I wanted to send Klaudia back again to the 1640's but The Time Princess covered much of the Civil War and the execution of the king and I needed another take on the period. Years ago I had jotted down notes about witch hunting for a possible story. The idea Klaudia's best mate is learning to become a witch brought the two sides together. 'What if?' the notorious Matthew Hopkins was a time traveller suggested the theme of Klaudia Cay and the Witchfinder General.

I think inspiration is around us all the time. A snippet on the news, a line in a song, illicitly overhearing someone's conversation, a major event or even a minor incident escalating into a catastrophe. Sometimes there is simply the need to get an idea down on paper before the thought moves on (and I do write on paper first, before I go anywhere near a laptop).

I actually have two books under way: the next time-travelling adventure for Klaudia Cay in The Time Masters' Chronicles series and a dystopian SciFi horror thriller set just slightly in the future. The latter is taking precedence now as there is a deadline looming.

All writers will say read, read and read. Soak up like a sponge everything you can learn. When you write you can squeeze all the good knowledge onto the page. Then you'll edit and edit again. Don't let rejection and criticism stand in your way, take them on board and along for the journey.

The independence and detachment. Escaping into other worlds where you meet your imagination head-on. Seeing words dance on the page, turning movement into meaning. Like flying a plane you leave everything behind you, until you come back down to earth and revel in the sense of achievement.

Write anything on the blank page. It doesn't matter if you don't use it or if what you say has little or nothing to do with your story, keep writing. Thoughts and ideas will flow into meaningful sentences and plot. How do I get the hero out of this, where does the story go next, where will it end? Make a list of places the next chapter might take the characters, jot down notes for later. Now you have something on the blank page and you'll want to write on.
