My most recent book, You Are Graduating Soon: What's After High School?, began as a short, motivational email.
It was only supposed to be a quick, inspirational message to my smart, young nephew who was simply refusing to do his homework and get good grades.
As the draft of my email to my nephew grew longer and longer, I decided to make it a more permanent and longer-lasting message. It occurred to me that maybe my message could have a longer life as a book or booklet.
My original goal was simply to make sure if my nephew did not end up in college, he would some how stumble upon his Uncle Kevin's "book" later in life and eventually get back on track.
As I transformed my writings into an easy to read booklet, I realized that my desire to help one, young individual could actually help many other teens, young adults, and families facing similar educational challenges.

I try to write a minimum number of words (or write for a certain amount of time) each and every week. It's not always easy to do this. After about one hour into writing, I usually become super-inspired. If I am not inspired, I still make sure I stay on my writing schedule as best as possible.

I am working on a short story. It will be an Amazon Kindle Single under their Mystery, Thriller & Suspense genre.

Get your ideas out of your head and onto paper (or into your word processing program). Try as best as you can to quickly draft an outline and one or two main characters. In the beginning, simply write as fast as possible without stopping to correct anything. Keep in mind: It's easier to edit actual words on a page than it is to edit a blank page.

The best thing about being a writer is having an opportunity to write something that truly connects with readers.

I try to prevent writer’s block by drafting a quick outline. Before writing my outline, I create very short biographies for my main characters.
I try to write out my outline and character biographies as quickly as possible…non-stop. At this point, I am not looking for perfection.
After I do this, I am able to start writing. I have a better idea what to write and a better idea where my characters are going.
