R.J. Hore Samantha found a Jack-O-Lantern in her corn field at dusk one evening. When she went to lift the pumpkin up she discovered it was attached to a rotting body.
R.J. Hore My answer today would be the world of Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy.

I'd just sit back and enjoy the ride.
R.J. Hore After watching the first two seasons of The Expanse TV series I wanted to read the books the series was based on. There are six published so far.

I've read the first two, The Expanse & Leviathan Awakes and look forward to getting into the rest.

Between writing and reading, that should pretty well take care of summer.
R.J. Hore Got a couple.

Have Five grown children, one of whom drifts in and out of our life. Involved in the arts. Never sure what he's up to. When I do get a chance to visit (lives half the continent away) seems to be okay. Never sure.

I was on a week long sailing trip with my eldest granddaughter. We were at anchor for the night in a remote quiet bay with a group of other sailboats. The next morning she swore she was up in the middle of the night, looked out the window and saw a strange ghostly boat drifting through the fleet. Never made a sound. I said she was dreaming. She swears she wasn't.
R.J. Hore A hard question, given the number of books I've read. My choice today would be from Terry Pratchett's Disc World series of books:
Commander Samuel Vimes, and his wife, the Lady Sybil Ramkin.
Vimes has appeared as a major character in 12 books, and had a walk-on part in another 5, while Sybil appears in 8 books. They are the perfect odd couple, madly in love, and completely opposite. Vimes, the Commander of the city watch, is as close as you can get to a thug at times, she is a fearless upper crust. Her personal motto is: "She won't take no for an answer."

Out of my own books, I'd pick teenagers Harow and Desire-Rose from the Queen's Pawn series. Complete opposites and I enjoyed tormenting them.
R.J. Hore That might be a picture of me with a replica of a saber-tooth cat skull I use on my table when I attend cons.

I usually set it up with roses in his teeth. Prehistoric Yorrick is a bit of a romantic.
R.J. Hore You get to meet a lot of very interesting people. For me the easy part was the writing, the difficult part was getting published. Once that happened I had to get involved in the promotion, which means readings, being on panels at conferences, going to events like comic cons.

I get to meet other writers who are far more famous than I am.

But the part I like best of all, is the writing, where I get to create stories and characters.
R.J. Hore I get my ideas from a lot of different sources. Once I have an idea, I want to know how the story ends,

So I write it.

For example: The Dark Lady came about when I saw an actress on TV and thought "She could play an evil queen." Then I asked "how do evil queen's get their reputation?" and I was away

A second example: I saw something about the city of Troy. I wondered about what it would be like to be in a fallen city. Dropped a character into that stuation and I was away.
R.J. Hore Have several projects on the go.

Currently working on the second novel in the Queen's Pawn trilogy. Hope to have it completed and in to the publisher by the end of the year. Then on to book three!

Also working on the seventh novella in the Housetrap series. Just to give me a change of pace.

I have one stand-alone novel already scheduled to come out in early 2015. My editor and I will be grappling with that manuscript in the next couple of months. That could take a while as it is a bit different than my usual stuff..

Have one epic now in the hands of my editor. Don't know if we will get anywhere with that beast or if it will end up back in the bottom drawer.
R.J. Hore Write.
If you don't want to start with a novel, write a short story.

Write one short story a week and send it in.

Attend writer's conferences. A good way to meet publishers and agents and get ideas from fellow writers.

Be patient, and never ever feud with other writers, publishers, etc.
R.J. Hore Not something I have a problem with. I usually have more ideas than I can handle.

I go for a walk every morning before breakfast. If I'm at a place in a story where I might get stuck I usually solve the problem by the time I get home. A great way to come up with dialogue and scenes too.
R.J. Hore The last novella that just came out, The Treasure of the Sarah Madder, was the 6th in the Housetrap Chronicles series. I got the idea of doing more of an adventure-type tale and cribbed the title from an old movie: "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Changed it to Sarah Madder and then all I had to do was figure out what a "Madder" was...
