champlain and with over 50 public beaches there are gorgeous areas for families and friends to gather for a day at the Beach or even have a picnic. Some of you may remember my post on the New York Marshland and Valcour Island from years ago. That New York Marshland is a perfect example of how gorgeous these beaches are!
Walk Around One of the Adorable Towns on the Shores of Lake Champlain
I love all of the cute towns along Lake Champlain, including one of my favorites, Essex, and all of its adorable charms. A couple of years ago I shared some of my favorite towns to visit along the New York side of Lake Champlain, including Fort Ticonderoga, Westport, Essex, Crown Point, and Valcour. These, and many other towns along the lake offer adorable New England charm, quaint and yummy dining options with beautiful lake side views, a rich and cultural experience, and unique shopping.
Biking All along Lake Champlain there are tons of different bike paths that you can choose from that will take you around the Lake, or by the Lake (like the beautiful views that the Burlington Vermont Bike Path offers), and some that even "cross the lake" using one of the ferries or bridges.
National Museums and Landmarks Throughout the Lake Champlain area there are tons of National Landmarks due to the incredible American History that was fought in this area and also lots of National Museums for those who are interested in seeing those during their visits.
Diving Many people think of diving as something solely found in the more tropical parts of the world but may be surprised to find out that Lake Champlain offers fantastic opportunities for those who love diving. There are nine known shipwrecks and most of them have been very well preserved due to the cold-water environment. What divers will also be pleased to discover is that beyond some of the boats that are from the 1800s, there is actual parts of the Horse Ferry (which was featured in National Geographic) which is the only known wreck of a horse-powered ferry in the United States!
Finally, beyond the shipwrecks that are found in Lake Champlain divers will be able to experience vertical cliffs that are extremely dramatic and often only found in the Bahamas. Interested in finding out more? Click HERE to go to the Waterfront Diving Center website in Burlington, Vermont!
Fishing Fishing competitions, including the Bass Competition are huge parts of the community here on Lake Champlain. But whether you just enjoy casting your net out in a leisurely manner (with someone else who will do the worms for you *smiles*) or you are one who likes to fish for competition, Lake Champlain offers several different options to explore.
Sailing I admit that sailing when I was a kid was not one of my favorite activities. Those of you who grew up with me and are reading this are laughing because it was actually quite comical how many different circumstances happened when we would sail. I won't bore you here, but suffice it to say that it didn't become one of my favorite activities until I grew older. My mama loves to sail and has often joked that she is praying that I will marry a man who loves to sail too. She loves to be up at the crack of dawn, sailing in her baby sunfish, and would spend hours upon hours in our sailboat if she had the opportunity. As the years have passed I, as I have mentioned, have honestly grown to love it. While financially we have not had our "bigger" sailboat in in years it is still one of my favorite activities to recommend to people.
If you don't own a sailboat or don't know how to sail you can easily learn how to at the Lake at the Community Sailing Center in Burlington. You can find out more on their website by clicking HERE
Burlington, Vermont Jazz Festival Every year Burlington hosts a Jazz festival that is so much fun. If you enjoy live music (especially jazz music) then you are in for a treat and I definitely recommend planning your trip around this event! You can find out all of the details for the upcoming year on their website by clicking HERE
Hiking Both the Adirondack Mountains and the Green Mountains surround the beautiful Lake Champlain. If you love hiking then this area of the United States is a hikers dream. If you are interested in hiking the Adirondacks and want to hike all of the "46 peaks" for the "46ers club" you can find out more about this HERE. Two of my friends completed this last year and it was such an exciting accomplishment! If you are interested in finding out more about hiking in the Green Mountains you can join the "Green Mountain Club" and find out more about it HERE
Island Hop There are many islands scattered through Lake Champlain. While some are privately owned or protected by the state there are several islands that you can go to by boat for a picnic or to camp out on. Don't have a boat? Consider visiting Burton Island which is a Vermont State Park that can be accessed (for free) by ferry!
There are so many different things to do on Lake Champlain during the summer! What are your favorites?

Monday Inspiration and Encouragement (Volume Four)

I shared a couple of months ago that for a while now I have had a dream of sharing some Monday inspiration and encouragement on the blog. Life is hard and I know full well that in the difficult times it can be hard to find inspiration, so a couple of months ago I shared my first post (which you can find HERE and all of the Monday inspiration posts HERE) and I plan to routinely share with y'all different things that I have found to be really inspiring and encouraging from all different genres and hope that it will encourage and inspire you for your week!  {one} Every book that I write is deeply personal in sharing my heart, but none so much as my heart through Lyme Disease as my new book, When Truth Refreshes that released last week. So I am completely overwhelmed to have received notification from Amazon that it stayed in the top 500 books these past two weeks in a couple of categories. Thank you so much for your support of this project!!
AND here is an exciting announcement if you missed my post earlier today!! If you purchase When Truth Refreshes during the rest of the month of May I will send you a copy of Praying through Lyme Disease (the 2nd Edition) that is releasing June 1st for FREE. Simply email me (rebeccaannvandemark@gmail.com) with a confirmed purchase number from where you purchased the book or picture of your receipt and I will send you a copy of Praying through Lyme Disease (the 2nd Edition) in June! If you have already purchased When Truth Refreshes you are still eligible for this! Thank you again for your support of this project!!
{two} I love reading inspiring stories of those who have done unique and amazing things to touch and change the world around them. Here are a couple of my favorites that I read this past week from this article HERE: "Jeremy and Kaley Carling were unable to have kids of their own so they pursued adoption. But after supporting a woman emotionally and financially through a pregnancy, she changed her mind about giving up her child after giving birth. But their heartbreak has a happy ending: On August 11 they received a call from social services that biological sisters Haven and Indie were up for adoption, and another call about a birth mother who wanted to place her twin girls with the Carlings. They decided to adopt all four kids. “I always felt like we would end up with the children that we were supposed to wind up with,” Kaley told Us. “Now that they’re here, I believe that more than ever.”" Kasey Simmons, a waiter at an Applebee’s in Little Elm, Texas, was waiting in the checkout line at Kroger supermarket when he noticed the woman ahead of him had been crying. He decided to pay for the stranger’s $17 worth of groceries and gave her his contact info, along with an offer to come by his workplace for a coffee or dessert on the house to talk. The next day, Simmons received a $500 tip on a 37-cent bill for a flavored water. A note on a napkin read, “On behalf of the Sullivan family, I want to thank you for being the person you are. On one of the most depressing days of the year (the death of my father, 3 year anniversary) you made my mother’s day wonderful. She has been smiling since you did what you did.”
{three} Are you traveling to Canada this summer or in the fall? Want to explore any of the parks? Guess what? Canada is celebrating 150 years of Parks and Historic sites and you can receive a FREE park pass to all of the national parks and many of the historic sites in Canada simply by filling out an application. I did this a couple of weeks ago and mine just arrived in the mail this weekend. SO neat! You can find the Free Pass HERE along with more information!
{fourth} Okay, at some point y'all may get tired of me talking about ice skating (*smiles*), but this performance by 17 year old Evgenia Medvedeva at Worlds was stunningly beautiful. She is the first woman since Michelle Kwan to win back-to-back World titles and seriously it is hauntingly beautiful. You can watch it HERE. {fifth}Since posting the above picture on Instagram several weeks ago I have been receiving emails asking what journaling Bible that I use. I use the ESV Journaling Bible (The Interleaved Version). The cheapest that I have found it for was on Amazon which you can find HERE. If you are looking for the non-interleaved version that looks similar you can find it HERE
{sixth} Years and years ago when I was graduating from college one of my favorite Pastor's, Alistair Begg preached a sermon entitled "My Times are in Your Hands" from Psalm 31. To be frank these last several weeks have been incredibly difficult and I kept returning to Psalm 31 again and again remembering the truth of those words preached so many years ago. Yesterday, when I went to listen to church online I was delighted to find a couple of youtube videos of a similar sermon with the same title that Alistair preached at a different university. If you are struggling, need encouragement, and are looking for some gentle truth I can't recommend these two sermons enough. You can find part 1 HERE and part 2 HERE
I hope that you are inspired and encouraged by these six things on this Monday afternoon! What about you? What is inspiring you recently?

11 Simple Tips for Living Well With a Chronic Illness

1. Be Upfront and Clear About Your LimitationsNo matter the response you receive make sure that you are upfront and clear about what your limitations are with your illness. To be honest this was a hard thing for me to learn at the beginning of this journey as my heart wanted to go and live like I had been before I got sick. Unfortunately when I wasn't clear everything ended up more of a mess and usually resulted in me crying. Learning to be upfront and clear about my limitations helped me to put down boundary lines that have truly helped me heal. I know that sometimes this can be hard to do, especially if you don't receive the support you hope to, but continue to be firm but kind with your limitations. I promise that overtime this is one of the best things you can do to live well with a chronic illness.
2. Accept Help.
3. Share specific Things that Others Can Help You WithThe difficult thing with illness is that often times loved ones truly don't know how they can specifically help someone in a health crisis. Find ways to lovingly share specifically what your loved ones can do. A friend of mine who struggles with extreme back pain due to a failed surgery found that asking her for help with her laundry saved her countless days in bed after she attempts to do it. Personally for me I have been so grateful for my dad helping me with changing Scamper's litter. It might be something small or it may be something bigger on a routine basis, but think through ways that others can help and then as mentioned in #2, accept the help.
4. Be Vulnerable With Your TribeIt can be hard to be vulnerable when you are feeling so sick and tired with pain and sickness. I know that a lot of us want to put on a brave face with those that we encounter, but having the courage to be vulnerable can be a life-changing situation for living well with a chronic illness. Having this courage can help prevent a lot of awkward issues from occurring during this journey. Take the leap of faith and express your heart.
5. Be Patient With Explaining The Health LingoAs patients we become so familiar with spouting off all of the different terms, nicknames, meds, supplements, cell interaction, cell pathways, symptoms, etc. that it can be hard to remember that our friends and family can be left feeling overwhelmed and dizzy by the amount of things we are talking about. Even though our lives may revolve around the sickness aspect, theirs revolve around us. They want to understand and they do care, but we may need to extend some patience as we have to explain something again and again. Be patient and understand that they are doing the best they can.
6. Be the Best Friend and Family Member that You Can Be. It can be hard to keep up with all of the important dates in people's lives since you became ill. Sometimes we are just trying to cope with the day let alone remember to purchase a card or a gift for someone. Despite the way that illness has changed you fight to still be the best friend that you can be. This may look different than before you got sick, but still take the time to connect with others, make phone calls, send cards, and deepen your friendships. Stay connected in every way possible to your tribe. Honestly, I haven't done the best job of this over the years. Maybe you feel the same way. It is never to late to re-start. Take the time today to make a phone call or write a letter. I promise you will be glad you did.
7. Do the Best You Can to Attend EventsYou may not be able to attend them all or even a handful, but try to attend all of the important events that you can. Even if you don't feel or look the best, people will be thrilled to see you and it is great for your life.
8. Understand That This is a SeasonThere will be beautiful days again. Hold on to the hope that there are far better things ahead than we could ever imagine.
9. AcceptanceFor every single person struggling with a chronic illness this is going to mean something different, but Amy Carmichael was right: "in acceptance lies peace".
10. Let Friends GoLet the people go who are not willing to walk this journey with you. Let them go freely and give your blessing. Forgive and live in joy. Wish them well, let go of the bitterness, and walk the road in front of you with dignity. Stick to the Code. (Yes, I did feel like I was quoting the Pirates of the Caribbean saying that. hahaha, but seriously, Stick to the Code,
11. Find Joy in Every Day.There is joy to be found in every single day if we look for it. Look for it. Search it out. Fight for it. You will never regret finding joy.

From Hope Valley (Week 13): The Promise of Finding Redemptive Purpose

One of my favorite parts of the 7th episode in Season 1 were the words that gentle yet truthful words that Elizabeth spoke to Abigail in this tender scene.  There is such a simple yet deep truth that is conveyed here, the promise that despite unimaginable heartache God will write redemptive stories of finding purpose in our lives.

Life in all of its beautiful unpredictability can shift the ground under us, leaving us to feel lost and like we don’t know what our purpose is. In times of grief, especially when we lose someone or something in which our identity and purpose is found on, we can struggle in the day to day.

In a variety of ways we all have experienced (in some form) the grief that Abigail expresses to Elizabeth. We may have lost a spouse, our health, a job, a child, our home, a relationship, or experienced a life change that leaves us feeling that we are drifting without a clear purpose. We may even feel like Abigail, wondering what we have to offer to the world before us without the titles and relationships that we had previously. It can be incredibly difficult to know how to move forward. How to find purpose in our deep pain.
All of us want to have purpose in our lives. We all want our lives to count in deep and meaningful ways. We want the time that we spend here on earth to matter for something greater. Yet there are times in life where we can struggle to figure out what our purpose is, to navigate a great loss or a new situation that we weren’t expecting. There are times that we have to catch our breath and figure out how we fit into a "new" world that we find ourselves in when life throws us a curve ball that we were never expecting. In grief we can feel that we have lost our way, like Abigail, and feel that we have no purpose.
But just like Elizabeth encouraged Abigail with truth that God would show her what He wanted for her, God will show us what He wants for us too. He will show us a purpose that He has despite our grief and guide us in the way that we go.
Isn't it interesting to now look back on this exchange between Elizabeth and Abigail after several seasons? Now as we have had the opportunity to see Abigail's story continue to unfold, we see that she has lived out new finding redemptive purpose. She has had beautiful courage in opening Abigail's cafe, which has proven to be a safe space for many in the town to gather and share their hearts. She has fed countless people not only physically, but emotionally. Abigail has also spent her love freely, pouring it out on countless hurting people throughout the town. She has opened her heart and home to her daughter-in-love, creating a beautiful relationship. And then at the end of this current season, we see a new family formed with the official adoption of Cody and Becky. In each of these ways and in many others we see the beautiful redemptive truth that Elizabeth spoke so many years ago. God has shown and will continue to show Abigail the purpose that He has for her each day.
And we have this same beautiful truth and promise to hold on to. It may take time friends, but with God's hand guiding us we can find redemptive purpose in the most unusual places. We can see and experience beautiful new stories unfolding that we could never have imagined. Hold on to this hope there is a beautiful blessing and promise in finding redemptive purpose, even in the darkest night of pain.
"But I'll take the hand of those who don't know the way, who can't see where they're going. I'll be a personal guide to them, directing them through unknown country. I'll be right there to show them what roads to take, make sure they don't fall into the ditch. These are the things I'll be doing for them- sticking with them, not leaving them for a minute."
-Isaiah 42:16, the Message-

I am truly so overwhelmed and humbled by the beautiful support and reviews that this book receives. It is hard to believe that there are more than 10,000 copies of this book in print. It truly overwhelms my heart. I also shared a couple of weeks ago that I am so excited that Praying through Lyme Disease the 2nd edition will be released in a Large Print Format. This has been in the works for a couple of years so I am thrilled and excited for this to be available also on June 1st!
