Kassandra Keator This really got the cogs turning! Not to sound cliche, but for several of my characters, I have considered them my "companions" throughout my life, especially in hard times. I feel like my "favorite" one changes depending on how I am feeling and what I am working on. I think, overall, Adelie Henderson has been one of huge importance to me because I based many of her experiences off my own and find myself viewing her as a reflection of myself, or at least as my inner child. Other characters, such as Owen Smit, or Ghedi from my future novel of the same name, challenge me to think outside myself and place myself within their shoes, personalities, and feelings. They allow me more of an escape from reality and push me to think/write outside the box of what I usually do, which I also enjoy!
Kassandra Keator Reading books, listening to music, watching shows/movies, spending time in nature, going to museums, traveling to new places... the list goes on.
Kassandra Keator My companion book to OOTF, "Den of the Mongrel," and a completely separate story, "Ghedi."
Kassandra Keator I have complete control over what I put on the page- a direct line to my brain through my fingertips. It also allows me a break from reality, which can be cathartic sometimes. Plus, the history and importance of story-telling and writing/language goes way, way back, and it can be pretty cool to know that you are part of such an ancient art.
Kassandra Keator I usually try to distract myself with other hobbies I may have until the "zone" comes back, such as art/painting, walking, swimming, sports with our dogs, video games, etc. Sometimes even just reading a really good book can get the juices flowing again, or working on a different writing project than I have been.
Kassandra Keator There's a lot of things I could think of as advice, but perhaps the biggest is this- don't force yourself to write. Let the inspiration and ideas come as they are, and as often, or not as often, as they do. Not allowing yourself this will only make writing feel like a chore rather than something enjoyable- I have learned this the hard way many times! Also, constructive criticism can be great/useful, but don't let others change what you don't wish to change. It is your creation. It can be beneficial to accept help, but run things by your own rules and preferences.
