When I think about my favorite fictional couple, Weena and the Time Traveller from H. G, Wells' novel, The Time Machine, are the characters that surface above all others in my thoughts. The Time Traveller's name is never revealed, although he is the primary protagonist in the story. This was the first novel I read in one continuous sitting because I couldn't stop wondering what would happen next in the story.
It remains my favorite book and is responsible for my getting hooked on fiction. Weena and The Time Traveller touched my heart in the midst of a fast moving, fascinating and thought provoking plot.

A few years ago, I was daydreaming about what it was like walking through the woods with bright summer sun filtering through the trees. That was probably on a frigid January day in Michigan. I remembered coming across a waterfall by a hiking trail while on a Vermont vacation with my family years earlier. One of my daughters and I jumped into an icy pool of water contained in a bowl carved into stone by the falls. The Field Trip grew around the recollection of that moment. I had a place. I just needed characters to get there, have interesting things happen to them, and then end up somewhere else.

If I can’t work through it in an hour or two, I usually put writing aside to focus on other activities or household projects. But the sticking point never leaves my mind. Possible story lines pop into my head continually regardless of what I am doing until I settle on the “right one” and run with it. For example, in The Field Trip, I wanted more interaction between two of the characters but reached a block on how. Later on the same day a close friend talked about running out of fuel in her vehicle. That sparked an idea that developed into eight pages.

There was a point in my life when I consumed a novel every two days. After reading hundreds of books, I discovered some of the plots were similar. As a diversion, I wondered if I could write a story that was a little different. I did and became hooked on writing fiction. When I read that first manuscript, I groan because it was horrible. But that experience sparked a continuing drive to write.
