Randy C. Dockens Hi Lily,
I already have an editor and proofreader. The idea of becoming an author started after I received my doctorate in biblical prophecy and was deciding how to utilize that. I combined my scientific knowledge and Bible knowledge to write stories that, while fiction, are based on the truth of science and scripture. I hope readers are entertained as well as learn something about God they may not have considered previously.
Randy C. Dockens As the moon rose, a wolf howl and an icy breeze sent shivers down Elaine’s spine as she realized taking the shortcut through the graveyard had likely been a mistake. Suddenly, something grabbed her ankle causing her to fall as it—someone—something—dragged her into a nearby grave even as she repeatedly yelled, “But I’ve been good, I’ve been good;” yet laughter overshadowed her screams and a dark, husky voice replied, “What is good, except a pitiful excuse for not even knowing what that word means.”
Randy C. Dockens Since I have a doctorate in both pharmacokinetics (mathematically describing how drugs go through our body) and in Bible prophecy, I want to combine both science and future prophecy in my writing. Therefore, my writing has a strong scientific bent to it and tends to yield some form of biblical prophecy. I want readers to have a great time in reading a good story, but learn something at the same time - the best of both worlds, so to speak. I hope that is what readers feel when they read my books.
Randy C. Dockens While I'm getting my current series out, I have just completed the drafts for a new series that is truly science fiction. Well, while definitely science fiction, as a pilot gets flung to the far reaches of the universe and meets "people" who look very different from himself, it is filled with truth as well. After all, truth is truth. That means the truth we know is universal no matter where we are in the universe. I used to say that line a lot. I would tell my wife, "truth is truth" to point out I was in the right. Needless to say, she got irritated with that! I have learned to not say it as often (see I can learn!), but the truth of the statement still remains. I think this series shows that it is not our outward differences that define us, but how we are on the inside which unites us and makes us all "human."
Randy C. Dockens I know this may sound simplistic, but just write. There will always be those who will want to read what you write. There will be many more who will if it is written well. Therefore, be sure you have a good editor. Also, proofread, proofread, proofread! It always amazes me how many mistakes get through. Our minds tend to correct them because we know what it should read. Sometimes, have a new set of eyes on the text makes all the difference.
Randy C. Dockens I once read someone say there is no such thing as writer's block. I had to think about that for a while. Yet, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that statement may actually be true. While one could call it writer's block, I think it is more just putting what one wants to say in its proper perspective. I know that when I write, there are times I have to just walk away for some time and get the story and possibilities sorted in my mind before I head back to my writing. So, to others it may seem like I am blocked, but in actuality I'm just sorting things out in my mind. And my mind can sometimes be quite the labyrinth!
Randy C. Dockens Inspirations come from many different places. If you've seen my book trailer or a video about myself (which you can find at randydockens.com) you know that I have a scientific background and a biblical background. One question has been, how can a one-world government be obtained when governments are very reluctant to give up their autonomy? One way for this to happen is explored in my new book, T-H-B, coming out this September. I was able to put my scientific interest into it as well: as an astrophysicist begins to discover his world is not as he thought it to be. His discovery takes him on a journey of intrigue and covert adventures. I think you'll find it a fun read.
Randy C. Dockens I have a very scientific profession, so being a writer lets me put on my creative hat for a while. It's really quite liberating. To answer the question more specifically, I get to go on a journey to wherever I want to go, and even better, I get to take people along with me for the ride.
