(view spoiler)[Dennis, the publisher has asked for three books in the Harlan Two-Trees series, but there might turn out to be four. I appreciate your anxious feeling that everything wasn't wrapped up neatly at the end of ST. The book starts as it began, a man alone with his horse. I don't want to give anything away for the book, but I think you will be glad you made the investment of your time. My sincerest thanks for reading the book. If you haven't read the first book, HERE BY THE BLOODS, I can assure you that you won't walk away unsatisfied. BB (hide spoiler)]

Inspiration is great, but as Stephen King says, most of us just get on with the work. If writers only waited for inspiration to strike, books would never get finished. Oftentimes, the greatest moments of inspiration come from the act of writing itself. Start writing and good things will happen. But there are times when I need to mix things up, to get out of the office and get things flowing. A long, hard bike ride or a run can sometimes solve a story point or give birth to a new idea. An air travel, for some reason. Something about sitting captive for 3-4 hours unlocks creativity. If all else fails, going to bed before I'm totally exhausted. Putting my head down on the pillow with eyes closed has yielded some of the best ideas I've ever had--enough to get me out of bed to write them down before they slip away again.

My new book, STORM'S THUNDER, picks up where the first one left off. I'm interested in tackling all the great forces of the American West. In HERE BY THE BLOODS I got to look at a small town and the sense of community--both good and bad--that came about mostly by necessity. The new book features the main character, Harlan Two-Trees, very much on the move. That meant the railroad as much as horseback. I rode the Southwest Chief--which is basically the exact same road of track that's been in place for 140 years--from Santa Fe to Los Angeles as part of my research. STORM'S THUNDER also allowed me to write the army for the first time. But the most fun was describing baseball through the eyes of someone who has never seen it.
