I purposely left the ending ambiguous because I wanted to give readers the chance to imagine what's next for Nell and Jackson on their own - you get to decide! (hide spoiler)]

Thank you so much!
Olivia was inspired by my interest in the mean girl trope. I noticed that often in pop culture, there were mean girl characters who hated the main character for no reason. I wanted to know more about those mean girls - who they were and what made them tick.

TY Courts!
I looooove Nell so it's hard to pick a favorite moment. Between Nell and Jackson, I really like the *spoiler* first scene by the lake because it's when Nell realizes how much power she has in their relationship and the first time she feels truly in control between them (I love that).
I also really like a conversation she has later with Lia where she asserts that she should be allowed to go after what she wants, without judgement from her family or friends. There's a lot of complicated dynamics in exploring what it means to be a girl there, I think.

Find a community of writers with similar goals as you. Reading, critiquing, and chatting with friends about books played such a huge part in developing my storytelling skills and I've now had many of the same writer friends for almost ten years - and seen them go from unpublished to published along with me!

First of all, I'm a monster and have no regrets.
SECOND OF ALL, I read AMERICAN GIRLS by Alison Umminger pretty recently and loved the complexity of the female characters and the west coast setting. It had so much to say about what it means to be female in America and never asks its characters to be likable and I just enjoyed it so much!

I actually had the idea for the Jackson character before Nell existed. My first book was a deconstruction of mean girls so the idea with Jackson was to take on the bad boy trope and write about how hard it would be to date someone where you were constantly second-guessing their motives (with good reason). Nell's character developed from there :)

(view spoiler)[Hi Laurie, I just finished 'How to Break a Boy' and oh man I loved it. Such a powerful read! Just a question: Liv tells Whit that she didn't deny the false story about him and Mrs Baker, but does Whit know that she urged it along? I just want to think that he knows the whole truth. Also please tell me Whit stops hanging out with Adrienne after he gets back with Liv at the end (Ade actually scares me, good job). (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the book. :) While I wanted to end the book on a satisfying note for Olivia, there's obviously still a lot that she and Whit will need to talk about, and I absolutely think that as she did with her mom, she'll want to lay all her cards on the table with Whit so they can start their relationship fresh and without secrets.
In terms of Whit hanging out with Adrienne, his willingness to be around her was due to a small amount of pettiness on his part, but his connection was mostly to Anna, who I think he will continue to talk and be friendly with.
(Ade scares me too.) (hide spoiler)]
