Oliver E. Cadam Some of the happiest days of my life have been spent as a very independent little boy running carefree and unfettered in the English countryside. In those days I used to love to read about Tom Sawyer and his pal Huck Finn, down there on the banks of the mighty Mississippi, building rafts and getting into all sorts of scrapes much like me and my friends on the less daunting but still threatening swirl of the river Lune above Lancaster. To share that Deep South experience with those boys for just a little while would be truly magical - and a little kiss from Miss Becky Thatcher wouldn't be avoided either!
Oliver E. Cadam Naturally I would have to say DCI David Lehrer and his feisty wife Janice, but that's probably becuase I invented them in my second book 'Idle Deceptions' and I have extended their tenure in my soon-to-be-released third novel 'Men on the Hill'!
Otherwise, and with a less self-indulgent mind, I'd suggest Amory Clay & Charbonneau in William Boyd's brilliant 'Sweet Caress'.
Oliver E. Cadam By watching self-obsessed egos bumping into one another in daily life - hilarious and quite sad in so many ways. Add a little imagination and you'll soon have an interesting yarn !
Oliver E. Cadam By observing human nature in the real world. There is a well worn phrase in media circles which says, "you couldn't make it up". While there are many well meaning, kind and good natured people in society, unfortunately there are many many more selfish, unscrupulous and untrustworthy creatures out there, off the leash. You don't need much imagination, and you really don't need to 'make it up', just watch real events and then blend and adapt them into a fictional context. There is nothing as reliable as the unreliability of human nature.
Oliver E. Cadam My second novel, 'Idle Deceptions' - see the brief intro outlined on my website at www.oliverecadam.com
It's a murder mystery based in England, and I'm about half way through it. It should be published at the end of Q1 next year. It would be sooner but I'm taking 6 weeks out up to Xmas for a research trip to Australia, including Tasmania, which is a very exciting prospect. More of that another time.
Oliver E. Cadam I am an aspiring writer. I have so much to learn that I'm in no position to offer advice except perhaps to say that it takes a lot of discipline to finish a book and then to get it published. You have to work long hours when the imagination is running wild, and then stop when you block and start to tire.
Oliver E. Cadam I put some coffee on and do something else entirely
Oliver E. Cadam Independence. I work when I want to or feel the need to, and I let my writing imagination guide me in this respect.
