I haven't read Gonzalez yet, so I have no comparison but you really need to read The Summer I Died.

Thanks, Bill Light. Great last name! Natchez Burning is a slow burn, but if you have read Greg Iles, that is his style. It is totally worth the read.

Hey, Merci! I'm happy that you are getting into Stephen King's huge canon of incredible books. I started reading him when I was twelve. I was at the library with my mom, perusing the new titles, and my eyes lit on the enticing cover of Eyes of the Dragon, and I knew I just had to read it.
And read it I did. At least three times.
I have read all of his books with the exception of Gerald's Game. I plan to read it this year though.
As for the remainder of my top five, wow... that's a tough assignment if I ever had one! I have loved most of his books, and have actually been rereading them this year, which is the reason you saw a new review of Pet Sematary from me recently.
So, here is my current top 5:
The Shining
The Stand
It
Salem's Lot
Pet Sematary
Although anything by King is bound to make you happy, those five are, in my opinion, his best. Thanks, and I hope that helps. Have a good one!

This answer contains spoilers…
(view spoiler)[I'll put it to you like this, Spire: I have an iron stomach and few things in this world have the ability to make me squirm or shudder in revulsion. This book is one of those rarities. It is anything but generic. My one warning to potential readers would be that children are subjected to suffering which even I find a bit overboard. The writing is very good, approaching poetic, at times, so it isn't a constant barrage of revolting gore, but gore there is aplenty. (hide spoiler)]

Sorry for the long delay, Phillip. This Q&A feature is still pretty new and I keep forgetting to check it. Anyway, to answer your question, I have always considered myself a writer. My mom still has dozens of short stories I wrote as a kid, so telling stories has always been my passion.
Now, if you were to ask me when I knew I was an author, that would have been in 2011, after I published a short story and readers started slapping reviews on that puppy!

I would recommend Toes Up, my short story collection. The reason is simple: it is my only release to date that is longer than 40 pages. Of course, if you wanted to have something much, much thicker, there is Harmlessly Insane. That one contains Toes Up, a short story unavailable in that book named Tommy Rotten, and also my brother's short story collection Screamscapes.

When I get mental blockage, it helps to step away from the story for a little while. Take the kids to the park, walk the dog, read a book. Hot showers seem to break up the clogs in the old brain pipes sometimes. There are a lot of ways I can get lost in some unrelated activity, and then hopefully I will have climbed over the blockade by the time I resume writing. A lot of times something else I do or see or what not will trigger the idea with no effort on my part at all. Not that I've ever had writer's block or anything, you know.

Hey there, Dustin. I logged in one day and this was already installed. I swear I had nothing to do with it! You're right, though; for authors, aspiring authors and book lovers as a whole, this feature should be fun and informative.
The reason I enjoy writing so much, and I'm sure this is probably passe by this point, but it is simple. When I sit down in front of that laptop, desktop computer or even if I'm just scratching out notes on a legal pad with a number 2 pencil, that's when I get to be free from the shackles of reality. I get to dive into the world inhabited by my characters, my ideas and an endless well of possibilities. Same reason I love reading books!
I have only one goal as a writer, and that is to rule the world!

That's awesome that Goodreads implemented this! Your message is so insightful and such an inspiration to me that I'm going to copy/paste and e-mail it
That's awesome that Goodreads implemented this! Your message is so insightful and such an inspiration to me that I'm going to copy/paste and e-mail it to myself. That way I won't lose it. I hope you don't mind.:) Fantastic answer, BTW! It's simple, but so true and succinct. The escapism aspect of reading (and writing, to an extent) is a big part of why I love it, too! My major obstacle is totally immersing myself in the work enough to focus. It seems like there's always one distraction/interruption or another nowadays..
I freaking love your goal as a writer, man!! ...more
