Katheryn Thompson I intend to read as many books as possible, but in particular: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Handmaid's Tale, and One Hundred Years of Solitude, which I can't believe I've not read yet, The Honeymoon, Paradise Lodge, and Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death, which I've won in Goodreads giveaways, and The Gene: an Intimate History, which I've just treated myself to for my birthday.
Katheryn Thompson Getting paid for something that I enjoy thoroughly; for me writing is a way of relaxing, a hobby bordering on an obsession (as Erasmus said "the desire to write grows with writing"). It might sound cliched but I also genuinely love that people get enjoyment out of my writing. Seeing your book for sale in Waterstones is also (for lack of a better word) cool.
Katheryn Thompson I've answered this question in my latest blog post: 'Why Brown Leather Shoes'. There's 2 answers and 1 of them is a bit strange...check it out to see if you know where I'm coming from.
Katheryn Thompson If you have a story inside you, tell it. Write for yourself, not for other people. When I first started writing Brown Leather Shoes I wrote for me. I wrote because I had an idea that I wanted to explore and because, above all else, I enjoyed it. So my advice is to just go for it. What's the worst that could happen?

Katheryn Thompson If I haven't got any new ideas, I won't write just anything so I might read through what I've already written, or read other books, or even listen to music or just forget about writing for a while until I get inspiration. I often get the best ideas when I don't mean to! So from something I read or hear someone say, and sometimes get brilliant ideas in the middle of the night or when I'm doing normal, completely unrelated, things.
