King of the Wild Things

There’s a Wild Thing in the White House!
When reading a book aloud, it’s always fun to act it out. President Obama showed bad boy Max who the REAL King of the Wild Things is when he read Where the Wild Things Are to participants in the annual Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the nation’s capitol. Grrr!

Happy Arbor Day!

Angel Smith

Trees reduce air pollution, provide shade, protect us from the wind and sun, and help with noise control. And they look beautiful while they’re at it. Arbor Day is a time to celebrate these magnificent plants. Plant a tree today. And go on and hug one!

Eggstravaganza

Whenever I have attempted to color eggs at this time of year, I have been lucky  if the results were this good.

Dyed eggs!

Other egg-dyers have a lot—and I mean A LOT—more time on their hands. Some have raised the bar for decorated eggs to stratospheric heights of eggcellence. Take a look at these beauties!

These glorious jeweled eggsamples are my favorites. Why? Because they’re actually cakes and taste as sweet as they look!

Egg cakes!

Hidden treasure

Photographer Linden Gledhill isn’t content to photographing butterflies and moths in all their glory. He aims his lens at the he microscopic scales of their wings. The results are breathtaking.

Leapfrog … day three

This game of leapfrog could last until April. Just wake up the frog when it’s over!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

What are people looking for at this time of year?
Two things, mainly.
LEPRECHAUNS and FOUR-LEAF CLOVER.
I have saved you from the hunt this time. You’re welcome!
May you always have…

Walls for the winds

A roof for the rain

Tea beside the fire

Laughter to cheer you

Those you love near you

And all your heart might desire.
Lucky leprechauns!
Lucky four-leaf clover!

Snow giant

Winter is not over yet, and the cold white stuff is still falling from the sky. Plowing and shoveling only leads to unsightly lumps and piles. What’s a farmer in Gilman, Minnesota to do? What else but build a fifty-foot stunner of a snow person? Let’s hope this fearsome Frosty has come in peace!

Grandpunks

Punk rock isn’t just for youngsters anymore. French designer Jean Paul Gaultier has included punk oldsters as models in a recent fashion show. What kid wouldn’t like to say, “Cool mohawk, Grandpa!” and “You’re so punk rock, Grandma!”

E is for Edgar

Edward Gorey

Happy birthday to one of my all-time favorite book illustrators, Edward Gorey! Mr. Gorey long ago passed from this world to the next, but his beautiful and strange drawings will live on as long as there is imagination, humor, and weirdness in the world.
