Writing is my first love. It’s an innate gift from God, which I cherish completely. I loved sharing stories with my mother as a child. I would blurt, “I want to be an author one day.” She would smile, without uttering a word. Pure motivation!
Writing is emotionally significant to me because it allows me to bare my soul. When emerging from girlhood to womanhood, I wrote about ‘love’ and ‘nature’. But by my mid-twenties, I focused on disability issues.
After shockingly experiencing prejudice in the workplace, I later acknowledged another great gift from God, which had emerged—advocacy.
Consequently, I began writing about my experiences as a physically challenged person with my first article in ‘The Independent Newspaper’ in 1995. I advocated for change.
Being a member of the Dominica Writers’ Guild helped enormously! I was surrounded by fantastic writers! I loved attending our poetry sessions, ‘Word, Sound and Power!’ These were splendid nights!
I was such a shy girl back then. However, fellow writers contributed to my artistic development with great tips. The ‘90s was a great decade for writers in my Country!
One of my articles was published in ‘The Caribbean Messenger’, a Church of Christ newsletter in Texas. My poem, ‘Woman and Challenged’, was featured in the anthology, ‘Word, Sound and Power’.
I absolutely love advocacy and writing. It’s interchangeable to me. Writing has allowed me to make a valid contribution to my country’s development.

With parents who were reporters at The Washington Post during the Watergate Era, I grew up in the newsroom, surrounded by typewriters, passionate people and the smell of newspaper ink. I marinated in the ink as a child and it became infused in my blood, like an I.V. drip. I have always written and have always been the writer in the family, while my brother was the artist. It started out as a way to escape myself yet express myself. Immerse yet disappear. And then a teacher told me “if you can write like that, keep writing.” And it became a skill and a source of pride. Then it became a profession that paid my rent. I used to write sad, dark stories with twisted plots, some fiction, some real. The real was when I wrote the news and it was all about fires, robberies and shootings. Now I’m much more at peace and my writing voice has changed. I use it to teach and inspire and elevate if I can. It has grown stronger and louder, yet gentler and more compassionate. Capturing an entire story and scene simply on a page is –and always will be– a fascination of mine. I have tried to stop writing, especially after a book got rejected by publishers, which I mourned like a stillborn death. But then I feel empty with no words to fill me up. And I remember that strange type of blood blackening my veins.

After my mother passed when I was 10, five years later, writing & I found each other and our love is stronger than ever!
Writing became the way that I communicate. No longer was I speaking to people and being as open as I used to. I shut down after her death and to this day still prefer to write as opposed to speak. I feel I express myself better in that regard, I feel more confident.
I use the written word as a vehicle for my own pain, but additionally if it touches other people as well then as a writer I couldn’t ask for anything more. When my quotes are tweeted, shared etc. it is proof to me that I am following my heart’s path.

Foremost, I am a reader. In grade school, I would spend my breaks in the library, then feel sad when I heard the ringing of the bell that signaled the end of recess because it would mean parting with an unfinished book. After school, I would again pass by the library to borrow and take home the maximum allowed number of books, mostly big and hardbound fairy tales with beautiful illustrations. It was in the 3rd grade that I started writing. I came home from school and was heartbroken to find out that my dog had passed away. I wrote a poem about it using my dad’s typewriter and left it on the machine’s roller, purposely for him to read. I felt good after writing my very first piece, but the best part was when my father complimented my composition. I had my first “review” from a reader and it encouraged me! I never had a dog afterwards, but I continued writing from then on.
The reason I write remains the same…to relate ideas, thoughts, opinions, feelings, experiences or any matter of interest to an audience. As a writer, I will always be needy to connect; otherwise, the written words are meaningless, futile, dead.

I write because I love to play ‘what-if’. What if you were the only person who had dreams? Or: If you can go to past lives under hypnosis, could you go to a future life?
I write because I’m an expressive person trapped inside a shy one. As a child I was weird and said the wrong things, but on the page I was at home and full of courage.
And I write because I love what words can do. Every syllable carries a sound or image or feeling directly into the reader’s mind. A good book becomes the voice of their thoughts. It lingers like a piece of their own life. We might think words are ordinary because we use them for everything; to-do lists, labels, instructions, notes that remind us to ‘buy more milk’ or tell someone we’ll be ‘back later’. We hardly notice that words are also magic.

Writing is a form of therapy for me. I have a degree in journalism and used to be sports editor of a daily newspaper until my wife basically said it was the newspaper or her. The reason? I was working too many hours covering athletic events. Because I opted for her, we now have been happily married for over 39 years.
Unfortunately, I still miss writing on a daily basis. That’s why I now have published two books since 2006. The first one, entitled “Gauntlet Golf”, was a fiction novel. Even though it basically was my autobiography, I changed the names to protect the innocent and the not-so-innocent. I also modified some of the incidents in the book.
My second book was published in November, 2014. Its title is “Golf Is More Than A Score” and it is non-fiction. I wrote it in first-person format and addressed such subjects as etiquette, cheating, walking instead of riding, etc. Unfortunately, it has angered at least one of my friends and probably several others.
Unlike the typical writer, I don’t use an outline for my books. I am a creative individual and I merely write from my heart. Once I complete the first draft, I spend several more weeks going through it and carefully editing it. In other words, I check my grammar, punctuation and spelling plus add anecdotes to it. Hopefully, my books convey my love for writing to my readers.
Two guys intentionally injured my knee during a basketball game in 1980. It was a serious injury and it has prevented me from running distance and playing basketball the past 35 years. It also has had a negative impact on my golf swing and I am a much shorter hitter as a result.
Writing “Gauntlet Golf” was outstanding therapy for me because it allowed me to share my pent-up frustrations with my readers. It also permitted me to deal with my depression from the injury and become a more positive individual.
I am now 62 years old and plan to retire in another four or six years. Unlike my peers, who say they will be bored once they retire, I will have a life that will keep both my body and mind in good shape. Instead of merely sitting in a chair and watching television every day, I plan to continue playing golf, working out at the gym and authoring more books.
At this time, I have several ideas for a new book. However, I probably won’t begin writing it until I retire because I have a very demanding sales job.
Of course, it frequently is too cold or snowy to play golf during the winter months in Indiana. Maybe I will be able to devote my Saturdays to writing instead of playing golf during those months. If nothing else, it will make my winters past faster.

I didn’t mean to write a book. I’m just a scribbler of drawings – the bits of life that interest me. Invited to the first naming of a Eurostar train I discovered it was to be named “Michel Hollard”. Who? Nobody in England or France knew who this man was – but he was called “The man who saved London” Meeting his family and the survivors of his resistance network and drawing all the time I was led deeper and deeper into his story. Until. A French Artist friend looking at my sketchbook said “Jed. You have half a book here already” So four years later I finished the other half and now it’s out: “Le Train de Michel,” a French title for an English Graphic Novel by me: Jed Falby.

I was sure I’d had a terrible childhood, but when I told people about it, I discovered that my perspective on it changed. Eventually I wrote stories of life with my very difficult-to-live-with father. Growing older, I kept telling my stories to friends and co-workers. Folks would laugh and then they’d suggest I write a book.
“Can’t write a book,” I’d say. “I’ve tried and I always get bored in the middle.” But those books were novels.
Then a niece directed me to a social media site called Gather.com (now defunct), meant to help writers develop their skills and help each other. I put a few of my stories out there, and got the same response… “Very funny.” “Loved your Old Man.” “You should write a book.”
“Sorry, can’t write a book. I get bored in the middle.”
But that didn’t work this time. We were there to help each other, and one person decided to “do something.” She word-counted all the stories from my Gather pages. When she finished, she e-mailed me, “Chuck, you’ve written over 100,000 words about your Old Man and you. That’s a book. Find a publisher.
It wasn’t that easy, of course, but I made 53 stories into a memoir I titled The Old Man and Me, and now there are two volumes in circulation. They’re funny, and filled with joy and disappointment and good stuff and bad (but mostly good). I’m working on volume three.

When I graduated with an MBA I raced home and spewed forth a short story about a twin in search of a precious photograph of her sister who had died years before. Later I realized the twin longing for her dead sister was the psychological representation of me trying to reclaim myself. I had been in an emotionally abusive marriage and suppressed all parts of me that had made me distinct, unique. I write to be the person I’m meant to be and to tell emotionally engaging stories for masses.

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write. It started with poems in the 5th grade, which turned out to be a gateway “drug” to longer and more complex stories as I got older. While I did find that I had a talent for writing—which may have had something to do with the fact that I read constantly—my complete lack of imagination led me to more non-fiction type works than fiction.
My first self-published work was The Fashion Industry Resource Book, which was later picked up by Fairchild Publications. My second book, The Little Black Dress, was published by Simon & Schuster in ’97. My third book, and first novel, Manless in Montclair, published by Shaye Arehart Books, an imprint of Crown, in 2007, is my most personal book, as it was spurred by the sudden death of my husband in 2001. I believe that in many ways, being able to write that story (which was mostly true) helped me to cope with his death and the subsequent aftermath.
In terms of the emotional significance of writing, I guess one could argue that the fact that I always had my head in a book led to a rich interior emotional life that was best expressed through writing. Or it could be simply that the many of the books I’ve read over the years have moved me greatly, and I feel that it’s my privilege and joy to try and replicate that feeling for other readers.
