Hello Joanna, this is such a great question - I don't know if the family that helped to hide my great-grandparents was ever honored. I wish I did!

Dear Camila,
Thanks for your message, and I’m glad to hear you liked the “We Were the Lucky Ones” series. I hope you enjoy the book too.
My grandfather spoke about his childhood in Poland and about his journey to Brazil, but not about the ravages of the Holocaust itself. I did learn about the family’s World War II past at a family reunion in 2000.
As for which relatives I knew, besides Addy, Felicia and my grandmother Caroline, I met my great aunt Halina, my cousin Josef (still alive), and of course all the children of the second generation. If you read the book, you can learn more about my family research in the Author’s Note at the end, and also on my website here.
Sending warm wishes for a happy and healthy new year!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the book! The research was challenging, for sure, and sometimes the hardest part was imagining myself in the shoes of my relatives as they navigated the war/did all that they could to stay alive. It was quite emotionally taxing at times, but I never thought to give up on the research or the writing. I found piecing together the narrative (and in turn coming to understand my ancestry) incredibly rewarding.

Hello Sally, thank you for the kind words about my book! Unearthing and recording my family's story - to the page and now to the screen - has been life-changing. Challenging in many ways, but both projects were incredibly rewarding. Beyond grateful and honored to be able to share the story with the world! Warmly, Georgia

Dear Donna,
Thanks for your message, and I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed “We Were the Lucky Ones” in both book and television form!
In the 1950s, several years after the families were settled in Brazil and the United States, Sol and Nechuma (born in the 1880s) and Genek and Jakob died of natural causes.
With best regards,
Georgia

Dear Bailee,
I’m so glad you’re inspired to write about your family history! I know it will be rewarding.
I was 15 when I first learned, thanks to a high-school research assignment, that I came from a family of Holocaust survivors. I started researching and writing in earnest in my 20’s. Once I got the blessings of all my living relatives, I was happy to share the story with the world.
I wish you the best of luck in your own writing project!
Warmly,
Georgia

Hello Genevieve, yes Kurc is my family's real surname. My grandfather Americanized his name to Courts when he moved to the States but his siblings and their descendants still go by Kurc. Sounds like have some parallels in our family histories. Thank you for sharing!

Dear Susan,
Apologies for the long delay in responding to your question! As far as I know, Jakob and Genek's deaths (of heart and lung disease, respectively) were not directly related to their wartime experiences.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the book - I loved coming to understand my roots though the decade-long journey of unearthing and recording my family's story!
Warmly,
Georgia

Thanks, Maribeth!
I appreciate the kind words. It was a true labor of love to research and record my family's story. I, too, was inspired by the love that they shared, and the persistent hope that one day they'd reunite.
My next book is due out next year! I'm working on it now...stay tuned :)

Dear Maria,
Thanks for your thoughtful question. Genek's death was not directly related to his wartime experiences, although we can't know for sure whether the conditions and lack of medical attention during those years had an indirect effect on his health. And in general, the family was so focused on building their new lives after the war that impact from their wartime experiences was not evident. They certainly had painful memories, but somehow managed to maintain positive attitudes for their fresh starts far away from the battlegrounds and killing fields.
In case you haven't seen it, there's a little more background about the family members, as well as my research, on my website (georgiahunterauthor.com), which you can search by name, if you are interested!

Hello Gord! Eliska's mother was Gustava. I'll be curious to know if you find a connection between her family and yours! Best of luck in your search. Warmly, Georgia
