Renee Ross That's easy. Megan Cleary and Father Ralph from The Thorn Birds, by Colleen McCullough.
Renee Ross Though all of my books are Gothic Romance, or Gothic Suspense, the Brides of Thornehaven series most closely mimics that of the Vintage Gothic Romance of the 1960's and 1970's. The only thing missing is the painted picture of the woman running from the castle. The plot, however, is completely original. As to how I came up with it, I just brainstormed until I was convinced that I had something worthy of paying homage to the era.
Renee Ross The best source of inspiration is pleasing my ideal reader. Writing is fun, but it is also arduous with long hours of tedious rewriting, editing and polishing. It is an all-consuming endeavor that leaves little time for life's other enjoyments. What is needed more than inspiration is dedication and tenacity.
Renee Ross I am currently working on my Brides of Thornehaven series. Book One is called, The Reincarnation of Anna Thorne, and has been out for about a year. I was diverted by two other projects so there will be more time between Books One and Two than I'd originally intended. It shouldn't matter much because each book in the series can be read as a stand alone. Book Two is called, The Haunting of Delilah, and I am about halfway through my first draft.
Renee Ross If someone doesn't like your book, it is probably because they are not your ideal reader. Imagine that ideal reader and write what you love for yourself and for them. Don't have unrealistic expectations of success because its much likelier in today's market that you will always be a small fish in a big pond. Don't give up, because when a reader finishes your book and says, "I loved it!", the pride and satisfaction will make all the uphill battles worthwhile.
Renee Ross Working in your slippers.
Renee Ross The more I write, the less it happens. But, I have come to realize that there really is no shortage of ideas. They can come from other fiction novels where there might be a story within a story that has never been explored, or an old movie plot that can evolve into something new. Or, better yet, just real life - things happening in the news, reality TV, crime shows - anything can spur an idea which can be used to craft a plot.
