Since I have newly entered the world of a dating site, relationships, always a mystery anyway, are leaning their way into plots. Luckily mysteries can be solved without bloodshed or mayhem.

I rearranged life to organize my two-day, 900 mile turnaround with a couple of decent flights, a cool hotel and a dynamite little black dress because I was finally going to fulfill my long-awaited dream of seeing Hamilton. Now I'm standing in front of the theater, its marque, golden and welcoming, to discover the doors locked and a sign: Gas Leak - Check listings for reopening dates.

Since I'm immersed in two books: The Nightingale and Lethal White, those are the situations I can best respond about right now. Rather that traveling back in time to occupied France during World War II, and find myself trying to survive under a brutal regime, I'm choosing an easier path. In Lethal White, set in 21st century London, I can shadow a young, ambitious woman who is both intelligent and courageous as she balances an unhappy marriage with the exciting apprenticeship in a detective agency. Robin is learning and growing personally and professionally as she follows the lead of her tortured hero boss, Strike. I wouldn't miss a day of this ride for as long as it lasts.

This summer has been great for finding and devouring really interesting reads. I've enjoyed Bivald's, The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend and George's The Little Paris Bookshop. I'm in the midst of following Gloria Steinem's fascinating journey in My Life on the Road and looking forward to the very personal and tender When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. Since I'm generally reading two (and sometimes three) books at a time, I try to keep it simpler by combining nonfiction and fiction. Right now I'm finishing Steinem's autobiographical work while also enjoying M.L. Stedman's The Light Between Oceans and one of Patricia Cornwell's iconic, dark mysteries called Dust. Since it's only June, the summer season is still new; with many more books to crack, the plan is to continue to whittle away at the teetering pile on my bedside table.

Write about something you know and for which you have passion. Baby steps are good; don't rush yourself. Experiment with different genres until you find a style that just fits you. And finally, don't write just to please someone else. Its hard work - do it if you love what's happening as you write and get satisfaction when you're finished.

I first recognize that it is not something to fear because it is going to happen. Writing is intense and exacting work. Sometimes my mind and heart just balk at the idea of creating one more sentence. So, I rest; I take a break for awhile and do something mindless and fun. Because what I'm working on is always percolating even though I'm on break, words, ideas, questions, thoughts are still lining up somewhere in my head. When I'm rested, I'm ready to begin again with some new thoughts about an waiting project.

Perhaps I'm old school, but I love Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth in Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Reading about, listening to, or watching that relationship unfold emotionally and culturally never gets old.

I'm now working on a nonfiction book - A Patch of Blue: heading toward Grace - based on finding hope after the worst things happen in our lives. Written interviews with bereaved parents share how profound grief does not have to be the end of one's life. Ways to help those in grief move toward a new and grace-filled space are highlighted.

My favorite thing is a bit of a double edged sword. I really like making my own deadlines and setting a schedule for myself as I write. The tough part of that is actually being responsible to myself and my craft and keeping to that schedule no matter who calls or what interesting events might be happening outside my office.
