Hi Karen,
A longish answer to your question is in my blog post below:

A short answer is that I wanted to write about what we can be as a species. We seem to continue hurt each other; in our actions as individuals, in the groups we form (religious, skin color etc), the way nations interact with each other, and the way we treat our planet and the other life on it. We are better than this, or at least I think we can be. So I wrote the Janus Unfolding series populating it with an emergent version of us who do not act out of fear, but rather have a deep reverence for life in all its forms, and are driven to make things better.

The best and most frustrating thing about writing is finding the words to express that feeling, that thought, that whatever that is roiling around inside. It's difficult but personally rewarding.

I think that reading is part of the drive. I read so much and then I feel driven to write. One doesn't copy what one reads. It is more like the 'writing bin' gets filled to overflowing with words and ideas that come from the reading an other sources and then one has to do something about it. Writing is the only activity that can deal with the overflow. You can put off the writing for only so long before you are bursting with the need to write.

The Janus Unfolding series began with a dream I had about a man about whom there was much mystery. A body was found in his home which was burnt to the ground. He was very wealthy and I wanted to know what was behind all the mystery surrounding him. I wanted to know if it was his body that was found in his house and what was behind the incident.

The third book in the Janus Unfolding series. I'm also beginning to think about writing a new story in first person.

Read a lot and write. The reading seems to help the writing.

I write with a pencil on a pad. Often I'll ask my characters about the issue or question that is creating the block. The ensuing pencil and paper conversation often creates a path to go forward.
