Blog of the (Living) Dead

Every Thursday, I am covering a series from the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia related to television or film.  Today, I am covering two separate series that branched off of the same film:  Night of the Living Dead.  One is the Return of the Living Dead series, and the other is George Romero's Dead series.  I've also included some entries not directly a spin-off of Romero's Night of the Living Dead, but featuring zombies that are modeled after those originally from that film.

Since this chronology features multiple timelines, I have color coded the entries.  Black = TVCU/Horror Universe.  Red = Romero's Zombieland.  Blue = Other divergent timelines.

ANNO DRACULA (SERIES BY KIM NEWMAN)Release Date: 1992 - 2013 (so far) [Setting is 1888 -1991 (so far)]Series: Anno Dracula

Chetwynd-Hayes); Anak Pontianak; Necroscope; Revelations in Black; The Dragon Waiting; The Bloody Pit of Horror/The Crimson Executioner; The Playgirls and the Vampire; The Niece of the Vampire/Fangs of the Vampire; The Phantom of the Opera; Incense for the Damned/Bloodsuckers; Addams Family (television); Frankenstein (Universal); The Monkey’s Paw; Three Mothers trilogy; Toby Dammit; The Exorcist; Cave of the Living Dead; The Golem (1920 film); The Old Dark House; Cat People; Black Magic (film); Spirits of the Dead; Les Vampires; The Awful Doctor Orloff; A Bucket of Blood; Those Who Hunt By Night/Immortal Blood/Traveling with the Dead; The Hunger; Fevre Dream; Empire of Fear; Dr. Blood’s Coffin; The Vampire’s Ghost; The Horrible Sexy Vampire; Mark of the Vampire; Vampire (1979); Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Gray; El Hombre Lobo; Curse of the Undead; Circus of Horrors; The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus; Twice Bitten/Vampire Hookers; The Lost Boys; Deathmaster; Velvet Vampire; I, Vampire; Nancy Baker’s Vampire Stories; Sunglasses After Dark; Vamps (Vertigo Comics); Blade; Scooby-Doo; Hellboy; Nocturna; Rosemary’s Baby; American Psycho; Lost Souls; Elvira; Rosemary’s Baby; The Films of Tarantino and Rodriguez; Light at the End; Andy Warhol’s Dracula/Blood for Dracula; Geek Maggot Bingo; Daughter of Darkness; Nightmare in Blood; Madhouse; Vampire Junction/Vanitas; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Shadowman; Werewolf of London; Little Shop of Horrors; Texas Chainsaw Massacre; The Howling; Gremlins; Suckers: Bleeding London Dry; Desire the Vampire/I Desire; The Creature Commandos; The Vampire (1957); The Vampire (Sydney Horler)Non-Horror Crosses: Too numerous to list. The Story: In 1888, during the events of Bram Stoker’s novel, events diverge and Dracula marries Queen Victoria, causing a major alteration in the socio-political world for the next 125 years and beyond.Notes: This is a divergent timeline, but not a parallel universe. In my theory, a parallel universe is created at the dawn of time at the same time as the main universe and other parallel universes. They may evolve similarly, but they are separate. Meanwhile, each universe has a main timeline, and at each moment, there are an infinite number of divergent timelines created off of the main timeline. When thinking of divergent timelines, try picturing a fork in the road. Both paths lead in different directions, but they both start at the same point, and once were the same road. The Anno Dracula timeline has shown to be an alternate timeline of the main Horror Universe in several other entries in this reference guide. Because it’s a divergent timeline, the above horror crosses, though depicted in an alternate manner, should still count for inclusions in the Horror Universe. Some of the above crossed series are already in, and the others are brought in via this crossover series despite being an alternate timeline series. For the record, the complete Anno Dracula series (thus far) consists of Anno Dracula, the Bloody Red Baron: Anno Dracula 1918, Judgement of Tears: Anno Dracula 1959 (aka Dracula Cha Cha Cha), Coppola’s Dracula (from the Mammoth Book of Dracula), Castle in the Desert: Anno Dracula 1977, Andy Warhol’s Dracula: Anno Dracula 1978 - 1979 (from the Mammoth Book of Vampires), Who Dares Wins: Anno Dracula 1980, The Other Side of Midnight (from Vampire Sextette), You are the Wind Beneath My Wings: Anno Dracula 1984) and Johnny Alucard.

WHITE ZOMBIE (FILM)Release Date; July 28, 1932 (Contemporary Setting)Series: White ZombieThe Story: In Haiti, a plantation owner wants another man’s fiance to marry him, and so enlists the assistance of voodoo master Murder Legendre, who turns the girl into a zombie.Notes: Many writers seem to love using Murder Legendre as the villain in their stories. I wonder what kind of mother names her child “Murder”, though. Note that the zombies in this story are the traditional voodoo type zombies. These are people placed into a drug induced trance who appear to have died and been resurrected to become obedient slaves. This shouldn’t be confused with the type of zombie made famous by George Romero in fiction in which a deceased person is resurrected by some means (comet, radiation, gas, etc.) to become a flesh or brain eating monster. This film is followed by the 1936 sequel Revolt of the Zombies. This film was remade in 2009. The film is referenced in non-crossover ways in films such as Bride of the Monster, Vampire Hunter D, and Ed Wood.

TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 6: GRAND GUIGNOL “THE CHILDREN OF HERACLES” (STORY BY ROMAN LEARY)Release Date: 2010 (Setting is 1949)Series: Tales of the ShadowmenHorror Crosses: Behemoth the Sea Monster; the Magnetic Monster; Kolchak the Night Stalker; The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms; Night of the Living Dead; Phantoms; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; “The Stephen King Universe” (the works of Stephen King)Non-Horror Crosses: Nyctalope; Andromeda Strain; Quatermass; Doctor Who; Big Bad John; Six Million Dollar ManThe Story: The heroic Nyctalope is in California teaming with Professor Quatermass against the evil Agent Lord.Notes: There are appearances of characters from Behemoth the Sea Monster, the Magnetic Monster, Kolchak the Night Stalker, Big Bad John, and the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Behemoth the Sea Monster is a 1959 monster film. The Magnetic Monster is a 1953 monster movie. Kolchak the Night Stalker is a 1970s television series about a reporter who investigates the unknown, particularly the supernatural. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is another 1953 giant sea monster movie. Agent Lord is intended to be the time travelling Time Lord villain called the Master from the sci-fi series Doctor Who, using an alias. He refers to events from the future, from the Andromeda Strain, Night of the Living Dead, Phantoms, and Stephen King’s Desperation. He also refers to the Shoggoth from Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. The Nyctalope is of course the French vigilante from the early 20th century. Quatermass is the main character from the British television series of the same name. Big Bad John is the main character from the song of the same name from country singer Jimmy Dean. The OSI (Office of Scientific Investigation) is mentioned here, which is in the Magnetic Monster, but also from the novel Cyborg, which became the basis for the television series Six Million Dollar Man and the spin-off Bionic Woman. All of the above mentioned series, books, and films are all shown to co-exist in the Horror Universe, though of course only the horror crosses can be used to link and bring in further crossovers. And yes, once again, Doctor Who is in the Horror Universe!!! And see my notes elsewhere for how zombie movies fit into the Horror Universe.
COLLIERS MAGAZINE “THE BODY SNATCHERS” (NOVEL BY JACK FINNEY)Release Date: 1954 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Body Snatchers (novel)Horror Crosses: Halloween; Phantoms; Memoirs of an Invisible Man; Stephen King Universe; Scream of the Banshee; Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 film); Return of the Living Dead; Boo; SharknadoNon-Horror Crosses: Airwolf; A Friend to Die For; Ben 10; Doctor WhoThe Story: In Santa Mira, California, people are starting to act different. It turns out aliens are invading by slowly replacing the inhabitants and taking their forms.Notes: Unlike the film versions, in this story, there is a happy ending and the aliens are defeated. And in fact, in the Katrina Protocol (aka Voodoo Twilight), it’s revealed that the Shop (the secret government agency from Stephen King books) sent in Ohisver van Helsing to take care of the situation. The Body Snatchers will invade again, as other crossovers will bring in the 1970s remake. This novel marks the first appearance of Santa Mira, California, a fictional town that will reappear in Halloween III: The Season of the Witch, Phantoms, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, The Dark Tower, Scream of the Banshee, the first Invasion of the Body Snatchers film adaption, Airwolf, A Friend to Die For, Ben 10, Redux of the Living Dead, Boo, Sharknado and Doctor Who: The New Adventures. In separate stories, the Doctor, Nathaniel Cade, and one of the van Helsing family have all been said to have been involved in these events behind the scenes.

MONSTERS VS. ALIENS (ANIMATED SERIES)SEASON 1 EPISODE 14 “IT CAME FROM LEVEL Z”Release Date: October 19, 2013 (Setting is late 1960s)Horror Crosses: Night of the Living DeadThe Story: When the monsters are forced to clean the rec room, they enlist a zombie to do the work for them.Notes: The zombie, with other zombies, is kept in the same facility as the monsters, and are said to have been rounded up after the incident in Pennsylvania, a reference to Night of the Living Dead. For those who have been paying attention, the events of the Night of the Living Dead have been placed in the main Horror Universe timeline and a divergent timeline where there is a zombie apocalypse. It’s always easy to determine which timeline to place a Night crossover. On the main timeline, the film happened in the 1960s and was contained, leading to the Return of the Living Dead series. In the divergent timeline, the events happened around 2008, spread on a global scale, and led to the other Romero Dead films. Thus this crossover must take place in the main timeline since they aren’t living in a Zombieland and the series is set in the 1960s.
KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER CHRONICLES “OPEN HOUSE” (SHORT STORY BY MAX ALLAN COLLINS)Release Date: 2005 (Setting is 1976)Series: Kolchak the Night StalkerHorror Crosses: Return of the Living Dead; Night of the Living DeadThe Story: Kolchak is investigating a haunted house that kills real estate agents.Notes: At one point in the story, Kolchak references a conspiracy theory about biological weapons causing a zombie outbreak in Pennsylvania. This is a reference to both Night of the Living Dead and the Return of the Dead series. That reference brings in those series of films. Return of the Dead was a sort of sequel to Night of the Living Dead, in that it states that Night of the Living Dead was a film based on true events, but in actuality, the outbreak was smaller and contained, which works better for the Horror Universe. Kolchak’s remarks towards it being a conspiracy that the government wants to hide from the government helps support a major premise of the Horror Universe regarding events depicted when cities are overrun by monsters or when alien invasions occur.

MARS ATTACKS THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS (IDW)Release Date: January 16, 2013 (Setting is 1988, during the run of the Now Comics Real Ghostbusters series)Series: Mars Attacks; GhostbustersHorror Crosses: Zombies vs. Robots; Chew; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; War of the Worlds (radio)Non-Horror Crosses: Popeye; KISS; Transformers; Miss Fury; Opus; Judge Dredd; Star Slammers; Madman; Strangers in Paradise; Rog-2000; Cerebus; RomThe Story: The Ghostbusters travel to Grover’s Mill, New Jersey to bust the ghosts of the Martians from the 1938 invasion, and encounter a different group of Martians.Notes: The IDW Real Ghostbusters seems to be set in the late 1980s based on most evidence. This story was part of a major company wide crossover, but unlike DC or Marvel, IDW has mostly licensed properties. Rather than have them coexist, they have one story take place over a range of dimensions. Thus, the Ghostbusters and War of the Worlds links are both to the Horror Universe, but all the other above listed crosses come from alternate realities in the Horror Multiverse. The premise is that these Martians invaded a series of realities. Note that of the above, only Ghostbusters, Zombies vs. Robots, Popeye, Kiss and Transformers actually had comic stories published. The other crossovers come from extra covers that had no accompanying stories, but were still considered to be valid parts of the overall invasion. The Buffy cross comes from one of those covers, for Mars Attacks Spike. This is a cross with the divergent Season 8 timeline.
DIAL M FOR MONSTER “THE DEAD DON’T DIE” (IDW)Release Date: September 24, 2004 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Criminal Macabre/Cal McDonaldHorror Crosses: Night of the Living Dead; Return of the Living DeadThe Story: Cal has to deal with zombies.Notes: Cal mentions biowarfare testing in the 1960s that led to a zombie outbreak in Pennsylvania. Though this is a reference to Night of the Living Dead, for Horror Universe purposes, we must interpret this as a reference to Return of the Living Dead. The Return of the Living Dead series presumes that the film Night of the Living Dead was based on real events, but it keeps its zombie attacks contained. Meanwhile, in a divergent timeline, Night of the Living Dead happened as depicted, but it happened in the early 21st century and led to a global outbreak. Since Cal refers to the events happening in the 1960s and because Cal does not live in a world overrun by zombies, Cal must live in the same world as the Return of the Living Dead series, the main Horror Universe timeline.
PSYCHOPOMP HALLOWE’EN SPECIAL “REDUX OF THE LIVING DEAD” (SHORT STORY BY KEVIN T. HEIM)Release Date: October 26, 2012 (Setting is May 2005)Series: Frankenstein (Kevin Heim); Return of the Living DeadHorror Crosses: Lost Boys; Body Snatchers; Kitty NorvilleNon-Horror Crosses: Frasier; G.I. JoeThe Story: A Frankenstein Monster is living in Santa Mira, California, living a nice life when he finds himself fighting a zombie outbreak. Notes: Author Kevin Heim has informed me that this monster is intentionally ambiguous as to whether it’s the original or any of the others created by Victor or another of his family. He had originally thought of his monster being the Steve Niles version, but found them not compatible, and was inspired by the image of the monster’s appearance with Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, particularly with the monster riding the motorcycle. The zombies are turned by Trioxin from the Return of the Living Dead series. More specifically, there are cyborg zombies from Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis. The Monster finds himself aided by the Frog brothers from the Lost Boys. The setting is Santa Mira. Santa Mira first appeared in Body Snatchers. See my entry for that story to see a list of the many other appearances of Santa Mira. The Monster listens to talk radio hosted by Kitty Norville. Kitty comes from a series by Carrie Vaughn. That series exists in a world where the supernatural is publically known. It must be a divergent timeline. This must be her main Horror Universe timeline counterpart. The Monster also listens to a show hosted by psychiatrist Dr. Niles Crane, who is a character from the television series Frasier. The Monster rides a Silver Mirage motorcycle, which comes from the G.I. Joe toy line.
ARMY OF DARKNESS # 1 - 4 “ARMY OF DARKNESS VS. RE-ANIMATOR” (DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: 2005 - 2006 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Evil DeadHorror Crosses: Re-Animator (Dynamite Entertainment); Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Marvel ZombiesNon-Horror Crosses: Batman; Alice in WonderlandThe Story: Ash is locked up in Arkham Asylum, a mental hospital associated with Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. His doctor is Herbert West!Notes: These events follow the comic book series Army of Darkness: Shop Till You Drop. This crossover brings a version of Re-Animator that is different than the film version of Re-Animator and the Lovecraft story it was based upon. Horror expert Kevin Heim informs “This comic book version of Dr. Herbert West has a wildly different origin story than the one in the film series, revealed in RE-ANIMATOR #0 (2006). He is also much younger than the movie version, as opposed to the Herbert West that turns up in HACK SLASH, who IS the movie version.” The West from the Lovecraft tale, the West from the 80s films and the comic book version are not the same guy, but they could be related, perhaps even a direct family lineage. Other Lovecraftian elements in this tale include Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts and the invocation of Yog Sothoth. Note the uncanny coincidence in there being an Arkham Asylum, as that is a key setting in Batman’s Gotham City as well. Batman’s Arkham Asylum is also a home for the criminally insane, founded by the Arkham family, who seemed to be cursed with madness as well. It could be that the same family were the founders of Arkham, Massachusetts. The end of the tale leads into Marvel Zombies with a brief stopover in an alternate Wonderland infested with deadites.

HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2 (FILM)Release Date: February 11, 2006 (Contemporary Setting, shortly after the prior film)Series: House of the Dead (film)Horror Crosses: Buffy the Vampire SlayerThe Story: Cuesta Verde University has a zombie, or “Hyper Sapien”, who was a survivor of the first film. They intend to study her to create a formula for immortality, but instead, there’s a zombie outbreak. Notes: Cuesta Verde University is said to be just outside Sunnydale. Since at this point, Sunnydale is now a crater, it’s a good thing they were just outside of the town. This is of course a sequel to House of the Dead.

MARVEL ZOMBIES VS. ARMY OF DARKNESS # 1 - 5 (MARVEL COMICS AND DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: May - September 2007 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Marvel Zombies; Evil DeadHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu MythosThe Story: After he is apparently killed, Ash finds himself instead transported to an alternate reality that was once filled with super-heroes and villains but has since been overrun by a zombie virus.Notes: The Marvel Zombies series takes place in an alternate version of the Marvel Comics Universe where everyone has become zombies. This story makes it clear that Ash is from a separate alternate universe that is not filled with lots of super-heroes. Officially (according to Marvel Comics), the Marvel Universe is designated Earth-616 by the Watchers. Marvel Zombies is set on Earth-2149. Marvel also says that the world that Ash comes from (which is the setting of the Dynamite Entertainment comics and the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness films) is Earth-818793. So if we are to believe Marvel’s staff and the Watchers, then Earth-818793 is the Horror Universe, and in fact, the Horror Multiverse and Marvel Multiverse are one and the same. Also of interest, in the story, Ash and some non-zombie heroes wish to obtain Doctor Doom’s copy of the Necronomicon. The Evil Dead/Army of Darkness series usually uses the Necronomicon ex Mortis, but a Kolchak story listed elsewhere in this guide reveals that the two are merely variations of the same book.

GRINDHOUSE “PLANET TERROR” (FILM)Release Date: 2007 (Contemporary Setting)Series: The films of Tarantino and RodriguezThe Story: A government bio-weapon is accidentally released, causing a zombie epidemic.Notes: Though this story appears first, it comes chronologically after Death Proof due to the appearance of the same nurse in both. Because this film ends with a worldwide epidemic of zombie takeover, we must assume this veers off into a divergent timeline. Sheriff Earl McGraw appears, along with Red Apple Cigarettes. The recent death of Jungle Janice, a local DJ, is mentioned. This occurred in Death Proof. This film has been spoofed on the Simpsons.
HACKOWEEN (WEB COMIC)Release Date: October 15, 2008 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Hack/Slash; Halloween ManHorror Crosses: Marvel ZombiesThe Story: Cassie is teleported the the strange alternate reality of Halloween Man.Notes: This story brings the world of Halloween Man into the Horror Multiverse. The heroes also fight an alternate version of the Marvel Zombies.

THE LIVING CORPSE ANNUAL # 1 “THE LEGEND OF THE JERSEY DEVIL” (ZENESCOPE ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: April 1, 2009 (Contemporary Setting)Series: The Living CorpseHorror Crosses: Hack/SlashThe Story: After the obligatory hero fight, Cassie and John Romero team up to take on the Jersey Devil and Old Mother Leeds.Notes: This story brings in the Living Corpse, a zombie who regained his intelligence and uses his cursed existence for heroic deeds.

IZOMBIE # 1 - 28 (DC COMICS’ VERTIGO)Release Date: January 1, 2010 - August 1, 2012 (Contemporary Setting)Series: iZombieHorror Crosses: Frankenstein (novel); Lovecraft’s Cthulhu MythosNon-Horror Crosses: Doc Savage; Solomon Kane; Book of Secrets; Sherlock Holmes; MadmanThe Story: Gwen Price is a zombie teenager who can pass as human. She just has to eat a human brain once a month to keep her humanity, which she does by digging up the graves of the recently deceased. She and her best friend, a ghost, fight supernatural menaces in Eugene, Oregon.Notes: The crossovers in this book bring iZombie into the Horror Universe. iZombie originally appeared in two stories in House of Mystery before gaining its own series. In the series, several Frankenstein monsters appear. Cthulhu is the behind the scenes villain of the overall story arc of the series. Doc Savage and Solomon Kane appear in flashbacks. Chris Roberson, the author of this series, throws in links to his novel Book of Secrets. Sherlock Holmes is mentioned as a real person. And there is a slight crossover with Image’s superhero Madman.

SUPERNATURAL (TELEVISION SERIES)SEASON 5 EPISODE 19 “HAMMER OF THE GODS”Release Date: April 22, 2010 (Contemporary Setting)Non-Horror Crosses: AvatarThe Story: Sam and Dean get lured to a summit of gods who are meeting to try to stop the apocalypse. Notes: There are a few things to mention here. First, the apocalypse that is going on during this season is mostly going on without the general public being aware, thus it still works in the Horror Universe main timeline. However, as this series reveals, had it not gone unstopped, it would have led to at least one divergent timeline resembling a zombie apocalypse. The Lucifer and other angels involved in this series are probably the real deals, as opposed to posers we often encounter in the Horror Universe. In this episode, Gabriel (who had previously been posing as a Trickster) is revealed to also be Loki. Perhaps that’s true, but more likely Gabriel had been posing as Loki while hiding from his Heavenly brethren. Finally, Gabriel/Loki suggests escaping from the apocalypse by running off to the planet Pandorum. This is the planet from Avatar, which also has strong connections to the Alien film series.

THE WALKING DEAD (TELEVISION SERIES)Release Date: October 31, 2010 - Present at time of writing (Contemporary Setting)Series: Walking Dead (Television)The Story: A band of survivors try to exist in a world overrun with zombies.Notes: The cross below brings in the television series. I have not found any crosses yet connecting the comic book version, which is slightly different. This series has been referenced as fictional and paid homage to numerous times in other series and in films. It has also been spoofed on Mad, Robot Chicken, and Saturday Night Live.

INFESTATION # 1 - 2 (IDW)Release Date: January - April 2011 (multiple settings)Series: Zombies vs. RobotsHorror Crosses: Ghostbusters; CVO: Covert Vampiric OperationsNon-Horror Crosses: G.I. Joe; Star Trek; Transformers; Pocket GodThe Story: In INFESTATION, a vampire/zombie hybrid with the powers of a goddess traveled through space-time to seek particular ingredients for a spell and used different types of zombies in each 'zone' to achieve her goals or to distract the locals as she achieved them herself.Notes: Infestation is the first IDW company wide crossover and in fact an intercompany crossover as well. IDW consists of mostly titles featuring licensed series. They have managed the brilliant way to still put out crossovers of all their titles by involving time and interdimensional travel. Zombies vs. Robots must be in an alternate reality within the Horror Multiverse. Ghostbusters is of course in the Horror Universe. See the entry for the IDW Ghostbusters series for more on continuity and placement. CVO is a secret government agency of vampires. It may exist in the Horror Universe, but because of the multiversal nature of this crossover story, it’s hard to tell. At the very least , it’s part of the same multiverse. G.I. Joe and Pocket God also can be placed in the Horror Multiverse, but not necessarily the Horror Universe. Incidentally, Pocket God is a comic from Ape Entertainment, thus making this not only a company wide crossover, but also an intercompany crossover. Though this cross can’t place Transformers in the Horror Universe, IDW’s later Conspiracy crossover does. My fellow researchers, who are more familiar with IDW, ensure me that this does not bring in all Transformers stories, but only certain IDW Transformers storylines. And Star Trek has already been established to exist in one of the alternate future timelines of the Horror Universe. Infestation # 1 -2 did not tell the whole story, but rather were simply the bookends. The entire story was told in the following: Infestation # 1, Star Trek: Infestation # 1 - 2, Transformers: Infestation # 1 - 2, Ghostbusters: Infestation # 1 - 2, G.I. Joe: Infestation # 1 - 2, Infestation # 2, Infestation: CVO 100-Page Spectacular, Pocket God: Infestation # 1, Zombies vs. Robots: UnderCity # 1 - 4, and Infestation: Outbreak # 1 - 4. This crossover is followed by a Cthulhu Mythos based Infestation 2 and then a Mars Attacks crossover.

HACK/SLASH MEETS ZOMBIES VS CHEERLEADERS # 1 (MOONSTONE)Release Date: June 1, 2011 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Hack/Slash; Zombies vs CheerleadersThe Story: Cassie goes undercover as a Washington State student to investigate the disappearances of several students.Notes: The school is the setting of Zombies vs Cheerleaders, an anthology series where every self contained story takes place at the same high school that is suffering from a zombie problem, that oddly stays contained to the school.

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE (FILM)Release Date: October 29, 2011 (Setting is June - December 2011)Series: Zombie ApocalypseHorror Crosses: Evil DeadThe Story: In June 2011, a new virus turns into a zombie plague. Six months later, it has become a worldwide epidemic. Notes: One of the characters had previously worked at an S-Mart, just as Ash Williams had. That links this film to the Horror Universe. But of course zombies on a global scale doesn’t conform to the main timeline, so this must be a divergent timeline. I wish I could place it in the Romero timeline, but the film is very clear about the start of the plague and the cause, both of which contradict the Romero timeline. So this is yet another alternate zombie timeline.

PAYDAY: THE HEIST (VIDEO GAME)Release Date: October 18, 2011 (Contemporary Setting -- see notes)Series: PaydayHorror Crosses: Left 4 DeadThe Story: You get to play a bad guy doing really bad things. Notes: One of the heists, only available as downloadable content, is at Mercy Hospital, a location from Left 4 Dead. Depending on how you play, there is a chance for a cameo from Bill of Left 4 Dead. The “scene” or “level” provides the origin for the Green Flu. Some speculative theorizing based on some real connecting factors by myself and the “TVCU Crew”, particularly Matt Hickman and Kevin Heim, have been formed. Left 4 Dead it would seem may be part of the same Romero zombie timeline. If that’s the case, Cabin in the Woods’ real ending may have been the lead in to the zombie timeline.

Behind it all is a secret organization, chosen to sacrifice youth to ancient gods. All of the above named crossovers have been linked in this film, and revealed to be part of this secret conspiracy. Most of the crossovers above come from the monsters and artifacts contained in the facility. While some of the monsters and artifacts are clearly from certain films above, many are based on certain types of horror films, in which case I included the more well-known of these film types. I recommend the well-researched Cabin in the Woods Wiki for a more detailed listing of the monsters and their inspirations. Note that I included in the above crossovers some monsters that only appeared in the official novelization and the official Universal Theme Park attraction tie-in. With this film, I break one of my major rules of crossover connecting. Though some of the crosses are direct crosses, like Evil Dead and Left 4 Dead, most of them are only connected because the films represent the more well-known films of the trope from which a certain monster comes. Normally, I would not count something that is “like something from”, but there is dialogue within the film that makes me break my rule. In one scene, referring to the monsters, security officer Daniel Truman says “They’re like something from a nightmare.” Lin, a head scientist, responds, “No, they’re something nightmares are from.” She goes on to explain that these monsters are the creations of the Ancient Ones, having been around since the beginning, and different cultures have told stories that interpret them in different ways. Thus, in the instance of this film, “like” is enough because of the author’s intent. And thus my love/hate relationship with Joss Whedon, for expanding the Horror Universe dramatically but making me do a lot of work to write this entry. Note that this film ends with the start of an apocalypse, so the end must veer into a divergent timeline. We must presume in the main Horror Universe, the virgin shot the fool. And if you haven’t seen the movie, that last sentence probably seems very bizarre. This film has been referenced as fictional in South Park, The Cinema Snob, Scary Movie 5, and Doc of the Dead. It is also paid homage to in Red Dawn when Chris Hemsworth and his friends once more wind up in a cabin in the woods. The film has also been spoofed in Robot Chicken and Scary Movie 5.

MONSTER BRAWL (FILM)Release Date: September 22, 2012 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Monster BrawlHorror Crosses: Frankenstein; Dracula; Night of the Living DeadThe Story: A wrestling match is held that is telecast. The combatants are all monsters.Notes: Though they are not all direct crosses, all the monsters are inspired by classic horror films. Three are more direct crosses. One of the wrestlers is another of the Frankenstein monsters. Another is a female vampire who resides in Dracula’s castle. And yet another is one of the zombies from Night of the Living Dead.

THE WALKING DEAD (TELEVISION SERIES)SEASON 3 EPISODE 15 “THIS SORROWFUL LIFE”Release Date: March 24, 2013 (Contemporary Setting)Horror Crosses: Dawn of the DeadThe Story: It’s difficult to explain the plot of this one episode without explaining all that came before. This series is very much a soap opera (with zombies) so I’ll just say that at this point there are two groups dealing with their own issues.Notes: A specific zombie appears which some refer to as the “plaid shirt zombie”. This is the same zombie seen in Dawn of the Dead. Though it would seem that can’t be based on dating, George Romero places Diary of the Dead, which has very modern technology, on the same night as Night of the Living Dead. Thus, Dawn of the Dead must take place in 2008 or later. George Romero’s zombie movies take place in a divergent timeline where the world was overrun by zombies. Though Romero himself considers his films all in the same reality (and thus I place them in the same Horror Universe divergent timeline), I refer to the specific films individually for crossover purposes. This is primarily because the films seem less like sequels and more as stand alone films. But rest assured, they still all fall within the same divergent timeline, along with the Walking Dead television series. Meanwhile, Return of the Living Dead and its sequels take place in a divergent timeline where the Night of the Living Dead occurred, but the situation was covered up and contained. It could be that the Return films take place in the main Horror Universe timeline. Though it’s not solid, it seems implied that the film Zombieland is part of the Romero timeline. In the series Supernatural, the apocalypse was triggered, which led to a divergent timeline with zombies. This timeline was prevented from occurring, but would still theoretically exist as a divergent timeline. It could be this was the Romero timeline.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL # 1 - 4 (MARVEL COMICS)Release Date: January 15 - March 5, 2014 (See notes regarding setting)Series: DeadpoolHorror Crosses: Evil Dead; Night of the Living Dead; Shaun of the Dead; The Walking DeadThe Story: Deadpool awakens to find himself the only survivor in a zombie apocalypse.Notes: Deadpool finds himself at the cabin from Evil Dead. The zombies are the Romero style and of course the title is an homage/parody of Night of the Living Dead. Army of Darkness vs. Marvel Zombies demonstrated that the Marvel Zombies universe had its own counterpart of Ash, so likely the cabin existed in the Marvel Zombies Universe as well. It does seem likely that with Deadpool being a Marvel character, this story should take place in the Marvel Zombies Universe at the start of the outbreak. However, this is actually a Horror Universe counterpart of Deadpool in the Romero Zombie divergent timeline at the start of the outbreak. At one point in the story, Deadpool ends up at Hershel Green’s farmhouse from the Walking Dead. The Walking Dead has crossovers with Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, placing it in the Romero Zombie timeline. Deadpool also ends up at the Winchester Arms from Shaun of the Dead, confirming that film in the Romero Zombie timeline.

Invasions of the Body Snatchers!

Every Thursday I am posting excerpts from the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia related to a specific series from television or film.  Today I am covering Body Snatchers.  This timeline incorporates the book and film adaptions which all take place within the same reality.

[image error][image error][image error]

It turns out aliens are invading by slowly replacing the inhabitants and taking their forms.
Notes: Unlike the film versions, in this story, there is a happy ending and the aliens are defeated.
FIRST FRONTIER (NOVEL BY DAVID A. MCINTEE)Release Date: September 1994 (Setting is 1957 and the period of the Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Bernice)Series: Doctor WhoHorror Crosses: Body SnatchersThe Story: In the United States of 1957, the Doctor and his companions must deal with cold war paranoia, an alien invasion, and a regenerated Master.Notes: This novel is part of a series that continues where the original television series ends and takes place prior to the TV movie. The Doctor mentions having been involved in the events of the Body Snatchers.
GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (FILM)Release Date: June 15, 1990 (Contemporary Setting)Series: GremlinsHorror Crosses: Body SnatchersNon-Horror Crosses: The Quatermass Experiment; InnerspaceThe Story: After the death of Mr. Wing, Gizmo ends up the property of Clamp Enterprises and is sent to their headquarters for study. Of course, Gizmo gets wet and multiplies, and the others eat after midnight and become evil gremlins, and the staff of the building must fight to contain the menace.Notes: This is of course a sequel to Gremlins, already brought in via a cross with the Howling. It should be noted that there is also a reference to the Gremlins in the film The Goonies. One of the Clamp scientists is also in possession of a pod, as seen in The Body Snatchers. One of the offices has a nameplate for a Dr. Quatermass. Considering the first film and this film and their homages, it’s likely meant to be the main character of the classic sci-fi film. Another nameplate lists the offices of Vectorscope Labs. They are the ones who created the shrinking ray in the film Innerspace. I should also note one other crossover in the film that doesn’t really count. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig appear at the beginning and end of the film, and in a more expanded segment on the DVD version. The film opens as if the viewer will be seeing a Looney Tunes short first, but when Daffy and Bugs fight over it, Bugs decides to just skip to the movie. The film also ends with a typical Porky Pig ending, also interrupted by Daffy. This framing sequence is not part of the main story, and in fact, the implication is that Bugs, Daffy and Porky also see Gremlins 2 as a fictional film from their perspective. So their appearance, not being part of the story that is canon, does not bring them into the Horror Universe. (However, see the entry for Looney Tunes: Back in Action.) This film has been referenced as fictional or paid homage to numerous times in other films and on television. It was also spoofed in a 2013 episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Jennifer Lawrence when a movie is called Hobbit 14: The New Batch in a digital short.

THE FACULTY (FILM)Release Date: December 25, 1998 (Contemporary Setting)Series: The FacultyHorror Crosses: Body Snatchers; Puppet MasterThe Story: At a high school, all the teachers are acting unusual.Notes: One of the students believes that the aliens possessing the teachers are the same from Body Snatchers and the Puppet Master, which he believes are books based on real events. This film has been referenced as fictional and paid homage to numerous times in other films and on television. It has also been spoofed in Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th, Not Another Teen Movie, and Scary Movie 3.
MONTHLY SHONEN SIRIUS “MONSTER PRINCESS” (KODANSHA)Release Date: July 2005 - April 2013 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Princess ResurrectionHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Dracula (Universal); Legend of Sleepy Hollow; Creature From the Black Lagoon; Invisible Man (Universal); Invasion of the Body Snatchers; The Fly; Evil DeadNon-Horror Crosses: Day of the Triffids; Angry Red Planet; Back to the Future; Star Trek; It Conquered the WorldThe Story: In Japan, a young man is hit by a car. As he lay there dying, he is resurrected by the princess of the Monster Realm. Not only is he brought back from death, but he becomes nearly immortal, with great power, but must serve the princess as her warrior and protector. Notes: The series has had many links to existing series, including the ones above. I admit there are probably more that I have missed. The “Monster Realm” is probably what the Watcher’s Council (from Buffy) would refer to as a Hell Dimension.
THE KATRINA PROTOCOL (NOVEL BY JEAN-MARC AND RANDY LOFFICIER)Release Date: 2007 (Setting is August 2005)Series: Club Van HelsingHorror Crosses: Dracula (Bram Stoker); White Zombie; Brother Voodoo; Child’s Play; Tales of the Zombie; Revolt of the Zombies; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; I Walked with a Zombie; Zombies on Broadway; Kolchak the Night Stalker; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; The Works of Stephen King; Charmed; The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; The Lives of the Mayfair Witches; The Body Snatchers (novel); Carnacki Ghost Finder; The Exorcist (novel); the ThingNon-Horror Crosses: Too Numerous to List. The Story: During Hurricane Katrina, Hugo Van Helsing must fight zombies raised by a voodoo priest.Notes: Hugo Van Helsing comes from the famous vampire hunting family, and his ancestors have met many famous figures of fiction, accounting for the large number of crossovers.
SCOOBY-DOO! MYSTERY INCORPORATED (ANIMATED SERIES)SEASON 1 EPISODE 16 “WHERE WALKS APHRODITE”Release Date: March 16, 2011 (Contemporary Setting -- See Series Notes)Horror Crosses: Body Snatchers; Stephen King UniverseNon-Horror Crosses: The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan; The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm ShowThe Story: Scooby and Professor Pericles work together when the town is terrorized by the goddess Aphrodite.Notes: The episode has similarities to Body Snatchers and the villain (who is not really Aphrodite) has an origin similar to that of Carrie. Suzie Chan of the Chan Clan is seen playing a game with Pebbles Flintstone. See my previous notes for those animated series in the Horror Universe.
UNNATURAL SELECTION (NOVEL BY TIM LEBBON)Release Date: November 5, 2011 (Contemporary Setting)Series: HellboyHorror Crosses: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1970s); Jaws (Film); MimicThe Story: When mythical creatures begin to appear around the globe, Hellboy and his team must investigate.Notes: In the story, Hellboy is said to have been involved in the events of the 1970s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the film version of Jaws, and Mimic. The 1950s original Body Snatchers is in the Horror Universe through several crossovers, but this story confirms that the 1970s remake is also in. It must have been a second invasion attempt. The film the Faculty implies itself to be a sequel of sorts to both Body Snatchers and the Puppet Master, implying that both Body Snatchers and the Puppet Master were the same race. The inclusion of Jaws is for the film series, but not the novel.
THE PRESIDENT’S VAMPIRE (NOVEL BY CHRISTOPHER FARNSWORTH)Release Date: March 27, 2012 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Nathaniel CadeHorror Crosses: Body SnatchersThe Story: Cade must stop the rise of an ancient evil.Notes: Cade mentions having been involved in the events of Body Snatchers. Incidentally, the Doctor (Who?) was also involved in those events behind the scenes. Since neither’s involvement has been fully detailed, one must wonder if the two have met. As previously stated, Hellboy was also involved in a body snatcher invasion, but while Cade and the Doctor were involved in the original one, Hellboy was involved in the events of the 1970s film.

Halloween: The Blog of Michael Myers

Every Thursday I am posting excerpts from the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia relating to a particular horror series from television or film.

It turns out aliens are invading by slowly replacing the inhabitants and taking their forms.
Notes: Unlike the film versions, in this story, there is a happy ending and the aliens are defeated.

HALLOWEEN (FILM)Release Date: October 25, 1978 (Contemporary Setting, on October 30 - 31)Series: HalloweenThe Story: A girl is stalked by her serial killer brother.Notes: An appearance of Michael Myers’ mask in an evidence locker in the film Bride of Chucky brings Halloween into the Horror Universe. The entire original film series (including Halloween: H2O and Halloween: Resurrection) is in the Horror Universe, but not the two film remakes.
NIGHTMARES ON ELM STREET: FREDDY KRUEGER’S SEVEN SWEETEST DREAMS “NOT JUST A JOB” (SHORT STORY BY NANCY A. COLLINS)Release Date: October 1, 1991 (Contemporary Setting, prior to the events of Freddy’s Dead)Series: A Nightmare on Elm StreetHorror Crosses: Halloween; Friday the 13th; Texas Chainsaw MassacreThe Story: Freddy mentors a kid who wants to be a serial killer.Notes: The kid checks out a book from the Springwood Library on serial killers. While it talks about real life killers, it also mentions Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, and the Sawyer family.

BRIDE OF CHUCKY (FILM)Release Date: October 16, 1998 (Contemporary Setting; one month after Child’s Play 3)Series: Child’s PlayHorror Crosses: Friday the 13th; Halloween; A Nightmare on Elm Street; Texas Chainsaw MassacreThe Story: Tiffany, the girlfriend of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, steals the doll and performs the ritual to place his soul back inside it. The plan is to find a human for Chucky to inhabit, but when the couple have a fight, Tiffany resolves not to help him. As revenge, he performs a ritual to trap her in a doll, knowing this will force her cooperation. And it does, as the two seek out a young couple to possessNotes: Chucky is brought in by the Katrina Protocol. This film occurs between Child’s Play 3 and Seed of Chucky. At the evidence locker where the Chucky doll is kept, are also the masks of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, the glove of Freddy Krueger, and the chainsaw of Leatherface. This brings Halloween into the Horror Universe. The others have already been brought in. Even though it was meant as a quick prop gag, this quick film moment connected five of the most famous modern horror icons. This film has been referenced as fictional and paid homage to numerous times in other films and on television. It was also spoofed on the Roseanne Show.

BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2 (FILM)Release Date: October 27, 2000 (Setting is November 1999)Series: Blair Witch ProjectHorror Crosses: HalloweenThe Story: A group of young tourists visits the locations from the Blair Witch Project after seeing the film. Notes: It’s tempting to link this to Charmed. Supernatural also had an episode that featured the Book of Shadows. But the truth is that the Book of Shadows exists in the real world. It was written around the late 1940s or early 1950s by Gerald Gardner and was later adopted in the Wiccan traditions. Though the Blair Witch Project was watched in theaters by the characters of this film, the premise is that the first film was found footage released in theaters as a movie. In this story, they go to the locations seen in that first film. The date setting is given in the film. The premise is that the movie is based on true events. At the location they spend the night at, the Mark of Thorn is splattered all over the walls. The Curse of Thorn was a mystical symbol seen in Halloween 5 and 6, used as the explanation for the resurrection of the deceased Michael Myers. Clearly there is a relationship between the Druid cult’s Curse of Thorn and the Blair Witch legend. I should point out that like in most modern horror, there are five young people, in an isolated location in the woods, who get picked off one by one. This film follows Shadow of the Blair Witch and is followed by The Blair Witch Project 3. This film has been referenced as fictional and paid homage to several times, including in The Bogus Witch Project, Jimmy Neutron, Six Feet Under, and Psych. It was also spoofed in Erotic Witch Project 2: Book of Seduction.
HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC # 1 - 4 (IMAGE)Release Date: June 1 - September 1, 2010 (Setting is 2004 or slightly earlier, as this is Cassie’s first hunt)Series: Hack/SlashHorror Crosses: A Nightmare on Elm Street; Halloween; Friday the 13th; SpawnThe Story: The story of Cassie’s first hunt.Notes: While researching slashers on the internet, Cassie reads of a man who kills in dreams in Ohio (Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street), a masked maniac who terrorizes a small town on Halloween (Michael Myers of Halloween), and a camp plagued for 30 years by a psycho who won’t die (Jason Vorhees of Friday the 13th). She also finds an article about Hellspawn, that includes a picture of Spawn.
BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON (FILM)Release Date: July 6, 2004 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Leslie VernonHorror Crosses: A Nightmare on Elm Street; HalloweenThe Story: A documentary crew follows the behind the scenes planning of a slasher.Notes: Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Michael Myers (Halloween) are referred to as real life serial killers.
HACK/SLASH VS. CHUCKY (DEVIL’S DUE PUBLISHING)Release Date: March 2007 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Hack/Slash; Child’s PlayHorror Crosses: A Nightmare on Elm Street; Friday the 13th; Halloween; ZataraThe Story: Cassie Hack teams up with Chucky for a mutual cause.Notes: In the story, Chucky compares himself (as being better) to Freddy (Krueger), Jason (Voorhees), and Michael (Myers). Cassie once again meets Laura Loch, who says her spells backwards just like John Zatara and his daughter Zatanna from DC Comics.
For other slasher blogs, check out the following:

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms

Each Thursday, I will be sharing excerpts from the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia related to a specific series from film or television.

TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 6: GRAND GUIGNOL “THE CHILDREN OF HERACLES” (STORY BY ROMAN LEARY)Release Date: 2010 (Setting is 1949)Series: Tales of the ShadowmenHorror Crosses: Behemoth the Sea Monster; the Magnetic Monster; Kolchak the Night Stalker; The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms; Night of the Living Dead; Phantoms; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; “The Stephen King Universe” (the works of Stephen King)Non-Horror Crosses: Nyctalope; Andromeda Strain; Quatermass; Doctor Who; Big Bad John; Six Million Dollar ManThe Story: The heroic Nyctalope is in California teaming with Professor Quatermass against the evil Agent Lord.
Notes: There are appearances of characters from Behemoth the Sea Monster, the Magnetic Monster, Kolchak the Night Stalker, Big Bad John, and the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.
THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (FILM)Release Date: June 13, 1953 (Contemporary Setting)Series: The Beast from 20,000 FathomsNon-Horror Crosses: When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth; Planet of the DinosaursThe Story: In the Arctic Circle, a nuclear bomb test causes the release of a Rhedosaurus who had been hibernating for 100 million years.
Notes: Though not the same one, a rhedosaurus also appears in prehistoric times in When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, and in the future on another planet in Planet of the Dinosaurs. Since the Rhedosaurus is not a real historical dinosaur, this is a crossover. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is brought in via a later cross in Tales of the Shadowmen. This film has been “non-cross” referenced many times in films such as Godzilla, The Giant Behemoth, and King Kong vs. Godzilla. It was also spoofed in the Naked Monster.

This was a short one, but the general rule is that a series only has to have three crosses to get chronology post.

Coming Soon: TELEVISION CROSSOVER UNIVERSE: WORLDS AND MYTHOLOGY VOLUME I

I'm doing the final edits for TELEVISION CROSSOVER UNIVERSE: WORLDS AND MYTHOLOGY VOLUME I. Thanks to Ivan Ronald SchablotskiToby O'Brien and James Bojaciuk for making notes for me. I'm in the process of shopping for someone to design a new logo for the TELEVISION CROSSOVER UNIVERSE and SUPER ENTERTAINMENT. So far, both designers I've contacted have not responded to my inquiries, which is pretty frustrating. Both designers were referred to me, too, which makes it even more frustrating. I have too high of standards for those who claim to be professional, I suppose. Christofer Nigro is writing the foreword for this volume. The book should be ready for publication in 30 days. It will feature an introduction to the TVCU, three chronologies (FLINTSTONES FOREVER: THE BEDROCK ANOMALY, THE DOCTOR WHO UNIVERSE, and A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN: CRISIS OF THE SUPER FRIENDS). And as a bonus, there will be a history of Super Comics, the Wronskiverse, and Chris Kowalski, finally bringing my most written about fictional counterpart to publication!

THE BLOG FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

THE ABC SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE “THE MAD, MAD, MAD MONSTERS” (ANIMATED FILM)Release Date: September 23, 1972 (See Notes regarding setting)Series: Mad Monster Party?Horror Crosses: Frankenstein (Universal); Frankenstein (Rankin/Bass); Dracula (Universal); Wolf Man; Mummy (Universal); Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Universal); Invisible Man (Universal); Creature from the Black Lagoon; King KongThe Story: When Dr. Henry von Frankenstein creates a bride for his monster, he decides to throw his creations a wedding.Notes: Dear God, Henry! What have you done? Playing God. Reanimating the dead. Creating a Phyllis Diller. So this is a prequel to Mad Monster Party?, which came out in 1967, so this must take place before then. See my notes for Mad Monster Party? for my notes on the individual characters involved.

SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE # 51 “THE METALUNA MUTANT VS. THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON” (DENNIS DRUKTENIS PUBLISHING)Release Date: June 2004 (Setting is 1953)Series: This Island Earth; Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: The mutant creature from the planet Metaluna comes to Earth and arrives in the Amazon where he fights the Gill-Man.Notes:The Metaluna Mutant is from This Island Earth. The Gill-Man is the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Gill Man is brought in along with most Universal horror by Return of the Wolf Man. This story brings in the 50s horror/sci-fi film This Island Earth. ‘nuff said.

THE COLGATE COMEDY HOUR (TELEVISION SERIES)SEASON 4 EPISODE 21Release Date: February 21, 1954 (Contemporary Setting)Horror Crosses: Invisible Man (Universal); Frankenstein (Universal); Creature from the Black LagoonNon-Horror Crosses: Abbott and CostelloThe Story: There are various routines and sketches, but only one is relevant. Bud and Lou have been asked to guest host the Colgate Comedy Hour. They head to the Universal prop department in preparation for the show. There, in a room with life size figures of the classic Universal monsters, Lou encounters the very real Invisible Man, Frankenstein Monster, and Creature from the Black Lagoon.Notes: Only the one sketch is part of the Horror Universe. The Invisible Man here is probably Geoffrey Radcliffe again. The Frankenstein Creature is likely the one created in Mad Monster Party. This is also probably not the same Gill-Man from the famous film, but another of the species. One might argue that these monsters are the models come to life, but this isn’t likely since there is a model of the Invisible Man in the background the whole time Lou is menaced by the real deal. Finally, there have been plenty of stories that demonstrate that these monsters exist in the same reality where the Universal films also have been made. Clearly in each instance, the events got told to somebody at Universal.

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (FILM)Release Date: March 5, 1954 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: A geology expedition in the Amazon uncovers the Gill-Man, the missing link between sea creatures and mammals. Things don’t go well.Notes: The Gill-Man is brought in by Jeff Rovin’s Return of the Wolf Man. He is probably the last of the famous classic Universal monsters to be introduced. He returns in two official sequels after this: Revenge of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us. A remake is in development at the time of this writing. This film, due to its popularity, has been referenced and spoofed many times over the years.

REVENGE OF THE CREATURE (FILM)Release Date: May 11, 1955 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: The Gill-Man has been shot (a lot) by bullets. But don’t they always survive? He is captured and brought to Florida to be studied, and it doesn’t go well.Notes: This film follows Creature from the Black Lagoon and is followed by one more sequel, The Creature Walks Among Us, in 1956. This film has been “non-cross” referenced in films such as Jaws and Back to the Future Part III. It was also spoofed in the Naked Monster.

MAD MONSTER PARTY? (ANIMATED FILM)Release Date: March 8, 1967Series: Mad Monster Party?Horror Crosses: Frankenstein (Rankin/Bass); Dracula (Rankin/Bass); Invisible Man (Universal); Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde (Universal); Frankenstein (Universal); Hunchback of Notre Dame (Universal); Mummy (Universal); Wolf Man; Creature from the Black Lagoon; King KongThe Story: Dr. Boris Frankenstein summons the members of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters to announce he has come up with the final solution for world destruction. He also invites his nephew, who is oblivious of his Frankenstein heritage, because Boris plans on passing everything on to him. Notes: This is a fun homage to the Universal monsters, even with putting up with Phyllis Diller as the Bride of Frankenstein. However, it’s unlikely any of the monsters here can really be the original versions from the classic movies. Dr. Frankenstein here is Dr. Boris Frankenstein, and at least the storyline acknowledges the family legacy theory. The story also names him as the creator of this monster and bride. However, in the prequel, The Mad, Mad, Mad Monsters, it is a Henry von Frankenstein who is shown to have created them. This is not the same Henry from the 1931 Universal film. Henry and Boris seem identical, and may be twins, or perhaps the same person (Henry Boris von Frankenstein). This helps explain the appearances of a Universal style monster (and sometimes bride) during the period of 1948 - 1998 when the actual Universal Monster is trapped in La Mirada. The werewolf is unnamed here, but in the prequel is named Ron Chanley , a tribute to the actor who played Lawrence Talbot, Lon Chaney. The Invisible Man here could be Geoffrey Radcliffe, though if so, he’d be a bit older (though sure doesn’t look it). In the prequel, he is shown to have settled down and has an invisible family. The Doctor Jekyll here is likely one of the many of the Jekyll family over the years to continue the research of the Hyde formula. This mummy isn’t Imhotep or Kharis, but it might be Klaris. Or it may just be another mummy. The Gill Man is likely another of the same species, and not the same from Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Hunchback also can’t possibly be the original. And the giant ape referred to as “It” can’t be the late King Kong, but is likely another of the same species. In the prequel, he is named Modzoola. Dracula is the only one who could be the same, if not for being so damn goofy. Let’s call this a soul clone. The prequel shows that this Dracula has a son. All the monsters die at the end, but that’s never stopped a good monster before from making a comeback. This film has been “non-cross” referenced in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Cleavagefield, and Hewy’s Animated Movie Reviews.

THE MONSTER SQUAD (FILM)Release Date: 1987 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Monster SquadHorror Crosses: Dracula (Universal); Frankenstein (Universal); Wolf Man (Universal); Mummy (Universal); Creature from the Black Lagoon (Universal); Dracula (novel) [see Notes for all]Non-Horror Crosses: Back to the FutureThe Story: In 1887, Van Helsing uses an amulet to try to banish Dracula into the void. He failed. Exactly 100 years later the talisman ends up in an unnamed town that appears to be Hill Valley, California. So does Van Helsing’s notebook, that is needed to perform the ritual again. A group of kids must work together to stop Dracula, who has come to town as well, with a group of monster lackeys, to perform his own ritual and bring Hell on Earth, with him as ruler.Notes: The monsters are all meant to be the Universal monsters (based on the director commentary). This was also the case with Van Helsing, and as with Van Helsing, we have to assume they are not. But at least in the case of this film, we are closer to the original film versions. The Dracula of this film uses the alias Alucard, as did the Dracula from Son of Dracula. Thus, I presume that this is the same vampire from that film, rather than Armand Tesla. The Frankenstein Creature of this film can’t be the one from the Universal series, who is in suspended animation in La Mirada, Florida at this time. But there certainly have been plenty of other creatures out there created by the Frankenstein family. The Wolf Man of this film claims to be Larry Talbot, but since the Universal Wolf Man is also in suspended animation in La Mirada, this must be his son, Larry Talbot Junior. The Mummy here likely isn’t Kharis, but it might be Klaris who did survive the events of Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy as revealed in Return of the Wolf Man. On the other hand, the Gill-Man present could be the same from the original films, or at least the same species. The Van Helsing in this film only appears in an 1887 scene. It may be Abraham from Bram Stoker’s novel. The downtown set used for the town setting is the same used for Back to the Future. There’s nothing to contradict it indeed being Hill Valley. That would bring the Back to the Future trilogy into the Horror Universe. A remake of this film is in development at this writing. This film has been referenced as fiction or paid homage to in numerous other films and on television.

SCOOBY-DOO AND THE GHOUL SCHOOL (ANIMATED FILM)Release Date: February 1988 (Contemporary Setting, maybe….see Notes)Series: Scooby-Doo (1980s animated film series)Horror Crosses: Dracula (Hanna-Barbera); Frankenstein (Hanna-Barbera); Creature From the Black Lagoon; GodzillaThe Story: Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy take jobs as coaches at an all-girls school that turns out to be an all-girl monsters school.Notes: Each Scooby series is taken separately for inclusion. The crosses with Godzilla and the Creature from the Black Lagoon bring in not only the 80s Scooby movies, but also the Hanna-Barbera versions of Dracula and Frankenstein. If this film were set in the time it aired, 1988, Shaggy would be in his late 30s by this point and Scooby and Scrappy would be fairly old, especially for dogs. (And with Scrappy still claiming to be a puppy.) Either the trio are immortal, or this story actually takes place in the 1970s, at a point where Shaggy is still in his early to mid 20s. As for explaining Scooby and Scrappy, see my notes on Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! Still, this does not explain why people aren’t surprised when they encounter talking animals. I could blame it on Sunnydale-itus, the phenomenon where rational people tend to dismiss anything out of the ordinary, but this solution still leaves me slightly unsatisfied. The Dracula and Frankenstein Monster here are the Hanna-Barbera versions, likely another soul clone and copycat creation, respectively. Their daughters are on the school’s volleyball team. At the end of the film, two new students are females from the same species as both the Gill-Man (Creature from the Black Lagoon) and Godzilla. Note that there must be more than one of the Gill-Man species, and in fact, there are in-story references that state that the Gill-Man is the same as the Deep Ones of Innsmouth and the Silurians from Doctor Who. As for Godzilla, it would seem that there is also more than one of this species. In fact, in the classic series of films, it’s stated that the Godzilla from the original film was destroyed, and the one from the rest of the films was a second one. This film follows Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers and is followed by A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. This film is referenced in the 2012 Hotel Transylvania. In both animated films, the werewolf’s daughter in named Winnie.

ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES (ANIMATED SERIES)SEASON 1 EPISODE 3 “TOMATOES FROM THE BLACK LAGOON”Release Date: September 22, 1990 (Contemporary Setting)Horror Crosses: Creature from the Black LagoonNon-Horror Crosses: Hulk (Comic)The Story: This week’s adventure takes the heroes (and villains) to the Black Lagoon, and there is an encounter with the Hulk at the airport. Notes: This cross with Creature from the Black Lagoon brings the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes films and cartoon into the Horror Universe. It also brings the comic book version of the Hulk in. The TV version is brought in via a crossover with Kolchak.

RETURN OF THE WOLF MAN (NOVEL BY JEFF ROVIN)Release Date: 1998 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Wolf Man (Universal)Horror Crosses: Frankenstein (Universal); Dracula (Universal); White Zombie; The Deadly Mantis; The Monolith Monsters; Werewolf of London; Creature from the Black Lagoon; Man Made Monster; The Mad Monster; Night Key; Invisible Man (Universal); Mummy (Universal)Non-Horror Crosses: Abbott and CostelloThe Story: Caroline Cooke inherits a castle in LaMirada, Florida. The town ends up soon being threatened by a monster as Larry Talbot has returned, after having been frozen in suspended animation for 50 years.Notes: This novel brings together pretty much all of Universal Horror into the Horror Universe, and is a sequel to Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein. Both Talbot and the Frankenstein monster had been in suspended animation in LaMirada for the past 50 years, negating the possibility of any Talbot or Monster appearances being related to the Universal characters during that time frame.

SECTION ZERO (GORILLA COMICS)Release Date: June - September 2000Series: Section ZeroHorror Crosses: Creature from the Black LagoonNon-Horror Crosses: The Lost World; Doc Savage; X-FilesThe Story: Section Zero is a United Nations created team that has existed since the1960s. It’s mission is to investigate things that all governments are unified in denying, such as UFOs, monsters, lost civilizations, time travel, ancient gods, prehistoric survivors, and you get the picture. In fact, the United Nations does not recognize the existence of the team itself. Notes: The team leader is Titania “Doc” Challenger, implied granddaughter of Professor Challenger from the lost World. Her ex-husband and teammate is Sam Wildman. Another team member is a grey alien. Though grey aliens are part of 20th century UFO lore, at the time of this series, they were regularly featured as a part of the ongoing storylines of the X-Files. The final member is a Gill-Man, of the same species as that seen in the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
DISNEY ADVENTURES # 200008 “SOCIETY OF HORRORS: THE WRAITH NEXT DOOR” (DISNEY)Release Date: August 1, 2000 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Society of HorrorsHorror Crosses: Creature from the Black Lagoon; Legend of Sleepy Hollow; Dracula (Universal); Frankenstein (Universal); Wolf Man; Mummy (Universal)Non-Horror Crosses: You Can’t Do That On TelevisionThe Story: A Gill-Man, a headless horseman, and an alien are roommates, who have to deal with a wraith neighbor. Notes: The monster roommates have portraits of the Universal versions of Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy hanging in their apartment. They also have green slime, like that used on Nickelodeon shows but first introduced on You Can’t Do That On Television.

BONEYARD # 1 - 28 (NBM)Release Date: 2001 - 2009 (Contemporary Setting)Series: BoneyardHorror Crosses: Frankenstein (Boneyard); Creature from the Black Lagoon; The Raven; The Screwtape Letters; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Dracula (novel); Evil Dead; Frankenstein (novel); The Wolf Man; Zatanna; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Friday the 13th; Hellboy (comics); King Ghidorah; Mothra; Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!Non-Horror Crosses: The TempestThe Story: Michael Paris inherits a graveyard inhabited by friendly monsters. Hilarity and adventure ensue.Notes: One of the inhabitants is Brutus, who is a creature of the Frankenstein model. Brutus’ wife is a Gill-Woman named Nessie. Edgar is a raven who claims to have been the inspiration for Edgar Allan Poe’s story. The Boneyard has its own elected official, Mayor Wormwood. Mayor Wormwood is supposed to be Satan, but this Satan is kind of an idiot. I’ve stated elsewhere in this guide that not all appearances of the devil are the same guy. The name carries weight, and so it seems that many lesser demons may pose as the top dog. In the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, Wormwood is a poor excuse for a demon who is eaten by his uncle. But of course, what happens when a demon dies? They return to Hell. So this may be the same Wormwood. The vampire named Abby seems to be of the vampiric variety seen on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Remember that in the Horror Universe, there are several strains of the “vampire virus”, which create varying types of vampires with different traits, strengths and weaknesses. Abby refers to Michael as her “Renfield”. That could be a pop culture reference, but considering the number of other horror crosses, and that Dracula is real in the Horror Universe, I’m inclined to count it. There are “Xandorian” demons which I believe to be an intentional misspelling of Kandorian demons from the Evil Dead series. Somebody refers to the original Dr. Frankenstein. That same person makes a reference to that guy with the stick which may be Larry Talbot, whose cane is famous. At a bar is Zatanna Zatara and a Gill-Man. An Old One appears, who is friendly! His name is Haz’aroth, which may be an intentional misspelling of Azathoth, but I’m not sure Azathoth would be so nice. Perhaps he’s a nicer guy around other monsters. Abby is hired by the government to stop a slasher at a summer camp called Camp Waterlake. Though the slasher turns out to really be Lilith, she has taken the form of Jason Voorhees. This isn’t the first time Camp Crystal Lake has changed its name. In the film series, it did so to try to avoid the bad reputation it has gained. When Abby has to attend a banquet for supernatural beings, she takes Michael as her date. The waiter is Ariel from Shakespeare’s the Tempest. Hellboy is in attendance. So are King Ghidorah and Mothra. The Space Kook is also there. Though the Space Kook was just a man in a mask in Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, most of those villains took on the identities of figures from legends and folklore. So this must be the real Space Kook that inspired the man in the mask who was exposed by Mystery, Inc.

THE LOST CULT (NOVEL BY E.E. KNIGHT)Release Date: August 2004 (Setting is after the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq)Series: Tomb RaiderHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Creature from the Black LagoonNon-Horror Crosses: Sherlock HolmesThe Story: Lara Croft discovers the existence of the Deep Ones.Notes: This Lovecraftian tale brings Lara Croft into the Horror Universe. The Deep Ones are the “fish men” of Innsmouth. The Deep Ones are said to be led by Uhluhtc. (Spell it backwards.) Lara also consults Von Junst’s Unaussprechlichen Kulten. Von Junst is likely a misspelling of Von Juntz. This book is also from Lovecraftian lore. The Deep Ones are said to resemble the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It’s possible that they are the same species or a closely related species. Lara also quotes from Sherlock Holmes. Since Holmes’ existence is concrete in the Horror Universe, she is clearly quoting a real historical figure, rather than a fictional character.
Scary Monsters Magazine #53
SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE # 53 “THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON VS. THE WOLF MAN” (DENNIS DRUKTENIS PUBLISHING)Release Date: January 2005 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Creature from the Black Lagoon; the Wolf Man (Universal)Horror Crosses: Werewolf of LondonThe Story: Larry Talbot continues to search for a cure. After failing to find any ancestors of Wilfred Glendon, he heads to the amazon and encounters the Gill-Man.Notes: The Gill-Man of this story may be the original Creature from the Black Lagoon, or another of the species. This Larry Talbot is the original Wolf Man, not one of his sons, since this occurs after Return of the Wolf Man. Wilfred Glendon was the Werewolf of London.

FRANKENSTEIN VS. THE CREATURE FROM BLOOD COVE (FILM)Release Date: October 4, 2005 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Frankenstein (Universal); Creature from the Black LagoonHorror Crosses: ThemThe Story: A mad scientist creates a gill-man and finds one of Frankenstein’s creations. His goal is to use both in the war on terror.Notes: This is an homage to the Universal films. Though there’s no actual connection to the Creature from the Black Lagoon directly, the creature created is indeed a Gill-Man in almost every way. Because this is a Universal style film, I consider this a cross with the Universal Frankenstein. This may be the original monster, considering his revival in 1998. It certainly can’t be the alternate Universal version created by Boris Frankenstein (as seen in Mad, Mad, Mad Monsters). He was sucked into a Hell dimension in Monster Squad. There is a mention of the giant ants in the Mojave.

MEAN STREETS “THE DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES” (SHORT STORY BY SIMON GREEN)Release Date: January 6, 2009 (Contemporary Setting)Series: NightsideHorror Crosses: Stephen King Universe; Creature from the Black Lagoon; Frankenstein (See Notes); Doctor Jekyll and Mister HydeNon-Horror Crosses: Green Hornet; Maltese Falcon; Bran Mak MornThe Story: Private investigator John Taylor takes a case for a woman who can’t remember the past 24 hours.Notes: Seen on the streets of the Nightside are the Green Hornet’s Black Beauty driven by Kato and Stephen King’s Christine, with a deceased fellow behind the wheel. If there is one place where the Horror Multiverse may connect and overlap, it’s the strange place known as the Nightside, located within London, yet much larger than London. It is a place where magic and advanced technology exist. Numerous divergent timelines seem to coexist and time anomalies are a regular occurrence. This cross with the Stephen King Universe brings the Nightside series into the Horror Universe. At the bar called Strangefellows is a Creature from the Black Lagoon. One of Frankenstein’s female creations appears at the bar as well. As noted in a previous Nightside entry, Taylor has encountered numerous members of the Frankenstein family and their creations, so this cross could be with any of the Frankenstein versions previously seen to exist in the Horror Universe. Drug dealer Harry Fabulous is still selling a variation of the Hyde formula as seen in previous Nightside stories. In the story, John Taylor makes a comment that he doesn’t chase the Maltese Falcon. The Falcon gets mentioned in several Nightside stories. And apparently there is some kind of Nightside sex thing that involves the Worms of the Earth, first seen in the Bran Mak Morn story by Robert E. Howard. Bran Mak Morn is another of Howard’s sword and sorcery heroes. Other of Howards warriors, such as Conan and Kull, also exist in the Horror Universe’s past.

HOUSE OF THE WOLF MAN (FILM)Release Date: 2009 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Wolf Man (Universal)Horror Crosses: Frankenstein (Universal); Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Dracula (Universal); Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: A mad scientist invites five guests to his home to hold a contest to see who will inherit his estate by a process of deadly elimination. Notes: This film was made as an homage to the classic Universal films and acts as a sequel to the series. The mad scientist is Dr. Bela Reinhardt, but that’s his assumed name. He is really Bela Frankenstein, the son of Peter Frankenstein (from Ghost of Frankenstein) and a gypsy girl who was sister to Bela Blasko, the werewolf who bit and turned Larry Talbot. Reinhardt possesses Larry Talbot’s famous wolf’s head cane. The poem that beings “Even a man who’s pure of heart…” is recited. A Frankenstein monster is released in the home during the contest, probably a new creation of Reinhardt based on family notes. The lab contains one of Dr. Pretorius’ homunculi from Bride of Frankenstein. The library contains a copy of Alhazred’s Alchemy of Transmutation. This may be a reference to the Mad Arab who also authored the Necronomicon. Dracula and his brides also show up. The lab also contains a fossilized hand of a gill-man.

JUST ANOTHER JUDGEMENT DAY (NOVEL BY SIMON R. GREEN)Release Date: December 29, 2009 (Contemporary Setting, likely just after The Unnatural Inquirer)Series: NightsideHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Frankenstein (see Notes); Frankenstein (all of them, every version); The Picture of Dorian Gray; Shoggoth’s Old Peculiar; Them!; Creature from the Black Lagoon; Doctor Jekyll and Mister HydeNon-Horror Crosses: Doctor Who; Secret Histories; Doctor Syn; Solomon Kane; Deathstalker; BeowulfThe Story: The Walking Man is the embodiment of the wrath of God and he has come to the Nightside. Nightside’s new authorities hire John Taylor to stop him.Notes: The Walking Man is shown to be so powerful that he can easily destroy a Lovecraftian horror while walking down the street without even slowing down. (I guess God trumps Cthulhu after all.) Shoggoth’s Old and Very Peculiar appears again. Zhang the Mystic, a member of the Adventurer’s Club, is said to have battled Elder Gods. John Taylor and Suzie Shooter fight an evil Victor Frankenstein from a mirror universe. This is not the same Victor Frankenstein from the main Horror Universe timeline. Taylor mentions that Frankenstein is a common name in the Nightside and that he has encountered many of Victor’s descendents and their creations. This supports my theory (adapted from the theories of Mark Brown and Chuck Loridians) that many of the Frankensteins and monsters seen in fiction are Victor’s family and their numerous monsters, rather than always being the same Victor Frankenstein and one single monster. The mirror Victor finds a way to control the citizens of the Nightside by learning that the actions of people in one reality dictates the actions of their doppelgangers. Taylor compares this to Dorian Gray’s picture, where Dorian’s actions are reflected within the portrait. The sewers of the Nightside have giant ants, like those from the film Them! The Adventurer’s Club has a stuffed Creature from the Black Lagoon. Jacqueline Hyde is at the Adventurer’s Club. In the previous Nightside novel, she was mentioned in the Unnatural Inquirer as being in love with her male Hyde alter ego. There is an old Victorian drinking song called “Dr. Jekyll’s Locum”. One of Suzie’s neighbors is Sarah Kingdom, a character who first appeared on Doctor Who during the first Doctor’s run. Janissary Jane, a character from Green’s Secret Histories, appears at the Adventurer’s Club. The Walking Man mentions the Drood family from Secret Histories. Past members of the Adventurer’s Club include Dr. Syn, Salvation Kane (likely meant to be Solomon Kane) and Owen Deathstalker from Green’s futuristic sci-fi Deathstalker series. At a gun shop is the Darkvoid Device, also from the Deathstalker series. (Remember that the Nightside exists outside normal time and space.) The Adventurer’s Club also has an arm of Grendel, who was slain by Beowulf.

WITCH DOCTOR (SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: 2011 - Ongoing at time of writing (Contemporary Setting)Series: Witch DoctorHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: Dr. Vincent Morrow is a scientist who views the supernatural in scientific terms.Notes: There are a lot of references to Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, viewing them as natural and scientific, though perhaps alien and beyond known science. This is compatible with several stories that occur within the Horror Universe that view the supernatural in scientific terms. This is another story that conflates the Deep Ones of Lovecraft with the Gill-Men of Creature from the Black Lagoon.

HACK/SLASH/EVA: MONSTER’S BALL (DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: May 25 - November 2, 2011 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Hack/Slash; Eva, Daughter of DraculaHorror Crosses: Frankenstein (Universal); Creature from the Black LagoonThe Story: When Dr. Pretorius teams with Mary Shelley Lovecraft to destroy reality, monster hunters Cassie Hack and Eva must team-up.Notes: Hack/Slash and Eva are already independently brought into the Horror Universe. Dr. Pretorius is from Universal’s Bride of Frankenstein. Pretorius has a Gill-Man contained in his lair. There is no indication that Mary Shelley Lovecraft has any real connection to Frankenstein or Lovecraft despite the connotation created by the name.

LEGION OF MONSTERS # 1 - 4 (MARVEL COMICS)Release Date: October 12, 2011 - January 12, 2012 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Legion of MonstersHorror Crosses: Morbius the Living Vampire; Bloodstone; The Living Mummy; Creature from the Black Lagoon; Werewolf by Night; Tomb of Dracula; Son of Satan; Buffy the Vampire SlayerThe Story: Elsa Bloodstone learns that not all monsters are evil and that some fight for good.Notes: The Legion of Monsters was a team of Marvel’s monsters that first appeared in 1976. The original team members were Morbius, Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, and Man-Thing. The current team members from this series are Morbius, Bloodstone, the Living Mummy, Manphibian, and Werewolf by Night. Morbius originated as an enemy of Spider-Man. Elsa Bloodstone was previously brought into the Horror Universe in the Bloodstone mini-series. The Living Mummy was also brought in via the Bloodstone mini-series. Manphibian originated from the original Legion of Monsters series, as Marvel’s take on the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The Manphibian is an alien, but so may be the Gill-Man, who was conflated with the Silurians of Doctor Who in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Jack Russell is the Werewolf by Night, who has many previously established Horror Universe crossovers. Dracula also appears, and is of course the Marvel version from Tomb of Dracula. Also appearing is Damon Hellstrom from Marvel’s Son of Satan. This story brings Son of Satan into the Horror Universe. Finally, and the only reason this gets an entry, Jack Russell refers to a doorway to Hell as a Hellmouth, a term that originated on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A HARD DAY’S KNIGHT (NOVEL BY SIMON R. GREEN)Release Date: December 27, 2011 (Contemporary Setting, immediately after the Good, the Bad, and the Uncanny)Series: NightsideHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Creature from the Black Lagoon; King in Yellow; Hawk & Fisher; 1408; Frankenstein (all of them); The Enquiries of Doctor Eszterhazy; The Wicker ManNon-Horror Crosses: Secret Histories; Shadows Fall; The Door in the Wall; The Teletubbies (no, you didn’t misread); Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser; Alice in Wonderland; Doctor WhoThe Story: John Taylor receives the legendary Excalibur in the mail and decides to deliver it to the descendants of the original Knights of the Round Table who reside in London. Along the way, Taylor finds himself in a dark mirror universe where England is called Albion and Merlin chose a different path and became the Anti-Christ.Notes: Like most of the Nightside stories, this one is loaded with numerous Lovecraft references. Taylor passes a sushi stall run by “something from a black lagoon”. There is graffiti in the Nightside that includes the Yellow Sign from the King in Yellow. The train runs to Haven from Green’s Hawk & Fisher series. Hawk and Fisher themselves also appear in the story. In the mirror reality, King Arthur hides in room 1408 of the castle. At a bazaar, there is tattooing using Frankenstein blood. I’m not sure if this means the blood of a Frankenstein or a Frankenstein monster. Previous Nightside stories have confirmed that many of the Frankenstein family have created numerous monsters, thus confirming one of the major crossover connection rules of the Horror Universe. In the mirror reality of Albion, the streets are lined with Wicker Men filled with dead men. Green again makes numerous references to his Secret Histories series. The Nightside train also runs to Shadows Fall, as also seen in previous Nightside stories. Shadows Fall is another Green series. The only entrance to the castle of the knights is a green door, which may be a reference to H.G. Wells’ The Door in the Wall, in which a green door is a portal to a magical garden. At the bar called Strangefellows, there are four fuzzy little creatures with working televisions implanted in the stomachs. These would be the Teletubbies. They are said to be post-nuclear apocalypse mutants. Thus, we may assume that the Teletubbies exists in one possible alternate timeline of the Horror Universe. The Nightside exists outside of time and space, so it’s easy for visitors from other time periods to show up. John and his partner Suzie pass the Bazaar of the Bizarre from the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series. John and Suzie visit the dormouse. The dormouse has several doors that work as portals to other places, including Shadows Fall and Carcosa. Carcosa is a city that once existed. It is mentioned in the King in Yellow, though it’s first literary appearance was in Ambrose Bierce’s 1891 “An Inhabitant of Carcosa”. The fictional city may have been inspired by a real city, Carcassonne (Carcaso in Latin), that was in medieval France. There is also a door to Scytha-Pannonia-Transbalkania from Avram Davidson’s The Enquiries of Dr. Eszterhazy. Taylor mentions that his portable timeslip only works in time and space but not dimension. He adds that it’s not a TARDIS.

CABIN IN THE WOODS (FILM)Release Date: April 13, 2012 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Cabin in the WoodsHorror Crosses: Alien; Half-Life; Evil Dead; Poltergeist; Frankenstein (Universal); Child’s Play; Creature from the Black Lagoon; Corpse Bride; Killer Klowns from Outer Space; Stephen King Universe; Killjoy; Devil’s Rejects; Clownhouse; Drive Thru; Funhouse; Amusement; Circus of Fear; Clown Camp; Demonic Toys; Demons; Night of the Demons; Supernatural; Charmed; Gremlins; Ghoulies; Creeps; Troll; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Frankenstein (novel); Dr. Giggles; The Human Centipede; House on Haunted Hill; The Dead Pit; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; The Strangers; Underworld; Attack of the 50 Foot Woman; Troll Hunter; Anaconda; Python; Mega Snake; Snakes on a Plane; Resident Evil; Hellraiser; Cannibal Holocaust; Creepshow; Legend of Sleepy Hollow; Attack of the Jack-O-Lanterns; Pumpkinhead; Frankenfish; The Mummy!

JIM BUTCHER’S DRESDEN FILES: GHOUL GOBLIN # 1 - 6 (DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT)Release Date: January 1 - August 2013 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Dresden FilesHorror Crosses: Creature From the Black LagoonThe Story: Dresden heads to Louisiana to help the Talbot family, who suffer from a family curse.Notes: The story opens with Dresden fighting a creature who had indeed migrated from the Black Lagoon. The Talbots of this story seem to have no relationship to Larry.

PROPERTY OF A LADY FAIRE: A SECRET HISTORIES NOVEL (NOVEL BY SIMON R. GREEN) Release Date: June 3, 2014 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Secret HistoriesHorror Crosses: Nightside; Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Frankenstein (novel); Frankenstein (Simon R. Green); Judge Pursuivant; Frankenstein (Universal); Creature from the Black LagoonNon-Horror Crosses: Nun Areala; Excalibur (Marvel); Alice in Wonderland; An Inhabitant of Carcosa; The Time MachineThe Story: Eddie searches for Lady Faire, an omnisexual creature who was one of the final creations of Victor Frankenstein.Notes: Most of the crosses here are the same crosses already discussed from previous Nightside and Secret Histories novels by Green. Lady Faire is an original version of the Frankenstein monster created by Green. One character is a graduate of the Deep School, from the Judge Pursuivant story “The Letters of Cold Fire”. At the Vatican, Eddie is pursued by warrior nuns, which may be a reference to Nun Areala.

Cat People

Every Thursday I am posting excerpts from the Horror Crossover Encyclopedia focusing on a television or film series.  Today we are covering Cat People.

ANNO DRACULA (SERIES BY KIM NEWMAN)Release Date: 1992 - 2013 (so far) [Setting is 1888 -1991 (so far)]Series: Anno DraculaHorror Crosses: Dracula (novel); Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Invisible Man (novel); The Island of Doctor Moreau; The Vampyre; Varney the Vampire; The Soft Whisper of the Dead; They Thirst; Hotel Transylvania; The Black Castle; The Vampire Tapestry; Stephen King Universe; Carmilla; Good Lady Ducayne; The Tomb of Sarah; Ken’s Mystery; The Mysterious Stranger (story); The True Story of a Vampire; Carnacki Ghost Finder; Black Sabbath; The Picture of Dorian Gray; Interview with a Vampire (Anne Rice Vampire Lestat series); The Werewolves of London (Brian Stableford); Count Yorga; The Fearless Vampire Killers; Brides of Dracula; Vampire Circus; Dracula (Universal); Dark Shadows; El Vampiro; Black Sunday; Martin (George A. Romero film); Kolchak the Night Stalker; Blacula; Nosferatu; Kiss of the Vampire; Mr. Vampire; Blood of the Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Dracula (Hammer); Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Averoigne; Grave of the Vampire/Seed of Terror; Hellraiser; Alraune; The Black Cat (film); Lemora: A Child’s Tale of the Supernatural; The Vampire Thrills; Faustine; Near Dark; Forever Knight; Fright Night; The House of Dracula (novel by R. The Story: In 1888, during the events of Bram Stoker’s novel, events diverge and Dracula marries Queen Victoria, causing a major alteration in the socio-political world for the next 125 years and beyond.
Notes: This is a divergent timeline, but not a parallel universe.
TALES OF THE SHADOWMEN VOLUME 1: THE MODERN BABYLON and VOLUME 2: GENTLEMEN OF THE NIGHT “THE WEREWOLF OF RUTHERFORD GRANGE” (SHORT STORY BY G.L. GICK)Release Date: 2005 (Setting is 1911)Series: Tales of the ShadowmenHorror Crosses: Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos; Dracula (novel); Shadowmancer; Cat People; Horror Express; Werewolf of Paris; The Catman of Paris; Phantom of the Opera (novel); The Wolf in the Garden; Nanny and the Professor; Carnacki Ghost Finder; Sar DubnotalNon-Horror Crosses: See NotesThe Story: Famed detective Harry Dickson shares a story of one of his earliest cases when he was still an assistant to Sexton Blake and Sherlock Holmes. In this tale, Dickson finds himself being assigned to a security detail for a conference, but gets himself involved in dealing with a supernatural menace, something he strongly disbelieves even as he is experiencing it. And even then, things are never quite what they seem.Notes: This is an excellent tale full of crossovers, and with so many surprises and twists to keep the reader captivated.
THE SEVENTH VICTIM (FILM)Release Date: 1943 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Cat PeopleThe Story: Psychiatrist Louis Judd rescues a woman from a Satanic cult.Notes: No Cat People appear in this film, but the above mentioned psychiatrist appears next in Cat People. Thus I’ve lumped this film into the Cat People series, even though this comes first, because Cat People has so many other crossovers.
CAT PEOPLE (FILM)Release Date: 1942 (Contemporary Setting, but takes place after the Seventh Victim)Series: Cat PeopleThe Story: A woman thinks that she is a Werecat.
Notes: The psychiatrist in this film is Dr. Louis Judd. He dies in this film. The Seventh Victim released in 1943 also features Dr. Judd, so even though it is made and released after Cat People, it must have taken place chronologically before this film. Cat People has a 1944 sequel called The Curse of the Cat People, and is referenced in several future stories that provide crossover goodness. The film was remade in 1982. The film has had several “non-cross” references in such films as Final Destination.
CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (FILM)Release Date: 1944 (Contemporary Setting)Series: Cat PeopleThe Story: In this sequel to Cat People, the ghost of Irena appears, or is it really her still alive, or is she just an illusion of a mentally ill child? Notes: Honestly, I don’t know the answer. This film is a sequel to 1942’s Cat People.
