I appreciate your enthusiasm! I was amazed and excited when I learned the book would become a movie. Also curious to see how the adaptation would play out.

The basic game and the characters are pretty much the same. However, the movie is based in New York instead of Seattle and they changed the dares.

At this time there are no plans for a sequel. That doesn't mean I don't occasionally think about ideas for one, both with and without the same characters. But, like I said, no plans in the foreseeable future for a NERVE sequel or companion book.

Hi Hannah,
The first spark for the book idea came when I was watching my niece texting a bunch of friends, while at the same time chatting with a group of family IRL. I wanted to capture the dual real life/online life dynamic in a story. At the time, I also was struck by how much personal info everyone was sharing online, and how far reality programming participants were willing to go in the name of ratings. Putting all of those ideas together into a simple game of truth or dare (and eventually removing the truth part), I came up with NERVE.
Thanks for your question!

I thought it was fun to see where the film-makers took the premise, and to compare the differences. Plus, they added a great soundtrack. :)

So glad you liked it. I wrote the book as a standalone. Although I like tidy, closed endings myself, I thought that wouldn't be authentic for this story since once you put something out on the internet, it can never be totally "cleaned up."

At this point, there is nothing in the works for a sequel.

I thought it was interesting to compare the differences and think about why the film-makers chose to make the changes they did. At their core, the basic story lines in the film and book were the same until the third act, even if many of the surface details had changed.

Hi Anya - Like most writers, for me this was a very long process. First, I wrote a lot. Then I queried many agents over the course of three years. I signed with an agent after I'd written three manuscripts, and then she began to submit to publishers. After two years, during which time I completed two more manuscripts, we got a book deal for Nerve. My agent worked with a screen rights manager to option the rights, and we were lucky enough for it to eventually become a movie (most optioned books do not).
All in all, a lot if time, work, persistence, and luck were involved. I wish you and your friend well in your endeavor!

I wrote it, thinking it would be a standalone. Although I have some ideas where a sequel could go, there's nothing officially in the works.

I'm ecstatic about the movie, and that it's being made by such talented folks, including the directors from Catfish and actors Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Juliette Lewis, Kimiko Glenn, Emily Meade, Miles Heizer, and Marc John Jefferies. I had a chance to see some footage and it looks amazing. Estimated release is early next year. (If you want to see some photos from the set, check out #nervenyc on Twitter.)
