Maria Mathis I really had to think about this one because most of the books I read are adventure, horror or fantasy. But then I remembered Rachel the witch from Kim Harrison's "Hollows" series. I got really invested in her and Trent's relationship for a while. Also, there's a book called "Dime Store Magic" by Kelley Armstrong. I really liked the relationship between the nerdy, but persistent lawyer and the witch, Paige. Both those relationships have a lot of suspense in them.
Maria Mathis I'm fortunate to have never experienced this. (Knock on wood!) Whenever my mind is at rest, like driving or in the shower or falling asleep, my characters start interacting. I usually have a notepad (or a napkin or a receipt) around and jot down what I saw them doing or heard them saying, then the next time I'm at my computer, I start fleshing it out.
Maria Mathis I like Shonda Rhimes' answer to this question: There's no such thing as an aspiring writer. If you write, you're a writer.
Maria Mathis I get inspired to write simply by waking up in the morning--that is, if I ever went to sleep the night before. To my own detriment, I want to spend every moment writing. It's what I love to do. One of these days I want to get inspired to do something in the real world, but I haven't figured out what yet.
Maria Mathis I'm currently finishing up the third book in the series.
Maria Mathis My inspiration for writing this series probably started about ten years ago when I found it difficult to locate fantasy novels with people of color in them. The second inspiration was watching the TV show Ancient Aliens. I was fascinated by the idea of aliens acting as gods and interacting with primitive humans and wondered, what would happen if one of "them" fell in love with one of "us?"
