Jeremy Dwyer Assuming you have an idea you love, you just have to want to write more than you want to do other things. You have to do those other things first, so that you don't have them interrupt your writing; perhaps they can even inform your writing. Yes, this can delay the writing for a long time: years, or even decades.

Where that idea comes from has to do with life, your expectations, disappointments, personality and talents. I don't have any formula for that.
Jeremy Dwyer If you truly love and care about your story, the best part is seeing it take form, and the fascinating twists and turns it can take, as it passes from, to and through the parts you had planned. You get to have more fun as it goes additional places, ones that you had not planned, as well. That's the only reason that I write.
Jeremy Dwyer Write bits and pieces, even if they don't connect logically or sequentially: you can write a later chapter and fill in the gaps when you can. These ideas may still be good. Listen to music. Do this often.
Jeremy Dwyer When you can, think about your story. Write down paragraphs, label them so you have their context, because they may occur out of order. Save them all in a spreadsheet, word processor or diagramming tool. Do this a lot.
Jeremy Dwyer I am currently working on Potion Voyages Book 11. Some songs are already complete!
Jeremy Dwyer When I was 18 years old, I started thinking about the oceans, and how the waters could be different, giving various super powers to people who drank of them. I got busy with college, family, graduate school, other projects, etc. From time to time in my 20s and 30s, I tried writing down my ideas, but couldn't quite find the right structure, pace or writing style. In my late 30s, we moved into a new house, and the ideas started coming fast. I still worked on other projects. I finally organized the story ideas and wrote them down whenever I could. A week before I turned 42, I had the story published. So, it can take a while.
