A retired teacher, Maria Mathis lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She graduated with a degree in English Literature from CSU Fresno. For most of her life, she was an avid horsewoman, and still counts it as one of her favorite pastimes.

She writes fantasy fiction--or maybe "fantastical" would be a better descriptor. No swords and sorcery. She has written one three-books series called The Gods of Ahman-Tahk, and is currently launching a new historical/horror series called Thunderstorm. ...more

But then I remembered Rachel the witch from Kim Harrison's "Hollows" series. I got really invested in her and Trent's relationship for a while. Also, there's a book called "Dime Store Magic" by Kelley Armstrong. I really liked the relationship between the nerdy, but persistent lawyer and the witch, Paige. Whenever my mind is at rest, like driving or in the shower or falling asleep, my characters start interacting. I usually have a notepad (or a napkin or a receipt) around and jot down what I saw them doing or heard them saying, then the next time I'm at my computer, I start fleshing it out. (less)

Empress Belall is from the Lauve province, a very beautiful, highly magical, alien with pale lavender skin, big, dark eyes and a long topknot. If she were of our world, she would be considered a serial killer due to her habit of abducting, torturing and killing young men. Ahman-tahk is a very spiritually healthy planet, where a morality enforcement organization hadn’t been necessary for centuries, Read more of this blog post »
