The ability to create a world, whether contemporary or completely fictional. You get to nurture a work from the first kernel of an idea through to the finished product. The feeling I got when the gallies for my first published novel arrived is akin to that of seeing my first-born child for the first time.

The only way I've been able to deal with writer's block is to write. When I reach the point where I'm stuck writing a particular story or novel, I write something else. Eventually, the creative juices start flowing again--bouncing ideas off a writer group also helps.

Don't give up! It's tough getting that first book published and there's a lot of good competition out there. Join a GOOD writer group and join a professional writing organization (I belong to MWA and ITW). Attend writing conferences, although some can be expensive there are some very good affordable ones (The New England CrimeBake is very good).

I don't know if inspiration has anything to do with it. I put my butt in the chair and try to avoid all procrastination tools and write.

The idea for THE FISHERMAN came from my late wife, Connie. We visited Vancouver, BC and she fell in love with the city. She came into my office with an online news story, it dealt with the case on which my novel was inspired, and said "You can write a book based on this." It took me 13 years to finally finish it. Unfortunately, cancer took her from me and she never got to see the finished book.
