Great question!
1) You're going to get knocked down a thousand times. Just believe that you CAN do this if you keep at it.
2) The bits that you love the most other people often won't notice, and sometimes won't like at all - Don't hold on to your favourite bits of writing. The flow of the story is more important.
3) Get help - there's loads of help out there these days. Some paid, but also lots of authors who can feedback on your work in return for feedback on theirs.
4) Have fun!

Hey Lucy... there's so many important things it's hard to choose one. But let me concisely call out a few:
1) Hard work and the utter determination to see it through. It took me 4 years to write my novel :)
2) Asking for feedback from people who will be hard on your writing. Listen, understand filter, and re-write. And then get more feedback and so on and so on. I rewrote my novel in full 3 times and had about 10 different drafts that I submitted to people for feedback.
3) Planning and plotting extensively makes the whole thing a lot easier. I learnt the hard way!
Hope that helps :)

From the world around me. For my latest book, I combined my interest in the two technologies that are going to change the world beyond recognition - Artificial Intelligence & Virtual Reality - with my interest in books, movies and video games such as Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games & SkyRim

I have loads of advice! But here's some really important things: 1) You have got to be determined. It will take you years potentially to write a decent book the first time around. 2) Don’t publish your book without a ton of feedback. And not feedback from your family and friends, unless you can be sure they’ll be harsh. But watch out for paid services who aren’t harsh enough. The tougher the feedback, the better your story will be. 3) Use the years it takes to write your book to build an audience, and a network of people who will support your book launch.

Science Fiction is definitely my favourite. Stories that spin up new ideas and have an exciting premise, and ideally the kind of stories that are based on things that have a real chance of happening. My favourite stories leave me thinking about them for days!

The sequel to Extropia: Mind Game, Extropia: The Dead Shall Rise.

Extropia: Mind Game brings together two of the most important technologies of our age, technologies that will make the world we know today unrecognisable in the years to come: Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Everyone's talking about how robots and machines may become a threat to humankind and how we need to make sure they are programmed to be unable to hurt humankind. But what about the characters of a computer game? These characters are quite literally programmed to defeat the humans they play against. What happens when they realise there's another world out there, and the deeply troubled world in which they live exists only for the entertainment of others?
