Timothy Cole I ought to look at this page once in a while.
Yes, I'm on facebook--for a bunch of years, actually.
Timothy Cole Sorry -- I should pay more attention to my page.
Yes, you are right. We are cousins. Edward Payne Cole was my ggg-grandfather. I live directly across the road from where his house used to sit. My land was part of his original farm from 1835.
For my genealogical work-up, can you supply some other names, dates, and particulars -- if it's not too sensitive? from Ida forward?
Timothy Cole Sometimes, I just sit down and write anything that comes into my mind and that breaks the spell. Occasionally, it pervades all attempts to produce anything meaningful, and I have to step aside, dig the garden, go fishing, spend time with the dog--and wait, just wait for it to pass.
Timothy Cole It's almost as satisfying as a good night of sex; it's elevating and educating; it's profitable in other ways than money. And it's a source of pride in yourself.
Timothy Cole Read! Read good authors, classic authors, read some trash (just to know the comparisons). Develop an outstanding vocabulary and describe to yourself, quietly, everything you see, feel, or do. Finally, begin to put all that in words of your own and look for a plot. Join writing groups; listen to their stories, their critiques, their advice, and follow about 10% of all that.
Timothy Cole I was asked some time ago to write a ghost story about the little town that I grew up next to. I'm not a ghost-story writer, nor am I enthralled by fantasy, horror, science fiction, or gremlins; but I had a brainstorm (which I'm not detailing here) and have worked on various chapters with a basic, common idea. It will satisfy my urges for history and paranormal occurrences. If I can concentrate and persevere, I hope to have it ready by 2017.
Timothy Cole All my inspiration occurs just like everyone else's: in the fleeting moments before falling asleep in the dark, next to my slumbering--and easily disturbed--spouse, driving through the countryside, or in the middle of meetings. Naturally, it's fleeting and unrecorded; as a result, most of my inspirations account for little.
What does count is that I sit down with pen and paper or laptop and just start in telling a story. Some people outline an idea, making sketches of characters and identifying plots with prescribed endings. But others of us live in the story, waiting for our characters to join and introduce themselves; the plot unfolds and we wait for the climax and epilog to reveal itself to us. That's me.
Timothy Cole If you mean the Night Light: An Anthology (2014) book, it was a follow-up on our 2013 compilation, Midnight Oil: An Anthology. I am a member of the Blank Slate Writers Group, a bi-monthly, informal group of aspiring authors. As with many such groups, we meet for a couple hours and read our most recent creations. Over the past few years, we found that some really good stuff was produced, nearly all of it unpublished and known only to our small group (10 to 20 people of all ages and persuasions). An experience by one member with self-publishing through the CreateSpace organization, a subsidiary of Amazon, gave us the idea of publishing a book of our best. So we did it! We compiled, we edited, we did the layout, we designed the cover--we did it all! And for a very affordable price without selling our souls (our creations) to copyright doom.
It proved to be very popular and satisfying, and since we were now driven to produce, we decided to do it again--and will probably produce a third anthology. Be on the look-out for it!
In our latest anthology, I am one of sixteen authors; four of my unpublished short stories appear in Night Light....
