Damian S. Simankowicz So I just finished my first children’s book, called Sage Escape Adventures: The Unicorn Rescue. The book is an adaptation of the Sage Escape comic book series. I’ve wanted to do a kids version of the series since it began in 2012. This is the first year (2017) that I’ve had the time to even attempt it. Writing and illustrating the book actually went really smoothly. It helped that I’d just been working on the main comic book/graphic novel series, so all the characters and locations were clear in my mind. It was so enjoyable, that I’m bouncing straight into the second book: Sage Escape Adventures: The Butterfly Woman.
Damian S. Simankowicz Whenever I’m working on one story, an entirely different story forms in my mind. As I’m working on the first story, I jot down notes for the new (second) story in note pads. I have piles of notepads and folders with stories piling up from over the years. By the time I actually get to turn a story into a book for release, I’m pretty inspired because the characters and worlds have been developing for so long in my mind. It’s actually a relief to get them down on paper.
Damian S. Simankowicz The best thing about being a writer (IMHO) is creating something from an idea and then seeing it eventually released (after a huge amount of work and more hours, days, weeks, months and years than you care to admit to yourself) in both ebook and paperback formats. The ebook is great for viewing on various devices and getting the story out there. And having the paperback released is super exciting, every time. Giving away physical copies in competitions is exciting. Having your own proof copy is exciting. It’s real. You made it. And now you can put it on the shelf beside your favorite books. Just gives you a good feeling.
Damian S. Simankowicz I have the opposite problem. I’ve got folders of stories with notes and sketches that I’ve built up over the years. And I’m always trying to play catch up with what I’ve already started. For example, this year I have a new book out for Sage Escape (Transhuman) and the first books out for Sleeping With Ghosts and Ravage. All of those stories I came up with many years ago. I work in graphic novels, and it is a very time consuming process converting your ideas into detailed artwork. Especially for Sage Escape, which is a space opera with a ridiculous amount of locations, characters and technology. And I’ve been doing the pencils, inks and colors myself on that series. Luckily I got to work with some great artists on Ravage and Sleeping With Ghosts, so I could just focus on the writing and producing for those titles. Which was a wonderful experience.
