Happy Floral Fourth of July!
BANG!
What is that? The sound of fireworks! I love the flash and color of a pyrotechnic display. But last year I witnessed the unhappy effect of all the noise and fuss on the sensitive ears of my brother’s poor dog. Dugan was practically catatonic with fear and dread. Most dogs (and some humans) agree: noise-wise, fireworks are a drag.
Luckily, there’s another kind of fireworks. Quiet, quiet varieties. And they can be found right in your own garden. This marigold, for instance, gives any Fourth firework a run for its splendor.
And this Pink Ice cluster certainly pops without a bang.
A Gerbera daisy finale is a spectacular sight to behold.
So, if you want to give your ears a break (and your doggy’s, too) this year, grab some scissors, head out into the garden, and bring the fireworks indoors this year. Happy Fourth of July, everyone!

Happy Father’s Day!
Another Father’s Day, another tie for Dad. He does like ties. But this year why not give him one as sweet as he is?
In other words, give Dad a tie cake this Father’s Day!
Don’t forget the ice-cream cake option. Dad will thank you either way, and I’m sure he’ll share a slice or two. Happy Father’s Day, Dad! Love you.

Yes, Dad can eat this tie. Image and step-by-step instructions on how to make this cake found here.

Dad can eat this tie, too. But he might get a brain freeze. Image (and ice-cream cake by): Carvel.

Gnome home
Tree stumps.
They’re everywhere.
And they always look forlorn.
Luckily, gnomes (and fairies, to be fair) are always in need of housing. And there’s nothing they like better than to move into one of these babies. With planning, imagination, and spare time for fun, anyone can transform a sad-looking tree stump into an inviting home for wee members of the magical realm.
Whether or not a gnome (or fairy, to be fair) chooses to move into one of these fantastic creations, I would much rather see a gnome home than a forlorn stump, so I’d better get building. For tips on how to build a gnome home, there is no better resource than Jennifer Pilcher. She will break it down for you with pictures of homes so charming you will want to send the gnomes packing and move in yourself!

Sloths welcome here
Sloth-crossing signs are a familiar sight in Costa Rica, where the slow-moving creatures abound. Injured and orphaned sloths have found tender loving care at the Sloth Sanctuary, run by Judy Avey-Arroyo, Luis Arroyo, and their family.
Since 1992, the Sloth Sanctuary has rescued more than 500 sloths, treating and releasing as many as it can and providing a permanent home for those unable to survive in the wild due to disability or other issues.
And what to the sloths have to say about that?

Home
Spring has sprung, and that means one important thing to our feathered friends. Time to build a nest!
The weaver bird shows off impressive beak-knitting skills.
Bald eagles need room. And lots of it.
Hummingbirds just want a cozy nook.
White storks like roof access.
Swallows prefer a wall. And some mud.
Eurasian coots like a waterfront view.
And this is what it’s ALL about. These beautiful sparrow’s eggs couldn’t ask for a homier dwelling.

So bad, so good
Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love, and got married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.
BOOM!
An invisible man married an invisible woman. Their kids were nothing to look at, either.
BOOM!
What does a clock do when it’s hungry? It goes back four seconds.
AND I’M OUT!
