Rosie Godfrey I've just finished a project gathering and editing the stories of a woman in her 90's. Although I was also working on other things, for 18 months or so it did have to take centre-stage to get to publication, so now I'm back to putting the final touches to some children's songs and rhymes (with actions!) for use in Early Years settings. There's a more-than-half-written picture-book and an idea for a children's story that have also been hovering for some time now and just (just!) require more dedicated attention.
Rosie Godfrey Sit down and just do it! Time is precious, so don't waste it wishing to do something. Grab a pen or pencil (preferable to keyboard as they're tactile in a different way), but basically whatever you can flow best with and make a start. Put your Inner Editor on mute and go with whatever comes up. You can find the gems and polish them later. Start digging!...

Of course, a certain amount of 'mulling' is needed, but if anything is actually going to get written then you have to just TURN UP AND WRITE!!
Rosie Godfrey Off the top of my head? Would have to say, Mr and Mrs Twit from The Twits by Roald Dahl. I used to have so much fun reading them in character to both my children and classes I taught. And now, I've had the joy of revisiting them through my grand-children.
At home I have been heard to accuse my partner of 'doing a Mr Twit' on me if I lose or misplace something. Although he's far too nice to do that...
Rosie Godfrey I was driving at the time, thinking about my grandson who I was on my way to visit. I began making up a song, singing as I went along (as you do), playing with the words, stopping to write them down when I felt I'd got something of worth. I basically had the chorus. Further up the road (I can remember exactly where I was), pictures flooded into my head, like an animated film, with the thought - "This is a picture book!" So I set about writing the story...
