Asha Lemmie Hi David! The title for Fifty Words For Rain is based on the saying that there are fifty words to describe rain in Japanese, since it rains so often in Japan. There are other languages too, that are said to have dozens of words to describe rain or snow. I’m something of an amateur linguist, and so I thought that would make an apt metaphor to describe the many different kinds of obstacles that we all face in life, and that Nori in particular faces in the story. Asha Lemmie Thank you so much Cathy! I was inspired to write this novel because I wanted to explore isolation, and the many ways in which we impose barriers between ourselves and others. Nori is not based on anyone directly, but she is loosely based off of some of my own experiences, and the experiences of people I’ve met.
Asha Lemmie Hi Kyle! I think Fifty Words For Rain would make a wonderful choice for a book club because there’s a lot to discuss about this unique perspective and setting. None of the characters are cut and dry, and their motivations are often completely understandable, even if their actions aren’t. I’ve provided the link to the Book Club Kit if you’d like to check it out!

Asha Lemmie Another historical fiction novel featuring a little girl lost, who becomes quite the force to be reckoned with.
