Helen Barbour

From childhood, school reports noted my ‘voracious’ appetite for reading, but I only discovered my passion for writing in my early thirties. Newly separated from my husband, and seeking to rebuild my social life, I joined an evening class in creative writing at my local college – inspired by my short-lived career as a journalist. At the end of the year, our tutor’s parting words to me were ‘Keep writing!’

Buoyed by her encouragement, I did, and not long afterwards I had an epiphany: this was the thing I was born to do. I was no good at music or sport and, although academically gifted, I’d never found my vocation – until now. This sudden certainty came as both a relief and an absolute joy.

I love the way writing enables me to share my experience of the world, in particular my experience of living with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, which feature in my debut novel and which I also write about on my blog. Given the continuing stigma around mental health, I’m passionate about raising awareness and increasing understanding. It may be a serious topic, but I try to handle it in an accessible way and with a light touch – I want to inform and entertain – and the positive feedback from readers has been immensely rewarding.

I can’t fix all the wrongs of the world, but I can make tiny corners of it better, and it’s writing that allows me to do so.

My 2016 New Year’s Resolutions

Writers of the world

I couldn’t be more excited for the year ahead. I know that there’s still room to grow no matter how old I get. Resolutions are a terrific way of giving myself an extra nudge in the right direction so I wrote down seven that I plan on following through with.

1. My first New Year’s resolution is to write two novels in 2016: one mystery and one literary work of fiction.

2. My second resolution is to re-read more classics. I’m inspired by the works of the imagination that endure through generations of readers. What is it about them that keeps us coming back to their pages over and over again?

3. Contemporary novels have enormous value in our society as well, which leads me to my third New Year’s resolution: to read more of them in 2016. New voices offer new perspectives. I never stop learning; life would be too dull if I did.

4. My fourth resolution for the new year is to be available for mentoring young writers. All of my experiences could be helpful to someone else who is just starting out.

5. Another one of my resolutions is to show interest in why other people write. I was inspired to create Writers of the World because I saw how much burgeoning writers would benefit from a platform where their voices and life stories could be heard.

6. My sixth resolution is to encourage older people to write works of the imagination. It strengthens our minds and souls. It relieves tension and teaches us new things about ourselves.

7. Lastly, I plan on listening to millennials more carefully. They are the future and they’ve got a lot to offer. Happy New Year, everyone!

The desire to write has been with me since I was old enough to read, but life and obligations got in my way until 2004. It didn’t stop my brain from creating, however, so by the time I sat down at my computers I had a file folder full of ideas. The process of taking an idea and actually creating a story about it excites me. My stories are all character driven, so the best part is fleshing out these two people—the hero and heroine—and seeing where their personalities take them as I work through the story line. I love putting myself in their place and figuring out what I would do if I were each of them, so my plots are very personalized. Where else can I live so many adventures and stories except in the plots of the books that I write! But the best emotional satisfaction comes from the responses of my readers, who write to tell me how much they enjoy each and every tale. Knowing I bring pleasure to them is the most satisfying feeling of all.

I am aged 80. I find that many of my friends are writing their life stories in order to give a better picture of their backgrounds for their adult children and hopefully their “grandies” to read and help them understand us “fuddy-duddies” and why we are as we are. We all have a story to tell–and even the hard times had their character-building aspect. You can’t appreciate the good till you taste the bad. Times and events and today’s changing advancing technology which we have struggled with–the experience of living through a depression and two world wars, the inevitable simple times, thrift, making do and searching our own way through the changing morals and affluence which rule our way of life today and knowing the satisfaction of the contentment of winning in harder times the well-earned love of one’s family which tops the lot for contentment and satisfaction. On balance–even the bad times were good. That is my inspiration in writing down my life story and perhaps this will be a springboard for my enjoyment of creating further works.

When I was in my teens I wrote poems that told stories. As a matter of fact, I still have them from all those years ago. Then I started writing because I lived in make-believe in my head how I wished my life would be, but it never turned out that way. So I started writing stories of how my alter ego would live if it existed. I also would visit my alter ego in my dreams and imagine that it was real. I could have that perfect partner, the established business, the happy family but my reality wasn’t even close. So, I continue to write to find some sense of worth in the reality of my imagination of my inner dreams.

Because metaphors are the knives that cut the belly of the beast, the hives fermenting honey out of life.

Because every night I was alone with just a razor and despair to call my own a hundred strangers placed their pens upon my bones and held me while they made their dreams my home.

Because with five letters and a full stop Marcel Duchamp tore art from the walls and threw it on the floor and declared creativity was open for us all.

Because words shape worlds, and not just the ones you find in books. They are the colours that determine how reality looks, painting the people you meet with shades of nuance, making these ones heroes those ones crooks. They are bricks that build an architecture of alienation so quickly from a single whisper one day you find yourself looking down at the bodies scattered round the base of the tower, wondering was that really all it took?

Because words can raise demons from the dust, conjure up a god in whom a nation trusts, drown a generation’s hopes in lust, find madness in the passion of the just – because if a person who dreams only of themselves could do all of this then one who dreams of justice MUST.

Alexis Donkin

Love.

I write what I write because of love. I love people and want them to do better. I want them to be better. I know the power of stories because I was raised on them – a child of two ministers. My parents are excellent storytellers. This gift was handed down for generations on both sides of my family. I couldn’t help but use it.

It is my purpose. It is my purpose to share ideas that break down barriers and build the human community. Every novel and blog post seeks to increase compassion and empathy. Every poem and memoir seeks to empower and encourage. Everything idea is shared with this intention. It doesn’t matter how many people read or don’t. It doesn’t matter how many minds and hearts are directly impacted. I can’t know how my work will impact the world and I can’t waste energy or resources worrying. All that matters is that my words send ripples. All that matters is the one reader – the one influenced to be better, to be more than what they were before. If I have done that, I am successful. So I write, seeking that one reader, not knowing when they will find me, but sure that someday they will.

Veronica Scott

Writing is like breathing to me – I have to do it! I started writing at the age of seven with a self-illustrated tale of princesses, flying cats and riverboat captains. Dad read nothing but science fiction, and gave me my first Andre Norton book, which shaped my entire writing career from that moment on. Mom was an ancient history buff, so we had shelves of sword and sandal novels, and Time-Life books about Egypt, Greece and Rome. Being a voracious reader, I never had enough science fiction books to read (or novels set in ancient Egypt), so I started writing my own stories in each genre.

I like to create fully formed worlds containing their own mysteries and back story. I try to give the reader glimpses of hidden secrets during the adventures, hopefully just enough to leave them wanting more. For the sci fi, which occurs in a future galactic civilization called the Sectors, I ask myself “why this” and how does that” and “if I lived on this planet what would I…” The novels may be science fiction, based in a technological, galactic civilization but I want there to be that element of something else, something mystical, that can’t quite be explained. By anyone!

My favorite part of writing is sharing my stories with other people, hopefully for their enjoyment, just as I enjoyed Andre Norton and other wonderful authors. Books expanded my horizons and gave me endless adventures. I want to do the same for my readers.
