“Grandfather believes they were sent by Durmad,” Dylon said, when Arden and Glynna met privately with him that evening, before thefestivities started. They had seen him walking through the gardens and hurriedfrom Arden’s room to intercept him. “There was warning. An old seer Grandfathervisited several times a year warned him that black clouds were following him,and he should take a different route home. We tried, but then a boy came fromthe next village, begging us to come, there had been a dreadful accident at themill. The brigands attacked us in a valley just outside the village, rollinghuge boulders down on us, separating us. Grandfather broke a leg and severalribs, and he was bleeding badly enough, he lost consciousness. When help came…” He shuddered and his eyes were shadowed while his face went pale.

“You’ve never seen the vengeance meted out on those who violatethe laws of magic and charity, have you?” Glynna asked. She rested a hand onhis shoulder, lightly enough it didn’t go through him.

“Grandfather told me such things have happened.” Dylon shook hishead and his throat worked, as if he fought sickness. “Birds dove down from thesky and from the trees, and the trees themselves twisted and lashed out at themen, and I thought for a moment they would uproot themselves and come running. And there was a bear—” He caught his breath. “Those men didn’t seem to noticeas the bear ripped into them and the animals overpowered them and they werebeaten unconscious. And they died. They shouldn’t have died. There was moremagic at work, killing them, to keep them from betraying who sent them. Andwhen we asked at the village, no one sent for us. The boy wasn’t one of theirs.”

“That wouldn’t be wise,” Dylon hurried to say, as King Alfredsmiled and nodded. “If the roads between kingdoms aren’t safe for a reveredhealer, who should be sacrosanct, can they be safe for a princess who could bekidnapped, perhaps taking all the farming wealth of Westerland in ransom?”

From the frowns the king and Comyn exchanged, Arden had theclear impression they weren’t aware of such danger. Then again, Ambrose’sinjury was news for them.

“My grandfather fully intends to come visit you as soon as he iswell,” he continued, and held out the sealed parchment packet. “I will leaveyou to read in private.”

“You will stay and enjoy the festivities this evening, won’tyou?” Queen Elise asked, as Dylan bowed and turned to head to the door.

“Thank you, Highness. That is very kind.” His gaze locked withArden’s, and she flushed as she realized that her answer was important to him.

“Yes, please. Do you like to dance?” She nearly giggled whenDylon flushed and he gave a tiny shrug.

“I don’t get many chances, but yes, I do.” He grinned. “I’m not sure how good I am.”

“I bring you wishes for a blessed and joyous tenth birthday,Princess Arden, from the royal family of Stonemount.” Dylon bowed in a fullcourtly bow so his shaggy curls flopped forward into his eyes, prompting agiggle from her. He winked as he straightened up. “And especially from mygrandfather. He had so hoped to be here, to see you.” His gaze slid to Glynna.“Unfortunately, an accident has kept him bound, indefinitely, to the palace. KingDoyne is relieved to have him close at hand, where he can be protected –”

“Protected?” Glynna blurted. “That’s ominous. What healer needsprotection?”

“—and tended to, while he heals,” Dylon finished, after a briefpause. He bent again and picked up a sturdy leather travel sack from the floor. He withdrew a journal bound in bright green leather with silver lacing, and aclear bottle of green ink, and two silver pens. “My grandfather knows howAuntie Glynna teaches, and he sent these to help in your continuing lessons andobservations.” He held them out to her.

“Oh, they’re wonderful.”Arden stepped forward to take the gifts. “Please, give him my thanks and myprayers for a speedy and full recovery. I know Auntie Glynna would be sopleased to see him again. Perhaps we could make a journey to Stonemount, tovisit Healer Ambrose, Father?”

Twenty minutes later, her hair brushed and braided and shoes onher feet, Arden stepped into her father's study. King Alfred and Queen Elisewaited at the head of the long council table, Comyn standing just in front ofthe king, to his left.

A tall young man with tousled, curly dark hair and gray eyes, dressed in sturdy traveling clothes, stood on the queen’s right. He held apacket sealed with green wax, which had to be the letter from Ambrose. Ardenwondered only for a moment why he wasn’t wearing the green and black livery ofStonemount. Shouldn’t a courier from the royal family be in livery?

She forgot that question when the young man’s eyes widened andhe looked past her. Right at the place where Glynna hovered. He could see her. That meant he had magic.

As if in confirmation of that thought, several silver sparkshovered around his head for a few heartbeats. Silver magic was healing magic. That made sense now. He was another healer like Ambrose, so he had brought theletter instead of sending it by courier.

All three adults smiled as Arden curtseyed very prettily.

“Arden,” her mother said, gesturing at the young healer, “thisis Dylon, grandson to Healer Ambrose.”

“Oh, my, how he’s grown. He looks so much like his grandmother, rather than Ambrose,” Glynna said.

Dylon grinned and gave ahead-bow to Glynna, and Arden’s heart sputtered a few beats in excitement. Hecould hear her, as well as see her. She had yet to meet anyone who could seeand hear her beloved teacher. This was quite the best present for her birthday. She couldn’t wait to talk to him. And have Glynna talk to him.

“The boy, your nephew’s heir.” Steward’s expression turnedgrave. “Shadows are slowly gathering, and poisoned roots reach for him. He is apotential pivot point in our war. My dreams of him are hazy. Nothing isconfirmed. No decisions have been made, but he is poised on too many knifeedges. The enemy wants him, and he is vulnerable.” He nodded to Dylon. “Thisone is young. I do not like to ask you to put him into the war, but a companionwho isn’t awed by his rank could be a good influence, a wall of protection.” Heshook his head. “And could come under attack for it. I don’t want to ask it ofyou …”

“You don’t have to.” Ambrose gripped Dylon’s shoulder. “Mynephew is already concerned about his son’s attitude, since losing his wife. She was a defensive wall against the flatterers and bootlickers and liars. Hesuggested some time ago that Maddix needs a steadying influence, and someonewho will stand up to him.”

“Thank you.”

“The princess … is she in danger?”

“Not yet.”

“But she will be?”

“When she starts thinkingfor herself, and lets her heart guide …” The Steward sighed and shrugged. “Ihave dreamed too many branching paths ahead of her, and all of them vanish intothe mist of possibilities.”

The two wove their way through the laughing, singing, dancingthrongs, down five streets and through another fountain square, until they cameout into a quieter portion of Port’ham. A young man with gingery curls and afaint dusting of beard, wearing the simple clothes of a traveler, sat on abench in front of a closed shop, and watched them come down the street. Theswirls of magic faded as they spun down around him. When Ambrose got closeenough, he saw the young man’s eyes: fern green. A faint glow like a candleflame flickered behind them, just for a moment before the last of the magicfaded entirely.

He stopped a dozen paces away from the young man, who had asimple traveler’s pack tucked under the bench by his feet. A sturdy walkingstick leaned against the bench. Ambrose bowed head and shoulders in silenttribute.

“Healer.” The young man smiled. “I’m pleased to meet you.”

“You honor me, Steward.” Ambrose’s lips twitched in a briefsmile when Dylon caught his breath at the title.

“We are all servants on level ground at Yeshen’s feet.” Theyoung man got to his feet. “I’m grateful we had a chance to meet. I feel I wasguided here to warn you, as well as Auntie Glynna.”

“Me?” He held perfectlystill, thinking of Glynna, newly Gifted to the baby princess, and the damagethat could be done to Westerland, to all the kingdoms touching the farmingkingdom, if that magic Gift was lost. Other times when a Gift had been passedon, Durmad had struck, through physical attack or through subtlety, killing thenew Gifted or taking them prisoner, or warping them to employ that magic in hisservice. Had enemy spies followed Glynna here, sensing she was about to Giftherself?
