Mikel B. Classen For me it has been all of the unique things I've done and do. For much of my life I have been a non-fiction writer, still am. I worked as a feature writer for magazines and newspapers. Often on my assignments, I was sent to cover some really fascinating moments. I was able to Kayak with a group from Lake Biakal, Russia. I was asked to ride on a U.S. naval frigate across Lake Superior. They wanted to throw a wreath out over where the Edmund Fitzgerald went down and wanted someone to cover it. I rode on a dogsled during the inception of the U.P. 200 sled dog race. I've ridden on sailing ships, tall ships, as well as attending the reintroduction of Moose into the upper peninsula of Michigan called the Moose Lift. I've been able to be an adventurer and explorer along with writer and photographer. I wouldn't trade a moment of it.
Mikel B. Classen Though I'm known for writing non-fiction, over the years I've written quite a bit of fiction. I have a novel coming out soon and my Lake Superior Tales is short story fiction. This is probably going to sound a little weird, but I either kill a character or blow something up within my story. When you begin to ask, How does this effect my characters? It usually opens a flood gate of directions for your surviving characters. How does it affect the world within the story? Boom, all the possibilities fly.
Mikel B. Classen I'm currently doing a final rewrite on my upcoming novel, The Alexandria Code. It's an action/adventure story with a bit of a sci-fi plot. I'm working on a second volume of True Tales, the forgotten history of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I have been researching some great stories and this second volume promises to eclipse the first. Also coming soon will be a collection of gothic horror short stories Illustrated by artist Brad Gishia titled "Night Screams." Should be a fun volume of terror.
Mikel B. Classen As she awoke from the nightmare, she felt the fingers clutching her throat. It was the last thing she ever saw.
Mikel B. Classen As a Historian and author, I have a large collection of historical pictures of Michigan's Upper Peninsula dating back to 1850. I decided that I would begin sharing some of these old photos through the medium of a book. I figured it was better than keeping them in a drawer. It has turned out to be a nice way to put the images of the Faces, Places and Days Gone By into a Pictorial History of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
