One from an avalanche of staggering things @thecultofmindy said yesterday in the aftermath of joy. She had no intention of writing it down so … DIBS.

Because I post so much for @awfulgoodwriters and my own merch, and because I don’t love the not-fun of lookin like a billboard, I turn most everything down that folks may ask me to promo. So you can understand why I had to tell Andrea Gibson’s sister, Laura, whose birthday is tomorrow, that there’s no way I’m making an exception to promote her dumb new hat project, @hatxhats. I don’t care if she rebuilt her life from scratch or not, or if she IS the most heartwarming thing @andrewgibby ever talks about. Not fallin for it. Find someone else to peddle your wears, dummies.

The Colonel and Mrs. Marple. Two of the best friends I ever had. Death is no tragedy, but I never hurt so hard about a thing dying. 2012, Kingston, WA.

Last year on a date with a man who’d been in prison for 15 years I asked how he coped with the hardest part. He told me there was a Hip Hop artist named Sage Francis he’d listened to the whole way. He asked if I’d ever heard of him… (biggest smile ever), “Have I ever heard of Sage Francis!?! Have you ever heard of Human the Death Dance?”

If you and I are new to each other, Human the Death Dance is a piece I wrote by memory at a 10-day Vipassana meditation course. It also ended up being the name of Sage’s next album as we we embarked on a 43-date national tour. The serendipity gone on by being in orbit with this man for the last 18 years has helped set in motion a ride I hope continues well into the next life.

It’s a story worth repeating to let you know Sage Francis is leading a month-long series of live writing sessions for Awful Good Writers. Don’t even think about missing this chance to learn from one of the sharpest lyricists I’ve ever known. Link in bio. @awfulgoodwriters @sagefrancissfr

#45Lies is a national action campaign to UNnormalize the president’s dangerous and persistent assault on the truth before the national election. Disinformation is a key to fascism, and we, the makers and children of hip hop culture, just ain’t havin it.

I’ve posted this 45 second video in response to this SPECIFIC lie:

“We stand in solidarity with LGBTQ people who live in countries that punish, jail or execute individuals based upon sexual orientation.” -Spray Tan, addressing the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

We know better, so we SAY as such in defense of an honest public record. In the spirit of democracy and inclusion, I invite @gyamazawa @benngood, @sagefrancissfr @gwatsky and @taalamacey to also participate in this campaign.

Find a lie that targets our community. Make a 45 second video that responds to that lie. Use “Impeach the President” as a sonic backdrop. Post your video, and invite more people to do the same. Find more info at @45lies2020. Democracy is ours to keep.

*

Thanks to Jon Berardi for the track. @alejandrokrispin for the studio.

And @bamuthi360 for makin this whole campaign happen.
